Up early yet again to catch the 7am bus to Airlie Beach. We checked into Magnums and paid an few extra dollars for a private room, every now and then you need to do this just to get a decent nights sleep. Magnums is a lively hostel surrounded by trees and a small stream that runs by it, so the mosquito's were out in force again.. We were pretty tired and got an early night to make the most of having our own space again. The next morning we headed to Abel Point Marina to catch our Catamaran for our trip to the Whitsundays. The Catamaran was nice, but not as nice as the one we had previously sailed on in Cairns, it was called the Camira, previously named Tsunami, but was renamed out of respect ... read more

It was good to be back on a plane again, Alice Springs to Cairns in 1 hour 50 mins... phew. You really don't realise just how big Australia is until you've travelled it by road for a while. We were enjoying every minute of this particular plane journey. As it was a clear day you could see most of the land we were covering, 99% of it desert, but as we came into Queensland towards the coast it started to get much greener, then the sea as we turned to land at Cairns airport. We stayed at a nice hostel call the Bohemia Resort, it was a couple of Km out from the main strip but had a free regular shuttle bus operating all day. The rooms were the cleanest we'd seen so far and our ... read more

We arrived at about midday into Alice Springs train station, climbing off the train down some steps onto a dusty 'platform'. The heat was intense, about 45 degrees, but this is to be expected in the Northern Territory this time of year. We jumped in a taxi and headed straight to the YHA in town. This is probably one of the tattiest hostels we have stayed in- it was like an air raid shelter with a corrigated iron roof and dodgy little windows. So we decided to head out and have an explore around town, which wasnt actually as big as we thought it would be. We saw lots of Aborigines, which is something we hadn't seen in the other parts of Australia we've visited. Anzac Hill was a good vantage point to look out over ... read more

Not much to write here as we only stayed for one night. We arrived here in the evening from our tour of the Great Ocean Road and checked into our hostel, Cannon Street which was ok, managed to get our own room again. The first thing we noticed about Adelaide was how quiet it was in comparison to Sydney and Melbourne. We went out for some food and considering it was Saturday night there seemed to be noone around. We ended up going for a quiet drink with a nice French couple we had met on our tour. Sunday was no better, Martin was feeling ill all day, fortunately it was a quick 24 hour bug, although he still managed to get to the pub to watch an Arsenal game, typical. So, off we went in ... read more

Another early start to pick up our three day tour down the Great Ocean Road, final destination Adelaide. We managed to get two seats at the back of the bus next to each other after people faffing around over seating. Day One- We headed down to Bells Beach in Torquay, where they hold an annual surfing competition. It was actualy tiny but the surf looked pretty good (like we know anything !!). We had a look at the retail outlets, but didnt bother buying anything. Along the way we also saw the Lighthouse from the kids programme 'Around the Twist'. Pretty sad I know, but you suddenly worked out who was English on the bus as they were the ones hopping off to take pics. The Great Ocean Road itself was spectacular- the scenery was stunning- ... read more

After a very heavy weekend in Sydney meeting up for Paul and Emma's 29th birthday, we had a shockingly early start on the Monday morning to get our flight to Melbourne. Our flatmates Sam and Helen still managed to get up to say goodbye, and it was pretty sad to be leaving. Upon arrival in Melbourne reality hit when we checked into our 8 bed dorm in St Kilda- The double bed was a distant memory... The hostel we stayed in was Base, which looks pretty flashy from the outside and from the advertising but to be honest it was a bit shabby- was ok though for the few nights we were there. The reality of being away from our lovely apartment hit us as of course there were numerous interuptions and disrupted sleep patterns. We ... read more

Well here’s our latest update before we leave Sydney to head off on the next part of our journey around Australia. We both finished up work on 23rd December after 5 enjoyable months living and working here, it’s been a great experience and we’re definitely going to miss the Sydney lifestyle and the friends we’ve made here. We were both fortunate enough to work more than the 3 month limit on travelling visa’s as we acquired new temporary business visas through Laura’s work. So it was a relief not to have to find work for the final month leading up to Christmas. Sydney has got so much more busy as the summer has approached, Bondi was pretty quiet when we arrived in August but now it’s heaving every day and night, Backpackers everywhere. The heat has ... read more

Once again, it’s been ages since we’ve typed up an entry. We arrived in Australia on 29th July, a cold Friday morning. Coming out of Sydney airport was a shock to the system, no sunshine, wintertime in fact. We spent the first 2 weeks living in a hostel in the centre of town, nice place but we were glad to be leaving after 2 weeks. Sleeping in a 6 person dorm not knowing who you were going to wake up with in your room the next morning became a bit cumbersome. We met some nice people there though who we’ve been out with a few times since leaving the hostel. We did the usual sights around town, first stop Sydney Harbour and the Opera House… Sampled some of the many restaurants and bars scattered around the ... read more

The blog hasnt been updated in quite a while simply because we were too busy enjoying oursleves to bother getting pictures burned onto CD and sit down to publish them on the site, which is a good thing, but as this blog is also for us to look back on we thought we better write up Bali while the memories are still fresh. We managed to get the emergency exit seats for the flight from Singapore to Bali which was a result, lots of legroom ! Customs took ages and then we had a debate with the Customs officials as the Lonely Planet said UK citizens don't need a visa for travel in Indonesia, they insisted we did but we thought they were just trying to con us out of $25 each... turns out Lonely Planet ... read more

The journey from KL to Singapore was yet another eventful one. Instead of bugs, we were joined by the family from hell who were sat directly behind us. They were kicking our chairs, peering over the top of the seats and staring at us like we were aliens. They really were annoying little sh*ts and the parents were almost as bad!!!! We crossed the connecting bridge from Malaysia to Singapore and through immigration which took ages. It was immediately obvious how different this country was to Malaysia- and we welcomed it with open arms! Firstly the people were really helpful and friendly, unlike those we had left behind. One hostel we had been advised to go to had been booked out so spent a while walking around trying to find an alternative before heading out for ... read more
