We woke to another dreary, rainy day, but tubed and trained our way to Stratford Upon Avon through the lush English countryside. We trugged into town from the train station, and were grateful the rain stopped as we turned the corner to "Shakespeare's Birthplace" (museum and house where he was born and raised)--just behind a half dozen high school tour groups from Italy! The place had a bit of a Disneyesque atmosphere (probaby the hordes of tourists contributed to this impression), but we all felt it was worth seeing. The rooms in the house gave a good sense of daily life of the period. Unfortunately, because of all the waiting in line and the limited train schedules on Sunday, that was all we had time to see of Stratford before hopping on our train to Oxford. ... read more

Got back from seeing Les Miserables a bit ago (awesome), and I realize I'm quickly slipping behind in my entries. But I really need to start getting to bed before midnight, so I just wanted to promise you that I'll try to catch up tomorrow night with a triple blog entry. In the meantime, here are a couple of pictures to tide you over... ... read more

Saturday, July 5 We started off the day with a morning of "special family moments" revolving around our attempt to get discounted Lion King tickets to tonight's performance, only to discover after waiting in line for a half-hour at the famous "Tkts" booth in Leicester Square, that Lion King is the only production which doesn't release tickets for discounted sale. We hunkered down for a (too) late breakfast to get our blood sugar up and crankiness down, which was the slowest and most unsatisfactory meal we've had yet on the trip. Adding to the fun, was the post-breakfast search for the Lyceum Theater so we could pony up for the full-price tickets at the box office, rather than risk buying from the scalpers and the possibility of getting counterfeit tickets. Since better seats were to be ... read more

Friday, July 4--Happy 4th of July to you all! Today was filled with new impressions and spectacular scenery. We took a bus tour that included Salisbury, Stonehenge and Bath. We were rushed at every stop, of course, but we enjoyed our "taste" of each. Our guide was very informative and witty, but she didn't compare with the experience we had with passionate Bill in Scotland--the difference in their approaches was kind of reflective of the stereotyped national temperments of the two countries... Salisbury Cathedral was gorgeous and dramatic, a soaring gothic masterpiece. After reading The Pilars of the Earth, Dave, Chris and I had deeper insight into the construction, politics, and culture of the day from which such an amazing building emerged. We opted out of the tour group's pub lunch and found a Rick Steves' ... read more

Thursday, July 3 The weather was "spotty"--we dodged a few raindrops early on, then managed to be inside during the worst of it. Our very full day began when we emerged from the Westminster tube station right in the middle of the iconic London sights we'd been waiting to see. Big Ben and Parliament were so much more impressive than we expected! The Churchill Museum and Churchill War Rooms: The War Rooms are in the actual bunker Churchill and his top advisers and staff lived in during World War II bombing raids of London. They are furnished down the the smallest detail exactly as they were then. Very well done. The adjoining Churchill Museum was a modern, engaging, highly interactive series of exhibits that warmed the heart of this former museum educator by their presentation ... read more

Just a brief entry, to let you know we've arrived in London. We love our apartment, and the location is good, too. We discovered several streets of restaurants, cafes, small stores, etc. just a few blocks away. Close to two tube stations, as well (Victoria and Pimlico). Tonight we ate at a great little restaurant in the neighborhood that I had read about--and it wasn't pub food, thank god--had wild mushroom risotto with truffle oil that was to die for!! The bummer is (and those of you following Wimbledon probably already know this) that although it cleared up here late this afternoon, and the evening was almost balmy, rain and thunderstorms are predicted for our entire stay here!!! Anyway, since internet is faster here, I thought I'd include some of today's photos. By the way, thanks ... read more

So they have wireless internet on the train! Thought I'd write a bit more about yesterday, but realize there's really no way to explain the beauty of what we saw in the Highlands of Scotland... Our photos (many taken out the moving bus window) don't do it justice, either... In addition to absorbing the scenery, we were given a crash course in Scottish history (I think I've finally got it straight), culture and ecology by our multi-faceted and entertaining guide. Although he looked a bit like an aging "surfer dude", Bill had a background in ecology and had been a park ranger and in the IT industry before finding his true calling. (He also had been to San Luis Obispo and asked us if we were familiar with Linnaea's!!) Our 28 person mini-bus traveled through all ... read more

Well, it's all finally caught up to us, so I'm opting for bed, instead of blogging in the wee hours like I did last night... Just want to let everyone know we had a great day, despite the fact that we were on a bus tour for 12 hours. What made our trip across Scotland to Loch Ness and back so great was the incredible scenery, enhanced by the most dramatic (some might call it bad) weather, and our fantastic guide, Bill--a young man with the soul of a storyteller and a heart shaped like Scotland. Will tell you more tomorrow, after we arrive in London. No photos tonight either--they each take about 15 minutes to download!! Thanks for your comments--it's great being connected to everyone at home.... read more

We spent our first full day in Edinburgh being tourists to the max! Started off by eating breakfast at the Elephant House Cafe (and Sharon even tried haggis). All you Harry Potter fans will know that this is the place where JK Rowling penned much of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (better known in the US as HP and the Sorcerer's Stone), the book that started it all. After our pilgrimage, we wandered around much of New Town, trying to locate the hop-on/hop-off tour bus stop, and saw lots of interesting landmarks in the process, including the Walter Scott monument. Finally on the bus, we strained to comprehend our guide's brogue, got off at Edinburgh Castle stop, where we spent about 4 hours exploring this fascinating place and getting our first dose of the complexities ... read more

We're all here safe and sound, flights and connections went smoothly, but we are minus 2 suitcases (Sharon's & Drew's) and exhausted (we've now been up for 30 hours). The airlines located our missing bags and promises them later tonight or maybe tomorrow morning, and exhaustion is being overcome for the moment by the European Soccer Championship game just about to start on the television. So all is well... We love our first impressions of Edinburgh, the old buildings and the charming architecture and enjoyed our first meal at the World's End Pub, down the street (Royal Mile) from the Radisson. Tomorrow we're going to spend the day in Edinburgh, maybe go on a hop-on, hop-off bus tour of the city, then tour the castle and other sights. Tomorrow night we have scheduled a "Murder and ... read more
