A three month trip around WA in 2013, that was our plan and amazingly after much wishing, planning and preparing, this dream has become a reality! We survived a frantic couple of months on the summer Surf Life Saving circuit combined with busy work and school lives, 18th birthday party planning and holiday preparations. Somehow we did it!! The car is newly equipped with snorkel and custom made roof rack for the tinnie, the van is upgraded with solar panel and battery and boat motor holder - Matt the handy man has excelled! Finally, car and van are packed full ready for adventure: 1 tinnie, 5 surfboards, 1 surf mal, 2 nipper mals, fishing rods, snorkels and goggles etc etc etc.....and the list goes on. On Saturday 13th April we completed our packing, farewelled our beautiful ... read more

So it is that we pull in to Adelaide on this winters afternoon 81 days after our departure. We have travelled a total of 14000kms and spent approximately $4000 on diesel. We have stayed at 37 different locations, ensuring a well organised routine 37 set ups and 37 pack ups later. We have travelled the Nullarbor to the coast, the Kimberley’s and the NT and back to our home turf of SA. What an amazing trip! I have no doubt that we will have a lot of wonderful memories of our journey to the west for many years to come. Here marks the end of our adventures and our stories of Heading West in 2008. We know that this will be the inspiration for many more Australian driving trips to come. Heading West 2008 1. Streaky ... read more

After another seven hours in the car and with an additional 600kms behind us we pulled into the Pimba roadhouse. There was a basic camp area situated next to it. We decided that it would do and set up camp and headed to the roadhouse for dinner at ‘Spud’s Pub’. We thought that we had better dress up so we even wore our sneakers with our trackies! Although it was your basic middle of nowhere pub, we walked in to find a fireplace, small playground and of course beer, wine and food. What more could you ask for? With full stomachs we headed back for our last sleep in the van. We played our last round of bard games with the girls and settled in for an early night. Alas sleep evaded us as we woke ... read more

After five and a half hours of following the white line we pulled into Marla. The girls wore off some energy in a totem tennis tournament while dinner was being prepared. After our mild night in Alice our warm weather came abruptly to an end. It was freezing overnight! Carrie started the night in t-shirt and ended in trackies, t-shirt, long sleeve top and hoodie. I woke to Matt’s laughter as he rolled over to see a face peeking out from the hood and wrapped tightly in the quilt. I think we are definitely driving in the wrong direction as the hot clear days become more and more cloudy and the nights from mild to freezing. What are we doing? We were keen to cover lots of km’s today and get as close to Pt Augusta ... read more

We drove into Alice Springs in the early afternoon with a view of the Mc Donnell Ranges spanning the horizon. We headed straight to the caravan park, set up and raced to burn off some energy at the playground and jumping pillow. The afternoon remained sunny but we were prepared for a cold night. Surprisingly the chill held off and we enjoyed a good sleep and woke to a sunny day. We all launched into action and with great skill and sharing of tasks were packed up in no time - This is one very well rehearsed routine! We were soon on the road again. ... read more

After a late getaway we departed Katherine and headed south. We hoped to camp at Devil’s Marbles for the night but after six hours in the car our goal was unattainable and we set up camp at a rest area approximately 40kms from 3 Ways Roadhouse. After dinner and a recharge sleep (road train noise aside) we were ready to pack up and hit the road again. Dressed in shorts and t-shirts we enjoy our last warm day before our arrival in Alice and the cold weather that is sure to follow. ... read more

Friday afternoon we packed up our gear and headed back to Luke and Beth’s place to accompany their team down to Katherine as they complete in the Ultra Challenge - A unique race where individuals or teams cover 100km in a day in a series of events such as swim, run, kayak. It was a strange feeling to drive down the Stuart Highway out of Darwin with the thought of ‘when will we be back here again?’ Who knows? But our love of this place certainly pulls us back time and time again. Luke had booked us all into Knott’s Crossing resort for a couple of nights, a change of scenery from the van. So we piled ourselves and our gear into the little room - bigger than the van but not by much. Saturday was ... read more

It is hard to believe, but we are actually on the road headed for Darwin, back in familiar ‘territory’. We timed our arrival in Darwin with a much anticipated visit to the Mindal Beach Markets for some tasty tucker. It is with some sadness that we pull into Darwin knowing that our WA adventure has come to an end, but with excitement that we can spend a week catching up with family and friends visiting favourite locations. Highlights of our week in Darwin: •A much anticipated meeting with Uncle Luke and Beth and seeing their new home. •A tasty dinner of luksa, crepes, smoothies etc at Mindal Beach Markets. •A long awaited shopping expedition for Caz and Tahlia for some territory bargains. •Dinner and catch up with Mark, Alex, Annalise and Thomas and the transfer of ... read more

With a couple more days to fill in before we were due to head into Darwin we decided to spend our time on the Daly River and Woolianna. With a memory of camping trips of times gone by spent on the sandy banks of the Daly River, I was very surprised to be greeted with a shady caravan park complete with facilities, green grass and a pool! We set up camp, launched the tinnie and enjoyed a refreshing swim in the pool. The little girls were reacquainted with some friends that we had met at the hot springs so were very happy to spend a couple of days playing and swimming. We headed out for a serious family fishing trip on our first full day at the river, putting in a good four hours motoring along, ... read more

We set off from Kununurra expecting to drive approximately 350kms to the Victoria River, our plan being to spend a couple of nights and do a bit of fishing. Only problem was that we couldn’t find anywhere to camp. So an on the spot decision was made and we decided to continue on and on and on. We crossed the WA/NT border and continued on to Katherine stopping for a quick dinner eating pizza off the bonnet and then continued on with our mission to get to Douglas Hot Springs. We arrived at about 8:30 that night after travelling some 750km and loosing 1.5 hours of our day at the border crossing. Of the whole trip this was our only crazy night time driving and set up expedition. However we were back in the familiar territory ... read more
