Mt. Lassen
Mt. Lassen
Didn't get to hike this today. I think you can figure out why.
10/01 8:14PM Pacific Time (the blog dated today was actually yesterday; there are descrepancies sometimes in the dates/times). Got to Lassen Volcanic National Park by 10AM this morning to find out that our weather check from yesterday was obsolete. We had planned on summiting Mt. Lassen (over 10,000 feet, with a hike that gained approx 2,000 feet to the summit), but there was a snow storm last night that dumped a fair amount of snow, so we had to alter our plans. We did a lovely hike to Terrace Lake and Paradise Meadows. We did encounter a fair amount of snow, [View Full Entry]

A sample of the witty banter you are missing because we have not yet upgraded to live audio/video: Episode 1: Leaving Prospect It's a dark, rainy morning as the car pulls away from the Prospect Hotel and B&B in Prospect, OR. Jim: I think we can just keep going on this road and come back to 101. Susan: I think we have to go back the other way. Anyway I have to stop at the post office. They stop at the PO then continue, retracing their route into town. A few minutes later they pass the road that went through Prospect [View Full Entry]

Travel Trivia Question and it is an easy one. What is the picture of? And you can't say, "a field." It's a specific type of field. Bonus Question: Where was this picture taken. As in, state and location within the state. The most specific answer wins so adding cities, towns, etc. to your answer will improve your chances, or not, depending. Susan has racheted up the quality of the gifts, mainly because she didn't leave it up to me, so just be aware this could be worth something good. Good luck. Moose and Squirrel [View Full Entry]

Sunset

Cape Arago on the Oregon Coast
We write from the Prospect Inn and Motel, a Historic Inn on route 62 to Crater Lake. We are in the Zane Grey Room (he apparently stayed here). I don't think I've ever read a Zane Grey novel but that wasn't a requirement. I thought I would recap our trip over the last week or so. After we left the Hoh Rainforest, home of the Banana Slug, we hit parts of the Washington coast on our way to Astoria, OR. The WA coast, where accessible, is mostly shallow inlets and mudflats, filled with Canada Geese, ducks and herons. Not quite as [View Full Entry]

Who would've thought that you couldn't find wi-fi on the beach in Oregon? Well, we've had a tough time. Reason: coffee kiosks. With a kiosk every block there are no coffee shops, the home of wi-fi nationwide. So we have finally found one in Reedsport, our last stop on the coast (probably--but who knows, it's early in the day). We are heading to Crater Lake either today or tomorrow. Camping the first night where it is projected to be in the 20s. That will be our coldest night yet so we'll see how it goes. The pay off is that after [View Full Entry]

It seems that no matter where we go there is road construction. Yesterday we couldn't get into Oregon because it was closed. Sorry! Actually it was just the bridge from WA but it has become a joke. No matter how small the town, there is road construction. Orange barrels rule America! Thanks for the info. Windie. We were in Astoria last night, which seemed pretty nice. Cannon City is close by so we'll check it out today. We drove along Lake Crescent twice going to Olympic but we didn't stay there. Maybe next time. It reminded us of Loch Lomand in [View Full Entry]

I wanted to see one of these in the rain forest and eagle eye Jim spotted one for me so I cozied up for a close up view.
Leaving the lovely Lake Quinault Lodge. Just adding a few pics to get you all through the next few days until you hear from us again. We miss you John. Not too late to quit the job (or call in sick for a week) and meet us in Yosemite. Just throwing that out there. No correct answers on the last trivia question, but Betsy Whaley gets the bonus question prize (a lesser prize, but still a prize). Hops was the correct answer (ingredient in Jim’s favorite drink and a nice potpourri). Again, just to clarify the last question, we met some [View Full Entry]

Rachel & Everyone: Thanks for the info. Lake Crescent is just a little north so I don't think we will stay there since we already did our Lodge nights (but we could camp nearby). But we'd appreciate any suggestions on places to visit or stay on the Oregon coast. We'll be doing several days along the ocean when we turn around later this week. We don't have a book yet but we may buy one. Especially we'd like another nice lodge type deal to hang out a couple of days (2 or 3) so bring on your ideas. ALAN, this seems [View Full Entry]

Well, after reading Squirrel's blog I guess the trip is about over. Who knew! Here are some quotes from the trip: “It’s warmer here because we’re closer to the sun.” Dennis, our campground neighbor in Yellowstone explaining why it was so hot. He also said, “I can’t go to bed until I count 10 stars,” then proceeded to count them. When asked about the weather forecast, the young girl working at the forest service office in Sheridan, WY looked out the window and said, “Yeah, it might rain later.” Our camp host at Indian Trees campground [View Full Entry]
