cheap bastard I don't know what the exchange rate is, but after receiving 400 euros (@ 100/hr) for doing nothing at the airport, you still want to scam the system to save 48 egyptian pounds? Tourists like you make me sick! ahahhaah...if you look like a local Egyptian, then I am Elvis.
I never knew Sphinx's bum was so massive, and that people can 'ride' on it! Definitely a eye opener...
you've been preparing for this since you were 5??? Tom - sorry to get stuck on the details, but where exactly did you get a 1983 guidebook to the Egyptian museum?
How Many Sons? I assume you're getting used to this question? By the time we left Egypt, Ben and I were such pros that he'd say 'none yet, but 5 by the time we come back next!' - this would lead to some serious hand shaking and back slapping.
Cheap bastard Tom, as an Ambassador of Australia could you please stop breaking local laws and regulations in your attempt to cheap out of the admission fees. Am I going to hear about your detention somewhere in West Africa only to discover you're only being held because you refuse to tip the hotel doorman?
I am a donut Tom, it have been very good to see you in Berlin and to show you a bit of Berlin's spirit and history. There is much more to see and tell. Hope you can make it again soon and we have more time to spend. Try to make it in summer , Berlin is much more alive and crazy then. All the best for Africa and keep me updated about the kilimandscharo. Dirk
Cashing in on the wall Gilles and I are doing an continuing learning course on Archaeology and the Berlin Wall souvenirs are the new fake Mummies that came out of Egypt in the 1920’s. It seems that everyone has broken up parts of the concrete driveway spared a few colours on it a sold them of as Berlin Wall souvenirs.
Travelling companion I thought you would of found a fellow travelling historian in the hostels by now. Maybe the Pakistani Cricket Captain look is putting them off. Don't worry I am sure you will find a travelling budy in Africa. It is often safer to travel in pairs. Have fun I, living vicariously.
Hope for Political systems Hi Tom,
Great dialogue, it's made me think about how we can all be affected by by the most populated country in teh world. As you have porbaly heard a win for social values occurred with Labor's return to the State Government.
Curry and chips - i love this country! i swear i get distracted for ten minutes, next thing you've travelled across 2 continents and trying to get Germans to laugh at your nazi jokes. Might be too soon (although there is a southpark episode at a fancydress party in hell, steve irwin is there with a stingray barb in his chest). Sounds like you stumbled onto a good thing in Prague, can you tell me where you stayed? Am heading that way in easter. And sounds like you had a ball in Birmingham... is that same cousin Carl who came to Darwin? love that pubs are so lax here (every man and his dog has new meaning up here, can you imagine if Darwin pubs let people bring in their dogs?) and you can get chips with every meal. Sorry, read your blogs in reverse!
Little Green Man I loved the little East German traffic light man. We went on a four hour walking tour when we were there and our guide told us that they tried to phase him out after reunification. There was a massive backlash from Easties unhappy with the loss of their icon, groups were formed and word on the street is that the traffic light man from the East is now replacing that of the West.
love the blog Tom,
yours is the first blog of my life and I am enjoying the tour. Prague is one of the places that I have missed but is now firmly on my list of must do things.
I do hope you enjoy Egypt. I found it fascinating and have just found a book I purchased in Cairo in 1989 written by Florence Nightingale about her travels in Egypt, a place where things hardly change. I once thought it would be fun to live in Aswan for a couple of months each year and use it as a base to explore all the wonderful sights the country has to offer. The whole thing takes my breath away. Gerry
Self portrait Tom look at all that one handed fun you are having. Here's hoping it continues in Afrika where you are bound to love the poultry offerings. P.s Have commenced teaching marketing through James Bond, though not sure if he ever made to the African shores, you might come up with a few storylines.
Stayin' Alive Brett, you know that i don't have anything as cool as those songs on my iPod. That's why I'm loving Prague so much: during lunch, they played phil Collins AND Europe on the stereo. Now that's music!
Bee Gees groover at the MDC? Hey Tom
I thought your moves fvrom our Bee Gees number might have come in handy on the dance floor at the MDC but alas you were obviously beaten by a better man on the night! He must have been some dancer. Are you sure they did not use your iPod for the tracks they played on the night???
Aston Villa FC not our tribe Tom
For Bernie's benefit, Villa Park is the enemy territory as far as both your ancestries are concerned. We are true Blues (Birmingham City FC) supporters even if they are completely crap. Blood is thicker than water.
Wot no Birmingham FC? Hi Tom, no time for a Birmingham game in all this cultural reconnection, and you a lad from Westfields Sports High!! Thought you'd be sending the school snaps of St Andrews and Villa Park.
Looking forward to the globalisation kid meets darkest Africa (and the holidays!)
Cheers mate,
Bernie
Hi Hi Tom,
Susan has just sent me your contact details. Such an exciting trip and I do hope you enjoy Egypt and Morocco as much as I did on my various journeys to north Africa. Keep in touch. as ever, Gerry
photographic skills Ouga, how's about a few more photos of you in action- amongst the punters in China, facing down the guards, meeting cute young China girls and boys. The scenic photos are great, but not that amusing.
Travel happens when I can fit it in, nowadays, but it will always be my favourite hobby. Here's my list of the best bits so far, in thirteen years of hopping around the world:
Asia Angkor Wat (Cambodia) Taj Mahal and Varanasi (India) Annapurna Range and Kathmandu (Nepal) Bagan (Burma) Koh Phiphi (Thailand) Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors and the Forbidden City (China) Peshawar and the Chitral-Gilgit road (Pakistan) Istanbul and Butterfly Valley (Turkey) Luang Prabang (Laos)
Americas Teotihuacan and Mexico City (Mexico) Lake Atitlan and Tikal (Guatem... full info
