Please click on the first pick to enlarge and browse through all pix. If you are interested in more (f.e. find out why we were not so impressed by Australia) then please go on reading below in the summary. The itinerary contains more detailed information about certain destinations Australia, east coast & central Coming from Asia, despite of all the warnings we already received about Australia, we still are quite shocked: everything is really expensive (even when compared to European standards) and if, as a consequence, you need to stick to a budget, you have to be prepared to stay in hostels and sleep in dorms with hoards of 18 year old backpackers. That is probably why so many youngsters first work there. Overall we also were not so impressed by the scenery/ landscapes on the ... read more

Asia » Malaysia February 9th 2010

Click on the first picture to enlarge it and browse through the pix. Below you find a short summary and our itinerary including some travel tips: Peninsular Malaysia Together with Singapore and Brunei, Malaysia is the most developed and richest country in South East Asia, which makes it also the least interesting one for me. It is more expensive than other South East Asian countries, and compared to Thailand or the Philippines, the locals, although still friendly, seem to be less open, happy and relaxed. The beaches we have seen, at least at the west coast, also are less impressive than the ones we have seen in other places in the region. For me the most interesting part about the country is the mix of Asian cultures and religions living in harmony together: you see Chinese ... read more

Asia » Thailand January 18th 2010

(click on the first pic to enlarge and browse through and let the pix do the talk. if you are interested in more, well be my guest and read all about it below....) (always) good to be back again After traveling in the Philippines with only a few tourists, I was wondering if we still would like Thailand, especially in the high season. However also at my 6th time in Thailand I didn't get disappointed: if you try to avoid the main touristic spots (especially Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi and Koh Phangan) you still can enjoy nice beaches, great food and very relaxed people at very reasonable prices. Due to rapid tourist development in Thailand don't expect places to look the same, if you come to visit them again after a couple of years. ... read more

Asia » Philippines December 28th 2009

Philippines - South East Asia's best kept secret The reason for me choosing the Philippines as a travel destination, was that I have seen quite a bit of South East Asia already and that I hadn't heard from a single backpacker that he or she had been there. The experiences we had exceeded our positive expectations by far: beautiful deserted islands, mountains, rice terraces, volcano's, excellent diving, surfing, relaxed & friendly locals who all speak English; all that very affordable and the best of it: except from Boracay there are hardly any tourists/ backpackers and the few we met were all very nice. We liked it so much we had to extend our stay here several times from two to six weeks. Lonely Planet brings it to the point: '...The so-called backpacker trail has yet to ... read more

Asia » Japan November 20th 2009

Japan - we are loving it! Crazy as expected Whereas in China we had to register with our passport in order to be able to check our mail in an internet cafe, in Japan you get a whole room including a shower if you want to use the internet. Why do you need a shower?, I want to know. 'Because people, especially students, live in internet cafes.' I ve been told. Aha, I see. A street further down the road I see signs with cats. I wonder what this is for. 'It's advertisements for cat cafes'. Cat cafes? Yes, cafes where you can enjoy a drink and pet cats. Why would you want to do so I ask. 'Because it's very relaxing.' Aha, that's how it works here. .... We also visit a maid cafe, a ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong November 16th 2009

Hong Kong - not so long We have a stop over flight there and just stay 2 days to visit Els' pen pal (yes once upon a time in a world without the internet, people wrote letters) & friends she met at the work camp in Mongolia. We are not so impressed with what we see: a big crowdy expensive city and people are not the most polite and friendly ones. We go to the peak, the main view point and tourist attraction in HK, but bad weather is following us again: the nice view is covered with fog, so we hardly see anything at all. Besides that we figure out that shopping is one of the main activities in Hong Kong, but everything is really expensive, so we skip it. For me the main attraction ... read more

WARNING: the following update contains a lot of text. The country and our experiences here were so great, I couldn't do it in less words. So if you don't have the time just click through the pix and scroll down to the final conclusion and summary, that captures the essence of our trip to China. China - Land of the Chinese Chinese restaurants are everywhere and it's full of Chinese,..and so many. People here move fast forward - it feels like someone pushed fast forward on the remote control, and crowds push us around, but we push back. Spitting on the streets and in buses is the norm, so I adjust. From the least crowded place on earth to the most crowded one, from blue skies to grey skies: Although we have a great time, people, ... read more

Volcanos, roosters, surf and sting rays Why nicaragua? here's the rational answer: it's been a tip among surfers for the last years, so there are waves and I could try surfing again, there are volcanos and els loves volcanos, locals are supposed to be friendly, it's a bit like costa rica, but way cheaper, and most importanly I haven't heard of many people, or any friends that have been there, so probably the best time to go before mass tourism kicks in. However the real reason for going there is sacred reich, a thrash band I grew up to in the eighties. somehow their EP surf nicaragua got stuck in my mind. so years later with the comeback of retro thrash, the song poped up in my mind again, was looking for new travel locations, nicaragua, ... read more
