How time flies when you are having fun. That is what we have had in England. We haven’t let the damp weather get us down. Today looks like a real mix. We wake to some sunshine but rain is forecast. Hopefully we’ll be well on our way when it arrives. We pack our bags and reload the car. There is slightly less to load on the return journey. We have drunk the French wine, handed over the birthday gifts, and added a few clothing items to fill the empty space. One or two extra surprises have also been added. That 30 kg limit is getting close. Farewells are sometimes hard but we have all seen each other a number of times recently and Skype helps. So we promise to be together soon, either back in England ... read more

The last two weeks have vanished. Tomorrow we return to France. Today we go shopping and then have a family lunch date. With a finite time for this holiday it is hard to plan in advance how much time is to be spent in each wonderful place we have visited. That is what has happened in the UK section of our trip. As on previous trips we’ll be back. We start the day with a shopping trip to nearby Watford. There appears to be a great deal more development since our last trip. We shop our way through various stores collecting a few necessary items needed for the last week of our trip. Our toothpaste doesn’t quite last the journey. Lunch today is in the country village of Sarratt. Our daughter has enjoyed a drink at ... read more

The UK’s weather has not been very kind to us on this trip. Everyone keeps telling us about the heat wave earlier in the month but that isn’t reassuring when we see the forecast and see what is predicted to drift in from the west. So today we get our coats and brollies ready for a day out in London. Our focus will be the Museum of London and the exhibits featuring the early settlement of the city. With Oyster card at the ready we leave Northwood on the Underground traveling through the northwest suburbs of London such as Harrow and Wembley. From above ground we can see the stadium and backyards of homes backing onto the rail corridor. Blackberries beside the track are ripening but unfortunately impossible to get to. Perhaps we need to head ... read more

Country pubs provide a good breakfast. We have a modified “full English”. Our fellow guests have the works. By the size of the “works” its just as well we didn’t. Looks like it will be a great day out. We have some time to explore this part of Cheshire, especially Shrewsbury so we’re on the hunt for the famous biscuit, the Shrewsbury biscuit. Leaving Northwich we drive south through beautiful countryside. It doesn’t take us long before we are driving along roads with signs to the Nantwich Show. Fortunately it is not on until tomorrow and we’ll be in London. Even without the show today the narrow roads are busy. As we enter Shrewsbury we hear about a World Worm Charming Championship to be held in Nantwich. Perhaps we’d better u-turn athough we are not sure ... read more

We wake to the sound of vehicles driving on wet roads outside our accommodation. The forecast was for bright sunny weather. Perhaps when we get to Liverpool it will be a glorious day. To enable a quick and dry departure we drive the car onto the footpath in front of our “shop” and load our bags. We hope the ever vigilant parking warden is still at home having breakfast. Our drive takes us west towards Chester. We have been to Chester before so we won’t stop. It would be worth stopping but not today. Signs along the roadside point to the Nantwich Show. We assume it is their equivalent of a New Zealand A&P Show. We start to expect heavy traffic as we get closer but fortunately the show starts on Wednesday. We will be long ... read more

Last night’s next door party finished at 5:30 am. It is another gloomy start but there are some promising breaks. Jane has offered to take us to Birmingham so we sit back, relax and enjoy the drive. It is Sunday and all is relatively quiet on the roads. Perhaps everyone is still recovering from last night’s party. Everything is straight forward until we get to Junction 5. Closed! Deviation! Oh help. We drive on to the next exit and leave the motorway. We notice Jane wants us to return to Junction 5. We can see ourselves spending the day circulating between Junction 4 and 6. We just have to defy Jane’s instructions and follow the deviation signs. Perhaps we’ll have an understanding navigator who will soon pick up on what is happening and guide us to ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Leicestershire » Leicester July 22nd 2017

One of our many reasons for visiting the Midlands was to visit the city of Leicester and catch up with Richard III. It is a sunny Saturday morning and it all looks good for our visit. It is a relatively short drive but it often takes longer than we think. We have a plan but like all flexible plans it might change. Once we have visited Leicester we hope to drive north to Nottingham, back through Derby, and “home”. The drive into Leicester is straight forward until we need to find a car park. Jane is no good with deviations and other peculiarities of inner city streets. Fortunately the car parks are well sign posted and we find a very good park in a large modern shopping centre. Shopping can come later. Richard is waiting. We ... read more

England is having a period of unsettled weather at the moment. The cynics will say, “What’s new”. Today is one of those days. There will be some sun, some cloud and some rain. We hope to be in the right place at the right time. We leave London for a four night experience in the Midlands. We have not visited the area before and so we have to see for ourselves what is on offer. We plot a course for Bicester. Why Bicester? They have a very new, very large Tesco on the outskirts of town. No. The real reason is to fool Jane into taking us north the way we want to go. She has a habit of finding the most difficult and the busiest route. So our drive to Bicester is reasonably straight forward ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Berkshire » Windsor July 20th 2017

The English summer is true to form. There’ll be some rain, cloud and sunshine today. At the moment there is light drizzle. After we get our chores done we prepare for our trip to Windsor. We have not visited Windsor before but have seen the castle tower from afar. We will call today’s trip an exploratory trip, we won’t be visiting the castle. We offer to drive our hosts on this outing. We leave Jane behind and use local knowledge to get through the highways and by-ways without going on the dreaded M25. We are equipped with jackets, raincoats, umbrellas, sun hats, and cameras. It is a picturesque approach to the town. Tree lined streets, nice houses, and the River Thames meandering by. We follow a sign to a convenient carpark close to the centre of ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Kew July 19th 2017

Following last night’s thunderstorm we were hoping for a clear warm day. Unfortunately the day looks as though it will rain at any moment. If we put our activities on hold because of the weather then we wouldn’t do anything. Our plan for today is to visit Kew Gardens. We haven’t been there before. To get to Kew we take the train. Actually three trains. All trains travel above ground but two are called underground. Quite confusing really. We start with the Metropolitan Underground, change to the Jubilee Underground, and then finally the Overground train. The train journey around London takes about ninety minutes with connections working perfectly. The walk from the station to the Gardens is along a tree lined street with some very nice houses, all of the same design and age. Painters are ... read more
