Our first full day on the west coast of the Peloponnese and we are all a bit beat. We wake up at 10am and have a nice breakfast outside on our patio. We have four choices of juices to choose from: peach, cherry, and mix of some sort. We really need to expand the typical juice selection in America. We love these flavors. After nourishment, we head off to town to find the internet café. Finally, we post the first of our blogs. Of course, there are no pictures. We plan to add those as some point before we leave. I had no idea how much time it took to write up trips like this. There never seems to be time to catch up on documenting our trip even though it is pretty mellow. After ... read more

We’ve been living in Greek time, staying up late and getting up late, which is very unusual for Daniel and I. However, the heat seems to necessitate it. Rachel is in heaven. This morning is all about packing anyway, so there is no rush. We tell Brian that we will leave around 10am, but somehow that turns into 11am easily. Boy, did we string things all over the place in a short amount of time. While packing, I notice that Daniel’s Australian hat that my mother bought him a year or two ago is missing. Daniel loves this hat because it lets the breeze in and protects is face and neck from the sun, not to mention that it makes Rachel happy because she laughs every time he puts it on. Today, we are heading ... read more

Tuesday was amazingly hot. Our landlord, Brian, later said it got to 116 degrees F (well, technically he said it got to like 47 degrees C and Uncle Dan converted it on his computer, but close enough). Unfortunately that was the morning that the power went out. No air conditioning in that weather is pretty miserable, so Uncle Dan went on a walk. Bird watching was a little impossible though because as he said, “the birds were sweating too”. When Aunt Mary finally got up, she called Brian and made sure the air would be back up soon, so we decided to head out and it was cooler when we got back. We went to Nafplion, about half an hour away. I loved it there. Uncle Dan and Aunt Mary even put up with shopping ... read more

Rachel’s first full day in Greece began with a bit of excitement. A large Greek bug decided to join her in the bathroom. Since Rachel absolutely loves American bugs, Greek bugs were extra fun. Especially since she was not wearing contacts and it moved fast and was bigger than a quarter. Luckily, Rachel escaped safely. The bug, unfortunately, didn’t. One of our favorite things to do in Europe is to walk to the local bakery every morning for a pastry and some fresh bread. Since there was no hiking involved, Rachel joined us. I thought the bakery was two blocks away. It was 100 F by 10am, so the two blocks would have been fine. However, the bakery was a bit farther and we were all sweating by the time we got there. Inside, we ... read more

We have no time to add pictures right now. We'll add them later Saturday, June 23rd - taking off The only thing that sucks about traveling is the traveling. With this in mind, we loaded up the taxi at 4:30 in the morning and headed out to the airport. Daniel was dressed to kill: khaki traveling vest and pants, Australian outback hat, and ultralight shirt. Mary and Rachel started in on making fun of it, and the previously quiet driver chimed in “I thought you were going to Australia”, much to their delight. The airport was pretty standard issue. We did see a young girl get selected for the “air puff” screening machine. She squealed with delight when the air hit her, and giggled the rest of the way through security. We got to sit ... read more

Peloponnese-home basesMary WestHey there family! Friends of ours showed us this site so we thought we'd try it out for our trip to Greece this next week. I hope this works out well. Rachel, our niece, is arriving on Friday the 22nd and we take off early on the 23rd. We will arrive in Greece Sunday, June 24th mid-morning...after 18 hours of travel. Then, Daniel will drive 3 hours to our first rental house that we are staying in for three days on the east coast of the Peloponnese. We then stay for a week on the west coast of the Peloponnese before heading to Athens July 4th-8th. We leave the 8th of July and arrive home late on that same day. Greece is 10 hours ahead of Portland. We should have e-mail and cell phone ... read more
