It suddenly occured to me yesterday, as our driver pulled out in front of a crowd of 10 motorcycles, that people in Cambodia drive on the right (where they choose a particular side at all), and roads in Thailand are all left hand drive. I wonder a) what the sheer mayhem is on each country border, and b) if this was administrated by two independent parties, or simply one bored politician with a very dark sense of humour. Unfortunately, such acrobatics will be subject to endless conjecture as we are circumnavigating all land border crossings. Never mind. Yesterday was the day of Angkor Wat. It seems strange that such a massive amount of ancient temples could have been undiscovered for over a thousand years, when now there are countless roads heading straight for it. On the ... read more

At last, the unfortunate time arrived to leave the tropical island paradise of Koh Tao. After taking pictures of just about everything to make up for a curious lack of them beforehand (including a top notch photo of an aerial photo to confuse everyone), we visited another ferry to meet the train further up the mainland. etc etc long journey with many a delay and mouldy toilet (actually the womans' that I accidentally used - possibly the damage-limitation part of my subconscience making me avoid the mens). Eventually arriving in Cambodia by plane - thankfully the airborne affair appeared more in shape than previous local ferry rides. Phnom Penh is a seemingly much hotter city than Bangkok - possibly because the sunlight can actually pierce through the smog, or perhaps because the swathes of idle TukTuks ... read more

Koh Tao is a rather amazing island. Only about 2 x 5 km, basically the entire set of tourism and indeed population are along one km long bay. The rest of the island is a few dirt tracks leading around to a village or a hut or a lost tramp in the sun. Most of the island has no electricity from 8am to 8pm, and power cuts here are about as common as crumbs in your underwear after a 10 hour car journey. Sometimes even the entire island's internet just turns off intermittently. Anyway. I'm here on the second largest diving resort in the world (and the largest diving school) to do some diving (interestingly theres little to do which doesnt revolve around this). And I would seriously recommend anyone with a spare wad of bills ... read more

As another few incredibly lazy days have passed on a beach, I have come to the educated conclusion that life on holiday is undeniably good. Apart from an unfortunate case of our bathroom smelling of sewage (or male public toilet), there is everything you could want. Providing what you want is not an endless supply of large rubber statues, or other such non-necessities. Even massages (for the small price of one pound fifty per hour) and a tyre swing into the (borderline deep enough to be safe) sea are here. Seeing increasing numbers of people with bandaged knees, arms and ankles sustained from the combination of 2.50 a day motorbike hire and incredibly entertaining hills with vastly inadequate surfacing. Having not ridden a bike once before in my life I'm happy not to begin over here. ... read more

Finally, reaching Koh Phangan (spelling?), I feel like the holiday (ie being lazy) has started. Full moon party (beach party every 28 or so days where everyone turns into werewolves and eat the shit out of each other) meant we had to get here as early as possible. So after reaching friendly, albeit smoggy and smelly Bangkok, we left that evening to get the night train down the peninsula to a quaint little village. Now, I doubt any of you have ever tried to get to sleep with someone hammering you. For the small minority who have, you have some idea of sleeping on this train. Although we were given 'clean' sheets, the combination of fully clothed and being at the top of the horribly hot carriage meant within 30 seconds of lying down the bed ... read more
