My husband turns 60 this year and our youngest son graduates from high school. What perfect occasions to finally plan our trip to Kenya and Tanzania. A life long dream of my husband Pat's. In order to get our sons to join us we agreed to bring along their beautiful girlfriends. They did not have to twist our arms as these girls are adorable and very much a part of our family. We are all from the greater San Francisco Bay Area, Ca, USA More spefically Santa Rosa in the beautiful Sonoma Valley. We left the morning after our youngest son Spencer and his girlfriend of three years, Brittney graduated. Our oldest son is Garrett 20, a soon to be senior at Sacramento State is traveling with his girlfriend Katie. A special thank you to Garrett for painstakingly operating the video camera on every game drive. A sincere thank you to the girls for putting up with the early mornings and hours of bone shaking safari trails. To Spencer who just brightens my day by showing up and smiling. And an especially big thank you to my Patrick for making this trip possible for all of us and for leading us on this marvelous journey.

"Privileged are those who get to travel to Kenya. Blessed are those who get to share the adventure with their children". We were quick to rise and prepare for our new day in the Mara. The lodge served pastries, coffee and hot chocolate before the game drive and it was appreciated. We would bring to-go cups in the van to warm our hands and sip. The kids are not ‘morning’ folk, but somehow the game drives wakes you up in a really good mood. I just loved watching the boys and their reactions to the day and the adventure. How lucky they are I thought, and how lucky I am to be sharing this with them. What a very special memory and a very special way to bond our family even closer. It is day ... read more

"Calm my restless heart. Awaken my soul. Fill every molecule of my body with gratitude. Sit quietly and try not to forget to breath as we are here; Kenya's Masai Mara, and it is not a dream" We had been driving about 5 to 6 hours and my back was smarting, my bottom numb and I was way beyond needing to utilize the restroom... but somehow as Peter said, "Yes this is the Masai Mara" all that just went away. The strange thing is I never really thought that going to Africa would touch me in the way that it did. After all it was Pat's trip of a lifetime. But it was one of those extraordinary moments when I was absolutely sure that I would never forget, in memory or heart, this land. I can ... read more

"I was mesmerized by the simple exquisiteness of the Masai grasslands. Countless shades of gold and green waving beneath skies of the purest blues I have ever seen. And like little gold nuggets hidden in this already beautiful canvas were the animals. I hope you enjoy the many pictures I have posted here. The skies were intriguing and ever changing. I wanted to burn these images into my mind only to recall them at some later time when I needed to have my soul stirred". Nelda We were up, packed and eating breakfast by 6:45a.m. Can't get over how good the food is but if you asked the kids they might roll their eyes. As we pulled onto the road leaving the lodge we see a pride of lion just sauntering down the road right in ... read more

“When the beauty of one multiplies to thousands and that beauty is overwhelming, you are at Lake Nakuru”, Nelda Day 2: Leaving Nairobi and traveling to the Sarova Lion Hill Lodge in Lake Nakuru National Park: As we left the hotel and traveled through the city of Nairobi I was surprised by the number of professional looking women walking through town on their way to school or work. There were cars everywhere but a lot of people walking as well. Similar to San Francisco minus the yellow cabs and hills. The many official looking vehicles with gunmen got our attention. I was told not to photograph the people, especially any official building or person. Since I'm a goodie-two-shoes and I am the ultimate teacher's pet, I obey. We all had a good laugh at my expense, ... read more

"Kenya is the Keeper of the Medicine that Heals the Soul" Nelda 1st day in Nairobi, Kenya: There was little I did not want to photograph. I wish there was a way we could photograph what the heart was feeling. Maybe that is what these blogs are trying to accomplish. To share how the heart experiences the trip. The memories from Kenya will be forever burned into my heart. It feels like a secret, a small glimps of heaven. I wish this trip on everyone. My heart still pangs for the land, the colors, the people, the silence. I can't imagine not returning. I feel like I have left a very special new friend. One that is the keeper of the medicine that heals the soul. One for which I yearn. We flew out of San ... read more
