I would have never thought a 2.5 hour plane ride in West Africa could bring such a different culture, feeling, and atmosphere. Wow, Ghana. Kristin and I decided to take a week’s vacation in August. We did a bit of research and it seemed Ghana was our best option; not a long plane ride, temperatures were cooler (and man, do I appreciate cooler temperatures now), beach, history, rainforest, and the big bonus it’s English speaking. Kristin’s mother, Janice, came to Senegal for a visit and to join us on our trip to Ghana. Of course we had nothing planned until the day before when I located a man based in the UK that puts together custom tours. He organized us a car and driver and a mix of hotels and home stays along our chosen route. ... read more

Okay so I am the worst “blogger” ever. I am bad at keeping up and depend completely on my co-workers to update their blogs. I will try to keep this short but I wanted to write about my trips to the villages around Senegal and write a bit about Plan. A few months back the girls and I had the opportunity to go to Theis, which is a town about an hour away where Plan Senegal has a few different community projects. We work in the main country office in Dakar working with corporate finance and do not get to see Plan’s programs in action on a day to day basis....so we were all very much looking forward to our day in the field. After meeting with some people in the office, we went to our ... read more

My last two blogs were about Dakar, and although I spend most of my time here we have made a few trips outside of the city limits. And like everything else they are always an experience. St. Louis About 1 month ago we took a weekend trip to the town of St. Louis in northern Senegal. Saint Louis is about 4.5 hours north of Dakar, on the coast very close to the border of Mauritania. Although it is still in the ‘Savannah’ zone, like all of Senegal, it is close to the Sahara which brings much more of a desert feel to the area. In case I have not already made clear…any form of travel here in West Africa is not easy. Getting to Saint Louis was an adventure in itself. The journey and humor begins ... read more

Getting Settled

I am finally ‘settled’ here in Dakar. Kristin and I are fully moved into our new house and trying our best to adjust to our new way of life. On the outside, things are not all that different from home. We wake up, walk to work, spend 8+ hours in front of a computer, then go home. However for some reason almost every aspect of the day is quite a chore for us. Ok, maybe waking up is not all that difficult (except for the fact that I hate mornings). Our bedrooms have these shutters on them that are always closed, which is probably good because it keeps more of the mosquitos out, but bad because it stops any sun from shining in and therefore makes getting up that much harder. I feel like I am ... read more

I have finally stepped into the new age of mass communication and I am starting a blog. I have been gone 3.5 months and have yet to send any mails out explain where I am or really what I am doing. There is a lot to catch up on which is a daunting task, hence my overall avoidance. Through the encouragement of my co-worker/roommate Kristen I finally decided to sit down and at least catch everybody up on my time here in Senegal. So here I am in Dakar, which is the capital of Senegal for those who don’t know. I added a map below so everybody can visualize where in Africa I am….(sorry if this offends anybody…I was just trying to help). You can also click in the bottom right corner of this page to ... read more
