We arrived in this city and, almost instantly, were pleased we had sacrificed the not-oft-recommended Hue in favour of another night here. The town is not huge, and although it has a large tourist population, the locals still clearly overwhelm. The centre of the town is made of many old buildings (probably from some time in the past), and cars and coaches are banned from driving around it - only annoying locals on mopeds and annoying tourists on bicycles plague the streets. After finding a place to stay, we ventured into this old area to look for something to eat. It became quite clear, quite quickly that there was a large party going on, that everyone was invited to. This, it turns out, was the full moon party in Hoi An, where everybody stays up late ... read more

The train from Hanoi was, in all honesty, something we had never done before. I'm not the kind of person to pretend I've got an overnight train in Vietnam when I haven't really. Each compartment (because we got the cheaper 'hard sleeper' - hard presumably meaning difficult as opposed to solid) contained six people, and there was no sign of curtains to separate one bed from another. I could have made a social faux pas when I decided I was too hot and stripped down to my boxers, despite the locals sleeping fully clothed. I thought it would be ok - I covered myself with a grubby blanket, only to wake at 3am to find I had kicked it off and the man on the opposite side was staring at me. In fact, I hope it ... read more

Currently am sitting in a small (and possibly the only) internet cafe in Hanoi. The only other one I could find was actually a 'Playstation 2 Cafe' that I resisted the urge to enter. The journey here was a long one, but thankfully we made the right choice in getting out of Laos, by flying. Where we made the wrong choice was by choosing an airline that apparently doesn't publish their safety records. Telling the story even more in reverse, we took a third and final coach journey out of Vang Vieng and back to Luang Prabang, for our airport rendezvous. This turned out to be the worse of the three because, despite being only (!) nine hours, I had left my inflatable neck cushion in my big bag that was somewhere else on the bus. ... read more

Tubing - everybody hires a large rubber ring, a dry bag, (and a life jacket if they're cool) and sits on a river. People working at bars on either side try to pull them in. Everyone gets very drunk/wet/muddy. Approaching the shop where we hire our equipment, who should we bump into but the "Whoaaay!" guys from bowling (It's funny. It seems everyone on this side of the world knows what kind of person you mean as soon as you say "Whoaaay!"). It's their second day in a row, and they highly recommend it. We get in the river at the start (features: Very muddy, not wild but quite fast, possible water-borne diseases), and immediately feel the first runs of cold water on us that will be a continuous feature of the day. Deciding to stop ... read more

This is quite a difficult town to spell. It starts off quite hard, but now I'm not actually sure of the exact spelling, so far I've seen Luangprabang, Luangphrabang, Luang-prahbang, Louangprabang, making it all that more difficult. This is one of the main attractions in the country of Laos. Quite a small town, apparently a haven for those tourists who just want to come and enjoy the slow boat before coming and enjoying nice food. Thus, there are more than the average number of middle age people here compared to Southeast Asia in general. Since we decided to do something cultural for once, we wanted to spend a day visiting the Plain of Jars, a large field in the middle of nowhere full of big concrete containers. Nobody knows how they got there. However, after doing ... read more

Now it was that time everybody looks forward to at one point in their lives - the journey to the 'relaxed' country of Laos. This started by getting into a minibus in Chiang Mai without any seatbelts but lots of legroom. During this few hour journey, where Holly was convinced the driver was falling asleep and I started thinking about death, we stopped at a small shop in the middle of nowhere with many samples of nuts. We also stopped in a market with some women swatting away flies with butterfly nets. In retrospect, could have been catching them for farming for the deep-fried maggot market. This was a strange place to stop, as it was only half an hour before reaching Chiang Khong. The driver probably needed a nap. Chiang Khong. What a nasty toilet ... read more

And so, a nice early morning at 9. Which wasn't too bad because we had been sensible the previous night and only stayed up till 1. The walk home was a little interesting/unnerving. We encountered two gangs of possibly rabid dogs that thankfully distracted each other allowing us to make our escape. Also got locked out because the hotel person didn't tell us how to get in when it's late. Were saved by someone just leaving for a night out, and managed to sneak in through the door. Note to self - there's no point in spending extra on air conditioning if you turn it up to 25 degrees anyway. But anyway. Got on the taxi (back of a truck) only an hour after meeting and tried to settle down for the hour or so journey. ... read more

Upon arriving in Chiang Mai, we had to find a guesthouse. Though after wandering in the sweltering heat and carrying heavy bags and having not a great nights sleep and being smelly and needing the toilet, we settled for the one we had been dropped off at for free about an hour before. It looked ok, and the woman was (and probably still is) very nice. Next, we needed transport - not happy with mean expensive tuk-tuk drivers, we decided bikes would be a better option. We looked around and found ourselves a good deal for 40 Baht per bike for a day, saving a whole 15p on the competition. 15p that pales in comparison to a set of fully functioning brakes, that, apparently, were not included on my bike. Cycling is by far the best ... read more

Here we are again, a new summer and back where I was a year ago. I could mention the amazing flight. Seeing as we were flying with an Indian airline, we were naturally served copious amounts of curry. Of course they were all pretty good. For airline food. Although the one that came up around 3am Indian time was a little unnecessary. So. By time we got to Bangkok we had had about 3 then 3 hours of sleep in around 48 hours. Although aren't too sure about the actual time because we still haven't worked out the time difference. Naturally, first thing we wanted to do was find a nice place to have a nap. But first, some administration - we needed our headache inducing Vietnamese visa, from the embassy on a place called Wireless ... read more

It's very strange. No matter where we're going or when it is, we always find ourselves back at Khao San road thinking "How on earth did we end up here again?". Of course anyone who's done South East Asia will know exactly what I'm talking about. And anyone due to come back should definitely try a Pad Thai 4 egg ("4 EGG??"). But only for a major protein boost if you've just sliced your leg open on a fast moving spearhead. As we are reaching the end of this ever more awesome holiday, it was time for some of the more cultural divulgences that we are bound to remember in years to come. So after getting suitably plastered, we visited the Pat Pong district for a Ping Pong show. Now. You may think that naked women ... read more
