I didn't have a blog yesterday as I was under the weather. I started getting a sore throat Tuesday and finally developed into a full blown cold yesterday. Jim took the motor home into have the headlights repaired yesterday. They had to overnight the Master Controller in to the shop. So far, everything is working ok. An expensive repair. Today we went to the Farmer's market again then drove up to a small area north of Fairbanks called Fox. We stopped by America's Most Northern Brewery called Silver Gulch Brewing & Bottling Co. They also have a restaurant there. They usually give tours of the brewery only on Wednesday and Friday, but Levi, the head brewer, was there and gave us a tour. Very informative. They need four ingredients to make beer - barley, water, hops ... read more

This morning Barbara gave Ruth and I a haircut. It is nice to have a beautician in the group. Then we all went to the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. It has some very interesting exhibits there including Otto, the brown bear who is 8'9" and weighs 1,250 lbs. They also have on display Blue Babe, the world's only mummified Ice Age steppe bison mummy. They also have Alaska's largest public display of gold. We saw two movies - one was on the Aurora. This was really fascinating. I would love to see the Aurora but since it doesn't get dark, it's not possible. They say that Fairbanks is a very ideal place to see it. I hear that in the winter and early spring, it is beautiful. We also ... read more

I couldn't get on the internet last night, so will try this morning. We went to Michael's house (Carroll and Barbara's son) yesterday. Carroll and Barbara are staying there while we are in this area. Barbara was in the process of canning salmon and rhubarb. She canned 19 pints of salmon and 18 pints of rhubarb. I am attaching a picture of Jim, Charlie, and Jerry trying to find gold. Carroll built this device made out of wood, plastic tubs, water pump and a piece of plastic drainage tubing cut in half. Carroll and Michael went to a creek bed and dug up several 5-gallon buckets of sand and gravel and brought them home. On the top of the device is a wood trough that has water pipes with water running. The sand and gravel is ... read more

Going to try to type this again. Had it all typed and then lost the internet. Very frustrating. Got up early today. Had to take the motor home in to get the headlights fixed. Unfortuantely, they didn't have the item needed to fix them. Had to order it overnight which means they propably won't get it until Thursday. Hope to get them fixed Friday. Of course, we don't need headlights up here because it doesn't get dark but there are some areas where they have to be turned on all the time. We went to the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum today. Beautiful cars. This collection is owned by one man. There are 84 cars in the collection and 65 on the floor. All but 3 are in running condition and are often used in local parades. ... read more

It was another beautiful day in Alaska. I believe they broke the record for the low here this morning - 38 degrees. We drove to Chena Hot Springs which is about one hour northeast of Fairbanks. The first thing we enjoyed was the Ice Museum. This was built about 7 years ago. It is kept at 22 degrees inside and made out of blocks of ice inside. It has lots of ice sculptures, 4 ice bedrooms (which can be rented for $500 a night) igloo, an ice outhouse and lit by ice chandeliers. Next we enjoyed the natural mineral hot spring rock lake. It felt so good. They said the temperature ranges between 100 and 110 degrees. We then had lunch and then toured the hydroponic greenhouse. This was very interesting. Using water, nutrients and light ... read more

Going to try to type this again. Tried earlier and lost the internet. Yesterday morning we lost our electricity. A small experimental plane malfunctioned and hit the power lines. Thankfully, the pilot was okay. Ruth, Becky, Carolyn and I went to the Farmer's market. They also had Alaskan made arts and crafts. Nice. Was kind of hard to believe that the tomatoes were $5.00 per pound. Then we went to Michael's(Barbara and Carroll's son) house. He smoked some salmon. Very good. Jim, Charlie, Larry and Jerry went on a trip to the Arctic Circle. They flew from Fairbanks to Coldfoot which is 60 miles inside the Arctic Circle. The flight was 160 miles. The return trip on the bus was 265 miles. The plane was a 10 seater. They had 6 people going. Jim said the ... read more

I am going to write this blog again. I had it all typed and lost the internet. I tried last night, but no internet then. Thursday night Scott, Carroll and Barbara's son, brought us huge cinnamon rolls that he had made. He is also the one that cooked our roasts for July 4th. Very good cook. Yesterday morning we got the rock chips filled in our windshield. A guy came to the park to do it. We had 3 rock chips and Charlie had one in his rv and one in his truck. Hopefully, we won't get anymore. We had another beautiful day yesterday. I went shopping with the ladies for quilt material and then we had lunch at a Japanese restaurant where they cook the food in front of you. Very entertaining and good food. ... read more

Well we didn't have any fireworks last night. Guess because it doesn't get dark. We had a beautiful day today. Around 72. Had a little rain this afternoon - saw a rainbow. Charlie, Ruth, Jim and I went north of Fairbanks to see a section of the Alaska Pipeline that is above ground. This pipeline goes from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez. It is 800 miles long and is 48 inches in diameter. It crosses 3 mountain ranges and more than 500 rivers and streams. It was built by Aleyska Pipeline Co. in 1977. It cost $8 billion. It was the largest privately funded construction project at that time. Construction began in March 1975 and ended in May 1977. It has 12 pump stations. First oil moved through in 1977. Throughput peaked in 1988 when 2,000,000 barrels ... read more

Yesterday was a catch of up day. We had light rain. Then it cleared up. I think it does that a lot up here. Did some laundry, cleaning and grocery shopping. Barbara and Carroll's two sons Michael and Scott live here in North Pole. We are having a cook-out here at Michael's house. I came here to use his internet as the internet at the rv park is so slow. Hopefully, I wiil be able to send the pictures of the construction equipment that I tried to send yesterday. Scott cooked boston butt roasts on the grill. Smell so good. Happy 4th of July everyone. It is about 60 degrees now.... read more

We definitely had better roads to travel on today. Guess they put our tax dollars to work. It is so difficult to keep up the roads here because of the freezing and thawing. The ground can freeze up to 5 to 7 feet. I forgot to mention that yesterday was Canada Day, July 1. It has been 145 years since the founding of Canada. Kind of like our July 4. Also we are now 3 hours behind those in Illinois and 4 hours behind those in the Eastern Time Zone. The sun is supposed to rise tomorrow at 3:17 a.m. and set at 12:31 a.m. It really never gets completely dark. We are at North Pole Alaska which is about 10 miles from Fairbanks. Believe we will stay at this rv park about 2 weeks to ... read more
