Barcelona part 2 I awoke the next morning/afternoon in time for lunch with Kyle at a local tapas place near my apartment. We decided to try octopus, which was a little disappointing as it was quite bland. Afterwards we checked out Gaudi's house, casa Batllo, the house of bones, that he designed for the Jujol family. We had audio guides that directed us around each room. Each audio snippet began with some cooky elevator music and then two condescending posh english speakers who described the "beautiful and elegant archways grow as the spectacular curves turn and twist like the wind which represents the glorious and magical linear pathways for the natural world's soul to take a winding journey through the green and blue waves of colour glisten with wonder and amazement through their journey of enlightenment". ... read more

Barcelona began with what I thought would be a very boring 11 hour bus ride, but turned out to be an entertaining adventure. We all piled on the bus at 8am, ableit a little bleary eyed and not quite awake. I knew no one on the coach except Kat and Ben but they were hungover and sleeping up the back so I sat down the front with a few friendly looking girls, Sam, Kelly and Jackie. The "token" American, Kyle, also joined us for a chat. The other girls eventually dropped off to sleep while Kyle and I continued to annoy the sleepers by chatting about various nothings. I have met a handful of people through busabout that I have instantly clicked with, so it was nice to find another kindred spirit who was also on ... read more

Swiss, Lake Como, Monaco, Nice, Avignon Leaving Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland was an adventure in itself as the lack of sleep and extremely windy roads did not mix well and I was most seriously queesy for most of the first 2-3 hours. I moved myself to the front of the bus to avert being sick. Our next country was Italy! Only for a couple of hours, but we srove to Lake Como to drop off a few busabouters and pick up some more. We had only 20 mins in town to have a quick look at the shoreline and grab a sneaky first gelato before getting back on the bus to head to Nice. Before we arrived in Nice qe had to pass through Monaco, which is still its own country while there is still an heir to ... read more

Lauterbrunnen It was like driving into a postcard... Mountains on everyside with waterfalls gently decsending into mist in the breeze, trees and meadows greener than I thought green could get, and the stunningly clear glacial streams running by the side of the road. Lauterbrunnen was far surpassing my expectations and I hadn't even arrived yet! We didn't get there til about 6 and decided to put off the 'family' cook up until the following night as we all knew how hard Switzerland was on the wallet. Our camping accomodation began well as they started by handing out swiss chocolate, always an excellent way to a backpackers heart. I found my room and was a little surprised to see 3 single beds all together! It was bigger than a king size mattress! I was definately hoping I ... read more

Bern I had got a train ticket from Salzburg to Bern to avoid two 10 hour bus trips and a compulsory stop in Paris. I met Jack and Carol at the station in the morning and said hello, before, parting ways as they were in first class and I was in economy. The train was not too packed so I spread out and began to update my blog while intermittently checking for amazing views from my windows. Jack had told me the previous night that the trip was one of the prettiest anywhere in Europe and it definately did not dissapoint! Beautiful snow capped mountains between valleys that were almost too green was a sensational way to begin my day. The mountain lakes that appeared almost out of nowhere where so crystal clear and looked very ... read more

Salzburg I arrived in Salzburg with my friends from Grunau, Jedda and Ebonee. Although it was raining, we decided to make the most of the time we had and head into the old town to see the sights. As we atarted walking into town it poured with rain and we all considered whether it really was a good idea, but luckily the sights of Salzburg town out weighed us getting drenched. Jedda and Eb had not yet tried the sachetorte cake, which is a traditionally Austrian dessert so we began by looking through all of the cafe's for a place to try it. I was almost immediately distracted by a clothes shop which sold almlst exclusively, the beautiful traditional gowns, dirndls. The dresses and corset-like tops are made with intricately embroidered details and the bright colours! ... read more

Grunau, my home away from home and my restful holiday amongst the busy city adventures. It began with a scenic drive through the mountains and valleys which I tried desperately to stay awake (it had been a BIG last night in Vienna and I got very little sleep). Followed by a home cooked lunch of lasagne for lunch! Nevef again will I underestimate the importance and joy that home cooking brings! Our next guide and busdriver had days off so we headed uo the road to check out the archery. We made two teams and I was with Andy (an Aussie from Australia who worked at the hostel), Nathan the kiwi bus driver and Kieron, a fellow passenger. I managed to lose my arrow on the first official target and it ended up across the river ... read more

We began our tour of Vienna through the local markets, Naschmarkt, the food stalls were amazing! So many colours and smells (some delightful, some not so good as this was the only place in town which was a little unkept and dirty). It is definately a place I will be returning to investigate more thorougly! A quick walk through to the centre of town we stopped at the Opera house with some impressive horses on top and also a circus tent on the top of the building which engages the very young Austrians in music and opera at their own level in the hope they will have a love of music going into adulthood. Honestly the Austrians pulled my heartstrings on this one, as you all know I am passionate about engaging children in music.! The ... read more

Cesky Krumlov This town appeared out of the trees as a picturesque storybook place complete with castles and tiny tall white houses with orange tilled roofs. I was already in love before I had walked over the quaint bridge we had to cross to get to our hostel. The hostel actually looked like it belonged to the castle complex, I was pretty excited about our new home for the next 2 nights. It was the last bus tour with Joel, my favourite guide so far and just before he left he told us that the hostel used to be a hospital for lepracy and was actually haunted. As I have already lived in a very old minor's cottage with my own resident ghost this didn't bother me, but some of the others were a little concerned. ... read more

Prague, the fly by night first time around. I only had one night in Prague on my first loop as I come back for 2 nights when I am doing the eastern treks later in September and then I am back for a week in November when I have a latin dancing conference for 4 days. On most of the bus trips on busabout it is all too easy to fall asleep or sometimes I write this blog as we travel almost exclusively on boring tree lined highways and there is not much to see. However the trip from Dresden to Prague was a little different. Coming from Germany, the little outlying towns and houses finally looked like I expected German houses and scenery to look like. Tall houses with steep triangular roofs with shutters and ... read more
