Memories of a cold Cathedral on New Years Day 1990 I nearly froze when attending New Years Mass on the morning of 1 January 1990 while part of a Grail meeting in a nearby city - I had my Mum's very old fur coat on - but still froze - the poor reps from African countries were even colder - the hot lunch afterwards was great! Love to you both, Fran
Your 'not camping' holiday Have a wonderful time which I'm sure you will. It give me such great pleasure to see you exploring some of the world together and I'm sure it will be such fun listening to all your travellers tales once you get back! Lots of love to you both. M xx
The King's not home! What a great story and, let's face it, it does look like a museum! I love the garden which makes use of the space. You look to be having a wonderful time. M xx
Cologne cathedral A few years ago when we were travelling by train in Europe we stopped at Cologne where we had a few minutes to get out of the train before it finished its journey. So we got to see Cologne cathedral and take a few photos of the outside of it. So thanks for showing me what it's like on the inside. Great photos!! M xx
Vat of chocolate at the factory Lucky you; I bet it tasted wonderful. My Auntie Hilda used to work at the Rowntree Chocolate factory in York many years ago. You were allowed to eat as many chocolates as you liked she told me, but after a week there you couldn't even stand the smell of chocolate!!
Enjoy it all Hi Martha and Phil,
How wonderful to see you wearing the new jumper, Phil.
I would love to visit Leuven one day - many senior staff from the Sydney Catholic Schools have studied there in recent years.
We missed you, Martha, at our latest book group - Love, Fran
Poya in Kandy Hi, I will also be in Kandy on Poya day. I'm glad that it looks like a good idea to visit the gardens on this day as I wasn't sure. What about transport and accommodation on Poya day, do you think it should be booked in advance? Can you remember anything special happening in town on this day?
Many thanks, Lisa x
make me crave to see the natural scenary. Really Martha, you make me crave to see the natural scenary and I feel sad because while I was living there, I could not see those beautiful things by the war. but eventhough the war ended, I could not visits there because of scaring to live there.
Request Tips for Visiting Anuradhapura Nice to read your blog about Anuradhapura. I will be in Colombo this week and intend to go straight to Anuradhapura from the airport. Is it possible to get there before dark if I am arriving Colombo around 10am? Also, how much time do I need to cover the Cultural Triangle? I have one full day for Anuradhapura and half day to visit another site within the Cultural Triangle since I have to return to Colombo in the evening to catch up with a morning flight. Will appreciate to hear from you. Best regards.
Another trip down memory lane, thanks. We have a lovely old lithograph of the bridge and part of the botanical gardens at Peradeniya hanging in our hall. And I've been to the Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya, which I can never remember how to pronounce, and Sam always has to remind me that it's nuraylia. Also, had dinner at the Queens Hotel in Kandy with a journo writing for the travel section of either the New York Times or the Wash Post. Can't remember which, now. Long time ago.
Thank you for sharing Hi Martha and Phil
What a wonderful journey. So much sadness in our hearts preventing us from enjoying our own country of birth! Anyway I've sort of had a trip too following your blog! I've enjoyed reading your blog and seeing the photos. Not sure if the little blurb on the right side of the page on the History of SL comes with the blog site, but it is a bit hmmmmmmmm. Anyway have a lovely time for the rest of your stay. I am looking forward to you coming back to good old OZ and sharing more of your stories.
