Me and my adventures

While the last few weeks of my trip were a bit of a bust, I have pretty much fully recovered from the flu and am quite happy to be back home in my beautiful city where so far, no one seems to not want to be around me based on my swine flu history. I did attempt to make lemons out of lemonade and spent the last few days in Australia in a small beach town about 3 hours North of Sydney called Port Stephens. It was very pretty and I managed to do a few fun activities while I was there. I rented a bike and rode from one end of town the next (on the left side!). I went whale watching and didn't see one stinkin' whale. I ate lamingtons, drank tea, and did ... read more

This is where things start to get weird. I've been staying at this YHA hostel in Bondi Beach. Bondi is a little bit like Tiburon meets Cancun meets Rodeo Drive: beautiful beaches with crystal clear water in the bluest of blue shades. Lots of snotty little kids running around whining about how they want a lolly and lots of yappy little dogs in their designer yappy dog outfits to keep them warm (because it IS winter here after all). I've been keeping a pretty low profile at the hostel, and while some of the faces were beginning to become familiar, I certainly hadn't made any friends. Pretty much everyone is 22 and fabulous and just came from The Club or just about to go to The Club or very busy talking about what happened last night ... read more

It feels strange to use the blog to convey bad news, but unfortunately, I am not having the best experience in Australia. I have come down with the dreaded swine flu and have been in bed (actually "bed" is a euphamism for Tim's thermarest) since Monday and finally went to the doctor today. Confirmed swine. With lots of time on my hands and my brain full of evil thoughts as to who exactly should be to blame for all of this, I now have a well-polished theory. The country of Australia is to blame. Having just traveled through all of the "high alert" countries in SE Asia, the people and the governments there are doing everything they possibly can to prevent the spread. There are body heat sensors at all international airports, the majority of the ... read more

The last few days have been very mellow, just hanging out in Palm Beach with my Aunt & Uncle. Reading, eating, sleeping, talking, walking, playing with golden retriever named Einstein. It's winter here and for as much as I complained about the heat in Vietnam, I actually kind of miss it. I have to wear CLOTHES here and, well, I worked really hard on my tan...now it's just fading. Devasting, really. But all is not lost. I've extended my trip by one week and will be heading up to Cairns on Aug 29 to do a live-aboard dive boat. That will be 3 days, and then I'll have a few extra days of beach lounging to ensure my brain has turned to complete mush before I head home to begin my job search. I'll be leaving ... read more

There are moments in life, especially when traveling, when the kindness of others, sometimes even strangers, is so touching and so heartwarming, it leaves you feeling humble and very grateful. There are so many moments throughout this trip that I thought: I might just have to compile a list....and that is exactly what I have done. -The friendly Cambodian guy on the flight from Bangkok to Phnom Penh who went through my entire Lonely Planet Cambodia and starred the places and activities that he thought were worthwhile. -Gordon at Two Dragons for loving to talk and having the most accurate opinions ever. -The four Americans at Two Dragons who let us use their laptop because we were terrified of the keystroking software at the local internet cafe. -Jenni for becoming our third wheel. -Matahari dive shop ... read more

Note: With time and internet access in Sydney, I've re-written this because my hurried first draft really didn't sufficiently describe the experience: With a fixed amount of time in Vietnam, the one thing I really wanted to do was to visit Halong Bay, a chain of islands on the Northeastern Coast. They are not really islands, but moreso massive rocks with dense jungle jutting out from the water. There are so many of them, from a distance, they look like a mountain range. Up close, each one has it's own little unique features. Some have caves, some have Buddhist shrines, some have monkeys, some have un-touched beaches. I spent a fair amount of time in Hanoi trying to find the right company to do the trip with; since I'd be stuck with the group for three ... read more

I spent most of my first day in Hanoi dealing with a flight glitch. And by "glitch", I mean that Vietnam Air never booked my flight to Australia. A very kind and generous woman at the hotel was helping me get to the bottom of what happened, but she was only able to do so much by phone (which is baffling to me). She put me in taxi and sent me over to the Vietnam Airlines office. $6 later (which is a lot for a taxi here), the taxi drops me off at what appears to be the Vietnam Airlines corporate office. It is sort of like going to Bentonville Arkansas Wal-Mart office and expecting to buy housewares. I attempt to walk through the gate and I don't make it far. Security comes chasing after me ... read more

It's a bit of a harsh transition to go from the tranquil beauty of Malaysia to the bustling grime and vibrance of Hanoi but I'm here and I'm making every effort to get a whiff (so to speak, but also viscerally) of what Hanoi is all about. Or as much as I can figure out in the two days that I'll be here. So far, the thing that has made me the happiest since I arrived in Hanoi is that the hotel has laundry services. REAL laundry, with a washer and dryer and same-day service: the works. My clothes are, how do you say, disgusting. They are all in various states of dampness and all have been worn during periods of prolific sweating, creating a lovely potpourrie of aromatic stench. I had to open my backpack ... read more

The first thing you must know is that I am now an Advanced Certified PADI diver. So can I get a little respect please? :) Now that we have that out of the way, a short update from the beautiful island of Kecil in lovely Malaysia. As you can see, I am quite fond of this place. The water is absolutely crystal clear, the diving is phenomenal, by far, the best saltwater diving I've ever done. I have spent lots of time in the sea which makes me happy. When not amongst the fishies, you can generally find me lounging at the beach or drinking a mango icee. This has been one of those weeks that words can't really describe. Just very nice and relaxing and calm. Kecil is a funny little island. It's beautiful, yes ... read more

We woke up at 5am to head to the ferry for Pulau Kecil, we wanted to be on the first one to optimize our chances of finding a decent room. The taxi picked us up in a beat up old Mercedes and as we headed out of town, he made a quick pitstop at the gas station to fill up (this is the second time on this trip that a taxi has stopped for gas after they've picked me up. Can you imagine this happening in San Francisco?) and I realized that I still needed to buy a roll of toilet paper...the just in case kind. I walked up to the window, and asked the shop guy if I could buy some toilet paper. He didn't understand, so the taxi driver offered a translation to him. ... read more
