Oh the Places We Go

Jill and Bryan

Welcome! We are excited to share our travels with you.

Today was our last day in the Caribbean, so we had to cram in all the things we wanted to do, but had not yet. That included sleeping in! So, we got a late start, leaving our hotel around 10:30. We decided to spend the morning snorkeling at 3 different sites. We went up to Cemetery Beach first. There is a reef about 20 yards off the beach. It was teeming with all kinds of fish! We had read that people bring food for the fish, so when they saw us, they swarmed (assuming we had food). At first, it was kind of scary and gross! Huge fish were inches away, a few even touched me. Ugh! Then, after you got used to it, it was neat to see fish that up close. At one point, ... read more

Happy Thanksgiving! We began the day early again, so Bryan could go on his last 2 dives. I finished up the packing and read for awhile before I checked out of the Sunshine Suites. Luckily, the Ritz was within walking distance, so around 11:30, I walked over and checked into our room. The Ritz Carlton is huge and luxurious! When you check in, not only do they give you a map of the property, they have someone escort you to your room! Bryan met me in the lobby, happy from his dives. He classified his last dive to Trinity Caves as "excellent!" After he checked out the room, we had to turn around and leave again for our afternoon activities. We walked over to the Sunshine Suites and got our car and luggage. Then, went to ... read more

Today, we were up early again. Bryan got ready for his second day of diving. Today, he was going to the much more calm West Wall, instead of the choppy waters of the North Wall, so he was happy about that. While he was out exploring the ocean, I headed back to the beach for a few hours. I grabbed a somewhat shady spot, set my chair down and relaxed. When Bryan returned from diving, we got cleaned up and drove to the West Bay area. We ate lunch at the Caylpso Grill, which I had read tons of fabulous recommendations about (especially their sticky toffee pudding dessert). I ordered the fish and chips, Bryan got a bacon and brie sandwich. I have to say, I was not impressed with my meal. A disappointment after the ... read more

Today was a very relaxing day. We got up early and ate breakfast. Then, we went our separate ways: Bryan went diving for the first time in the Cayman Islands and I hung out at the beach. The sun was hot and the water was chilly, but a beautiful shade of turquoise! I soaked it all up, while reading magazines. It was great! Bryan got back from his dive in time for lunch. So, we went to a local pizzeria called Ragazzi. We ordered a pizza to split--rosemary chicken, potatoes, onions and sweet peppers. It sounds kinda gross, but it was actually delicious! The fresh baked bread was also fantastic. After lunch, we visited the Tortuga Rum Cake Factory!!! The factory had a window where you could look into the bakery and see them make the ... read more

We woke up refreshed this morning about 7:30 AM (which is really sleeping in compared to most of our vacations). We took advantage of our free continental breakfast :) and got ready for the day. Around 10, we arrived in George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands. It is also where the cruise ship port is located. Today, there were only 2 ships (6,000 people) in port. We spent most of the day just walking around and doing my favorite vacation activity, shopping for souvenirs! It was quite interesting to see all the Christmas decorations already up around town. Stores were even playing reggae versions of Christmas carols. :) The main thing the Cayman Islands is known for is their Tortuga rum (even though it is actually distilled in Jamaica). There is, however, a Tortuga ... read more

Our first day on Grand Cayman: Our trip began when we left home at 10:30 PM on Nov. 21. We had to connect through Charlotte, NC. So, we got to Charlotte at 6 AM and left for Grand Cayman at 9:45 AM. After some very long flights, we finally arrived here around 1 PM. All the traveling was worth it, though. It is beautiful here! We rented a tiny little car for our week on the island. They drive on the opposite side of the road here, so Bryan had fun learning to drive on the left. (We did spend a considerable amount of time driving with our wipers on, instead of the turn signal! :) However, he is now a pro. We drove to our hotel, the Sunshine Suites, excited to be able to freshen ... read more

We were back in Quito for our last day in South America. Again, we got up early and were on the bus by 8 AM. Our tour today included a two hour drive through the Ecuadorian countryside to Otavalo and then on to Cotacachi. Our main stop on the way to Otavalo was the Equator! Basically, there is a tourist attraction called La Mitad del Mundo (the middle of the world) that is a large, orange monument marking the Equator. The marker sits on a large stone design. Together, the monument and the stones create a large sundial, used to mark the solstices and equinox. After a brief presentation about how this spot on the Equator was found by the Inca, we had time to take pictures. It was pretty cool to be standing in both ... read more

The Galapagos Islands are located about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. They are the home to many unique and exotic animals. We could not wait to explore the different islands of the Galapagos! SAN CRISTOBAL ISLAND We arrived at the airport in San Cristobal late in the morning. After collecting our things, we had to take a small zodiac boat to get to our cruise ship, the Galapagos Explorer II. We arrived on the ship in the afternoon and right away checked into our room (with a balcony!). We changed into our swimsuits, ready for our first sightseeing adventure! The first stop we made was on San Cristobal Island, at a place called Wizard Hill. As we arrived in the zodiac boats, we were awe struck by ... read more

Day One: We arrived at the airport in Cusco, Peru at 8 AM (2 hours before our flight). We had to travel back to Lima, then we would go on to Quito, Ecuador. Let's just say our trip to Quito was a bit stressful! --Our flight to Lima was canceled. So, all 33 of us in our group had to take an earlier flight that left at 8:35 AM, which we were not booked on. --7 of us (Bryan and I included) were not issued boarding passes initially for our new flight. That left us wondering if we were in fact going to make it to Quito! --When we finally got boarding passes, after the flight was supposed to have left (they held the plane, thankfully!), we did not have assigned seats. This wound up working ... read more

After our trip to Machu Picchu, we had one full day left in Cusco before heading to Ecuador. We woke up around 6 AM for a full day tour of the cities surrounding Cusco. We hopped on the bus and drove up and up into the hills around the city. The views of Cusco below, the snow capped mountains in the distance and the patchwork of green, yellow and brown farms were too beautiful to describe--even the camera could not quite capture the magic of the natural surroundings. It was also neat to see all the animals in the fields--pigs, cows, bulls, donkeys, and a few llamas. After driving for about an hour and a half, we arrived at our first place, the city of Chinchero (elevation = 12,500 ft!). Here we visited a family who ... read more
