Camping in the North East So we set off with the Range Rover fully loaded after having a couple of days looking after Scuzzie the springer spaniel. So after dropping off Scuzzie we are off and no I am not singing “we’re off, we’re off, we’re off in a motor car, 360 miles to go and we don’t know where we are”. However keep that song in mind you never know as I decide that the SAT NAV is not required the girl guide in me will take over so map in hand and here I go. It is the Yorkshire Show so I am trying to avoid Harrogate like the plague which is a bit difficult as it is on the way. However, the dib, dib, dib in me (girl guide - talk, just in ... read more

So we had another day in Tokyo just going around looking at amazing things. Yesterday we went to Matsushima. Matsushima was hit hard in 2011 by the earthquake and tsunami. The town is now nearly back to what it was prior to the tsunami. We had to get there by the bullet train via Tokyo to Sendai and then a local train to Matsushima - so we can honestly now say that after over 2 weeks in Japan we are train aficionados .Anything you need to know about Japanese trains please tweet/email me and I will be able to answer your questions, ha ha. We decide that we are going to take a boat ride around the harbour of Matsushima to see the 100 islands - it is not a good day from the weather perspective ... read more

So we were up quite early this morning to catch the train from Kyoto back to Tokyo. British Rail needs to look at the Japanese train system as I know it could learn a lot from it. The train was brilliant once again and gave me time to finish the book I have been reading called Still Alice by the author Lisa Genova. If you only read one book a year, this is the book for you, it is one of the stories that you want to stand up and tell a train full of strangers YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK. Ok so rant and rave over now and on with the blog. We arrive in Tokyo and find the hotel really easily - see we are turning Japanese (I told you so in an ... read more

Well we had an early start today to get to the Imperial Palace for the tour we booked yesterday. Now what can I say about the tour it was ok but to be honest nothing to write home about. We just toured the outside of the palace and did not take one step inside which was a bit of a shame to be honest. The sun was beating down on us and it was not much fun to be honest - good thing I brought an umbrella which keeps the sun and rain off you, as I really needed it. the only great bit was I could see one painting inside but I had to stand on one leg and balance over a rope which I am sure would have had electricity going through it as ... read more

So wake up after a nightmare thinking about being on an escalator YES nightmare I told you I am now getting scared of suitcases and escalators whenever I see a suitcase and an escalator I start to tremble. Who would have thought me being scared would be an option but hey ho I think I need a shrink. So we go to the information desk that the ladies think Mike is Mr Bean and we ask how we get to the bus station and they tell us it is 5 minutes away over the bridge and down an ESCALATOR. So 5 minutes against our 1 1/2 hours plus a taxi yesterday trying to get to the same place now I feel like a bimbo. How could I have not got that yesterday I do not know ... read more

Well on the train to Nagoya and once again a smooth transition the only problem is my suitcase handle has slightly buckled when I fell on the escalator and twisted the handle but not only that have a major bruise on my bum. How can you fall going on an uphill escalator and land on your bum with your suitcase higher than you? I do not know but all I can say is I now have a fear of escalators with a suitcase, ha ha ( the full story is to come) So we arrive at Kyoto train station and Mike goes off to find out where our hotel is and off he pops to the Tourist Information desk while I hold the suitcases (with one handle a little bit out of shape!). So he comes ... read more

Asia » Japan » Ishikawa » Kanazawa June 14th 2015

So an early breakfast and off to the train we go to have a day in Kanazawa. It seems we are really lucky as the train station only opened in March this year, previously you had to take a bus for over an hour after you had been on the train for a couple of hours. Thank goodness for progress. So we arrive in Kanazawa and find the information desk where for once we find a lady who spoke really good English and she told me how to get to the garden and the castle plus the Samurai area. We purchase a bus ticket and off we trot to the Kenrokuen Garden. They say that this garden in spring is amazing all I can say is they are amazing in summer so I wish I could ... read more

So we decide that we are going on a day trip to Matsumoto Castle off on the train we get and arrive in Matsumoto. Quickly we find our way to the castle. Matsumoto Castle is one of the oldest five story tenshu in Japan. It was amazing going around the castle and climbing the stairs to each of the floors. I am not a very tall person and the Japanese are smaller than me so why do they build staircases with stairs so far away from each other I have no idea - there must be a reason but it beats me! The gardens were also amazing with so many fabulous flowers and plants. As I was looking out the window of the castle there was a Geisha girl walking and the vision looked so Japanese ... read more

So we get the train to Nagano and I am really looking forward to it as it is in the mountains as it used to be where the winter olympics took place in 1998. Now should I have thought the last time I went to somewhere that had the winter olympics (Whistler) I was so disappointed as it seemed really manufactured YES. Did I NO. Should I have YES. Well we arrived at Nagano station and yes it looked as manufactured as Whistler and was I disappointed YES as I had just left a great place in Tokyo for this. Anyway you have to make the most of everything and that is what I did there was a Zenkoji Temple which was only around 2km from the hotel so I said off we go lets have ... read more

Well we have decided that we would like to see Tokyo by water as we normally try to do this when we get to a city and last time we were here we did not even think about it. So looking at all the literature we decided to do the Tokyo Cruise - so off we go on the train (we are real commuters now you know) and get to the Asakusa boat station to be told we cannot get a boat until around 1.15. That meant we had to use up a few hours so we decided we would go and get something to eat. We found the market at Asakusa and recognised that we had been here before - it is a bit touristy well a lot when you see rickshaws lining up to ... read more
