South America » Falkland Islands February 4th 2011

Due to weather conditions, we went to the main island of the Falklands yesterday and won't be visiting the west island at all. I had been looking forward to that because it supposedly had lots of penguins roaming around that you could just walk amongst. Oh, well. Now we will be in Ushuaia a day earlier and rounding Cape Horn before a big storm arrives. Did you realize there were fewer than 2000 people living in the Falklands when the war happened? (in 1982) About the same number of soldiers were killed. Seems an idiotic waste of lives and money. There are still minefields all over the place, but they are fenced off with skull and crossbones signs. Port Stanley, on the main island, reminded me a lot of Nisswa. Teeming with gift shops, but with ... read more

South America » Argentina » Chubut » Puerto Madryn February 1st 2011

An unexpectedly exciting day! We were in Puerto Madryn, Argentina, which is a 50,000 pop. relatively new resort area about halfway down the coast. We berthed at the end of their very long pier, on the leeward side, so the wind wouldn't blow us against it. Hugh and I walked into town, watched the school kids having their gym classes on the beach, bought a new cheap wristwatch for me (since the humidity of Rio was too much for my old one), and had a treat from the local bakery. We really enjoyed the town because it was not very busy, was full of "locals," and most of all because it was just the right temperature! When we had seen it all, we walked back to the ship, noticing that the wind had really picked up. ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 30th 2011

Boy, have we been busy! It is great to have a day at sea to recover. First, a day in Montevideo, Uruguay. The ship was docked very close to the center of the old part of town, so we took the shuttle bus in, then strolled back. It's a beautiful place with lots of old European architecture. In fact, since it is a very flat area, the stone and other building materials were brought over from (mostly) Scotland! The next morning we docked in Buenos Aires where we were transported by bus to the airport for our 1 1/2 hour flight to Iguazu to see the waterfalls there. There are 275 different waterfalls making Niagara look like peanuts in comparison! First we went to the Brazillian side where most of the view is from below; the ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro January 25th 2011

Rio was very, very hot, but lots of fun. As we sailed in early in the morning, it was hard to believe we were actually seeing Sugar Loaf and Corcovado Mountains, for real! The "Christ the Redeemer" statue was slightly obscured by clouds, but we could see it was there. We had the premier berth in port, being much closer to the terminal than the three huge ships that were there, too. We took a bus tour which took us to the station for the 20 minute funicular ride up Corcovado. On the way up we passed some very weird looking trees that had huge fruit growing not from their branches, but from the their trunks. We found out they are called "Jack Fruit" -- at least that is what it sounded like and will, I'm ... read more

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador January 21st 2011

When we returned to our cabin after lunch yesterday, there was an ornate invitation waiting for us, inviting us to cocktails and dinner with the Captain. We can only imagine that we were asked because of our Black Watch romance! So we got all gussied up -- it was formal night -- and even took the lift for the first time this trip so that we would arrive at the Observatory Lounge without breaking a sweat. There were only eight guests: three Norwegians, an English couple, a woman who was born in Edinburgh, and us. The captain and the customer relations manager rounded out the table. Before we sat down, a group photo was taken which was presented to us during dessert. It was all so elegant, I felt like Cinderella at the ball! There were ... read more

The "Boogie" Ride The guide on our coach in Fortaleza admitted right off that he had never been to an English speaking country, so his grammar and pronunciation were very interesting. We had no trouble understanding what he said, but it took some mental acrobatics to understand what he meant. When he held up four fingers and told us he had two brothers, for example. And every time he mentioned the dune buggies, he said "boogie" which certainly brought up a different visual image! I suppose I won't get much sympathy telling you how hot it was in Fortaleza. But it was. Hot and humid. The guide said the average temperature varied by only four degrees between summer and winter. It was obvious they were used to the heat and used to walking around in skimpy ... read more

We received an interesting bit of news from the captain today. We will not be going to Recife, Brazil, because their immigration officials are suddenly demanding a $500 fee for each Filipino crew member aboard! Apparently it is just this particular state of Brazil that has come up with this corrupt policy, so we will go to Fortaleza, a port in the neighboring state, instead. According to our captain, Fortaleza is a nicer place anyway, with prettier beaches. Last night the cruise director interviewed our captain, Terje Ulset. He is about 43 years old, 6' 5", with red hair...and is hilarious! He followed a very rocky path to becoming a captain, including driving a truck in Norway for two years, and getting laid off -- twice -- as a deck hand when Norwegian crews were replaced ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Madeira » Funchal January 9th 2011

First port of call today: Funchal, Madeira, a beautiful island off the northwest coast of Africa. We had a wonderful day, filled with sunshine and exercise. The ship's shuttle bus dropped us in the middle of the city where we jumped on a red hop-on, hop-off double-decker tour bus that wound around the sights of Funchal. Hugh has been here many times before, so he was eager to point out his favorite places. We then took the cable car up to Monte where we found a restaurant and had cheese sandwiches on yummy local bread. After visiting the church where the last Emperor of Austria is buried, we came down via the cable car and walked through the city. Since it was Sunday, almost everything was closed -- including the shop with free Madeira wine-tasting -- ... read more

North America » United States » Minnesota » Nisswa November 30th 2010

Our adventure begins January 3rd when we fly from the Twin Cities to London-Heathrow. December will be a flurry of activity as we get ready to go. It should be easier this time around since I don't have the store to close down, just our home. And I'll have Hugh to help! We just can't wait to be back "home" on the Black Watch, the ship we met on two years ago. We hope many of the same crew will still be aboard, maybe even some of the same passengers. I've put the map together ahead of time so you will know our whole route in advance. Thanks for reading this and joining us as we set sail for South America!... read more

We did it! All the way around the world and then some. And we got home happy and well. The shipped was docked in Southampton when we woke up Monday morning. We ate a quick breakfast and then were among the first passengers allowed to go ashore. The Captain stood at the gangway shaking hands and saying goodbye. A very nice touch that was typical of our wonderful ship. We were able to quickly gather our suitcases and get our "private car" to come pick us up. We happily ran into Hugh in the pick-up area after we had already said our goodbyes on the ship, so he was able to help pack us into the car and see us on our way. The trip up to Heathrow Airport was uneventful. It was a beautiful spring ... read more
