So we opted for the deluxe sleeper option on the train over to Hong Kong, being a little wary of how ‘deluxe’ it would actually be. We were sharing a rather cramped but comfortable enough room with 2 Chinese gentleman. If you’ve ever seen that episode of ‘An Idiot Abroad’ recently where Carl describes his bed as sleeping on a shelf, that is pretty accurate. In our room the bunks were just the standard 2 high, but in hard sleeper they are 3 or even 4, without any steps up so some good upper arm strength is required if you opt for one of those beds! Our train journey over, we then had the problem of getting into central Hong Kong. For this we relied on the kindness of strangers, which fortunately was in our favour. ... read more

Ok so I’m still really behind with posting these but I will endeavour to get more on top of things soon! But now casting my mind back to Guilin... Our time in Guilin was very fleeting, having flown from Chengdu in order to avoid the 26 hour train journey (the flight was only 1.5 hours so god knows where the train goes?!) We stayed in the lovely ‘How Flowers’ hostel, chilled out for a day or two and decided to postpone our travel arrangements to Hong Kong for 3 days in order to visit the nearby UNESCO heritage site of Yangshuo. As we had flown to the previous 3 places and were living far too much of a jet-set lifestyle for travellers, we decided this time to go by…bamboo raft! This took us about 4 hours ... read more

Chengdu We added Chengdu into our trip as it seemed like a pleasant stop off on the way and had heard of a panda conservation and breeding centre there. I was expecting Chengdu to be similar to Xi’an but it is a lot bigger and more modernised, the street of designer stores however did seem a bit out of place; you could have been mistaken to thinking you were in Paris or Milan. We did however stick to panda spotting as opposed to window shopping. Have to say the pandas were adorable and it is a privilege to be able to see such a rare creature in real life and at such close proximity. They do live in very good conditions; however it is essentially a zoo, they don’t re-habilitate them into the wild or anything ... read more

Xi’an So we tried to catch an overnight train to Xi’an not really bearing in mind that with over 1.3bn people, China has over a 7th of the world’s population and that means a good few people want the same train as you. So instead we paid a little extra and flew. The city of Xi’an, was for me anyway, more of a culture shock than Beijing. It is not a major city and therefore is not so clean or modern and we definitely did not feel as safe there. The only reason this town has become a tourist destination is due to the discovery of the terracotta army quite recently in 1974 by a local farmer whilst he was digging a well. That is one lucky guy, he now a millionaire spends his days doing ... read more

So I have been saying for a while now that I would keep a travel blog, a reminder of the amazing and stupid things that happen along the way and as a way of keeping in touch with those interested. Facebook access in China is pretty much non-existant so I’m going to have to go back in time a little for my first few entries. Here goes… Beijing A couple of weeks back now on the 15th Oct myself and Aimee set off for bustling Beijing. We got off to a brilliant start with me packing until 4am the night before (pretty standard) and Aimee forgetting her passport on the way to the airport. Once on board we could relax for the 18 hour flight on the biggest plane I’ve ever seen, how exactly can something ... read more
