Travels with my daughter!!!!

A toddler should see a bit of the world and see how lucky she is! And although she no longer is a toddler, there is still so much world to discover and adventures to be had! And a mother who really needs to catch up on those blogs!!!

Well after a hectic few weeks, my birthday appeared out of nowhere which seemed a bit scary, yet another birthday!!! The first half of the day was spent doing things like buying train tickets to Gatwick Airport (positive moves towards my great weekend ahead) and having every oddball come up to me and tell me all about their problems, their missed anniversaries and lost loved ones. They were all rather sad stories, so felt obliged to listen. I hope I helped a bit but in any case, good to know my oddball magnet was still alive and well! Making me look forward all the more to the weekend! The rest of the day was spent working, kids going a wee bit mad! Was it a full moon as well as my birthday, must check!!! My 5 year old daughter Luna and I spent a month in Uganda. We had the most wonderful experience, I’d like to share a few of these experiences with you: 1 Luna was delighted with our first days, as while I washed clothes outside in a bath tub, she found a three legged cat and a pig sleeping outside our room. A few monkeys on the roof and a goat which had been bought for a wedding but as it had too much personality everyone wanted the goat to stay alive. 2 We took a matatu (shared taxi) through tea plantations and papyrus to arrive in a town called Jinja where we then walked to the Nile in order to take a boat to its source where on an island we saw a monitor lizard. On ... read more

Last year, before my daughter would have to start school, we decided to go travelling around the world. Although hard at times, travelling alone with a three year old, it was an absolutely amazing experience! We set off for India where my daughter's godfather was getting married. It was a huge Hindu wedding and my daughter got to ride with the groom on a beautiful grey arab, just like a little princess. After the wedding and all the attention she had been given, travelling, just the two of us was a bit of a shock for her and we had a few wobbly days. This soon settled as we went up to the north of India to discover where my grandfather was born. After India, we set off for the jungles of Borneo, so beautiful. I ... read more

The day after the wedding everyone left quite early and it felt very empty! Susie got to make a speach in a school but you shall have to ask her for details! Anyhow 7 of us got into a car back to Dehli! I had auntie Susie on my lap for the whole way which when we got a wee bit lost my leg wasn't feeling so happy! But such is life! Back in Dehli we slowly said goodbye to the last few guests (ie Emily and Reggie, groom's parents and Maggie their friend!) and we jumped into a cab to our hotel. A new adventure was to begin! We had the next day in Dehli but with our faffing skills (which Ralf can vouch for how good we were at faffing then and still haven't ... read more

Well, we've now been here ten days and I can say it's been an intense ten days in the best possible way. The flight went well and I caught up on some film watching while Luna and Susie slept. At the end of the second film I saw that it was light outside thought I'd take a peak and was rewarded by the most amazing view. Turkmenistan (I found out later) and it is really beautiful. Hopefully I'll work out how to put a photo on this computer! We did have one comotion on the plane, a call for a doctor or nurse, luckily a dashing Indian doctor came forward, I wondered if I could feign illness to be treated! So we didn't have to do an emergency landing in Afghanistan which was probably a good ... read more

Well, it's under a week now! And I still have an absurd number of things to do and an uncooperative toddler! Still I'd better get used to that as it'll be just the two of us for 73 days! In some ways, I just want to be on that first plane thus what's not been done will be too late. Still, finally the bathroom is 98% finished, just in time for us to leave and not have time to appreciate it! Had dinner with a lovely Kiwi family who helped me focus on a plan for the limited time we have in New Zealand and far too many beautiful things to see. I think we're fairly ready for our adventure, have bought Luna a journal for her to scribble in, well got her to choose a ... read more

Well hello! I have no idea how to go about doing a travel blog but hopefully by the time I get back I will be a pro! Thankfully, I'm much more proficient in the travelling department. Secretly I have a great nostalgia for the old "Poste restante" and am glad that the first time I took to the road, things such as internet, mobile phones and the likes didn't exist. And in many ways, waiting till you got to a major city so that you could collect some post some nice friends but usually your mother had sent. A letter you could hold in your hand and reread and smell the paper that had made it's way to you, all the way from home! I remember going to the main post office in Bombay (it was ... read more
