Rome 2 with Anna My last day in Rome, and my last day with Anna began with a delicious breakie and a quick trip into town to drop Anna's bag off at her new hostel. We had booked ourselves onto a Vatican tour at 10am and it started at the bridge of angels. There was so much amazing history, I wont go into too much detail as a lot of it wasn't absorbed. There were a few art works that really amazed me. One is done by Michelangelo called the Pieta and is a statue of a young Madonna holding a deceased Jesus. For a few reasons this doesn't make sense. One, she is not young when Jesus died, two she is far too large (8 foot if she stood up) and three the way she ... read more

Italian Adventure Anna and I organised our delicious breakie of yoghurt, muslie and slice banana ready to have on the bus as it was an early 7:30 start. We weren't the earliest so were left to be the back seat bandits with Dan from Adelaide and then Terry and Alan the only mature age couple joined us up the back. Anna and I cracked out tubs, started munching only to discover that our new guide, Ereni's first rule was "no eating on the bus". Whoops! Haha Big chats and we discovered the 'oldies' were really super cool to hang out with and not afraid of being overun by a busload of about 30 twenty somethings. At our first service stop Terry and Alan met Teagan who decided as they were the 'olds' then we should fully ... read more

Rome I was extremely excited to see the coastline of Italy appear out my window and I think I was even more excited than when I first landed on European soil coming into Manchester airport for my connecting flight to Edinburgh. It was a lot flatter on the coast than I was expecting and I kept looking for a big city to see if I could find Rome. Having no reference point, I couldn't, but I enjoyed my birds eye view of tha Italian coast, a place I had dreamed of visiting since reading an Italian travel journal written by an author in Australia some 3 years earlier. It was the food and the culture that called to me, the sense of family and living from the land. Not that I thought I would find that ... read more

San Sebastian We arrived in the beautiful San Seb, rumoured by many to be heaven on earth, in the rain and the cold. It was a little dis heartening when you arrive at your tropical beach destination and it it cold and miserable. But we walked to our hostel, checked in with my new friends and roomates, Rachael, and the hilarious couple from Newcastle Courtney and Nathan. Our friend Jo was in the room next door on her own. We unpacked and then got ready for pur Pinchos crawl that Haley our busabout guide organised for us. I was evennmore excited at the prospect of catching up with the beautiful Beckie, who I had last seen in Vienna. We had a beauiful greeting on the stairs of the hostel where she looked up and I looked ... read more

Day 6: Granada We awoke, just barely, and got ready at the speed of light so we could duck off for a quick breakie (no eggs on toast, just crossaints and chocolate....not enjoyable at breakie) before climbing the hill that leads up to the Alhumbra which was our destination for today. The tour guide was nice, but the 'whispers' he gave us were a little staticy and his accent was tricky to decipher (even without only 3 hours sleep). He showed us the gardens and palace relaxing areas to begin and the views of the city were just incredible. I took more photos than I absorbed information but the beauty of the gardens, buildings and architecture says more than I can. I only hope my photosndo it any slight justice, it is truely a work of ... read more

Day 4: Lagos to Tarifa to Morocco After a very early breakie we stopped at a service stop for 2nd breakie of bacon and eggs (I am realising now as I am writing this some time later why I put on so much weight in Spain). Another quick toilet stop usual called a 'pee and flee' where our other guide managed to flood the toilet in the girls bathroom and we had to use the mens. Eww. Turned it into a literal "flee". This was our longest day of bus riding and we finally stopped for a late lunch in Tarifa, which is on the bottom end of Spain. It is a cute but quiet town full of tourists that enjoy surfing/kite surfin and any sport involving good winds. We had an hour to explore the ... read more

Day 2: Seville to Lagos Day two in Seville began with a walk through the local art market where I bought some beautiful bougainvillea earings and admired the artwork of such clever people. I love drawing and painting but I am not terribly good at it. We luckily chose one of the most interesting days to see Seville as it was the official celebration of Corpus Christie which is to celebrate the bread being the body of christ. The coming together of so many local children, teenagers, musicians and elderly was a sight to see as there was at least a 100 people in the procession which slowly made its way to the entrance of the local church. There was a giant float which was carried by 15-20 people underneath. You could only see their feet ... read more

Day 1: Madrid to Cordoba to Seville I was excited to meet our guide, Izzy, who I had previously met on the busabout loops in Lauterbrunen and I knew she was heaps of fun. At our first restaurant stop she explained how we were going to be able to order....you HAD to get your elbows on the bar, otherwise you wouldn't get served. She explained some basic Spanish and we were off on our own. I managed a crossaint and tea successfully but when I tried to order a donut, I mistakenly got an orange juice, which was incidently extremly delcious, but not what I had intended. Whoops, Spanish fail, one. Back on the bus for some more Spanish background info...Chuppa chupps in Spanish means "suckie, suckie". Salvador Dahli designed the wrapping on them (cool hey?!). ... read more

Madrid began with a number of hostel dramas, firstly they lost my booking for 2 nights and only confirmed me for one. Then they found my other night, in a different room though. Then there was only 1 key per room and he said someone was already inside. I took my 22kg bag up to the third floor, but there was no one inside! So I walked all they way back down to get a spare key. Opened the door to find dirty linen, used tooth floss and someones used t-shirt, oh and a dirty toilet. Very unhappy. Went back downstairs to discuss changing rooms and the guy started telling me he had managed to keep me in the same room for both nights. Yay. When I started to say something about the state of the ... read more

Valencia began with a great bus ride that was far too early in the morning. Not that it was any earlier than any of the other bus pick ups, but after 5 very full on party days in Barcelona, I really didn't need an 8am bus. Luckily at the first "pee and flee" stop I met Kelly, a fellow teacher from Melbourne who was also staying in Valencia and we also discovered we were touring the Greek Islands together for all of our 16 days! After so many months of single travel (except Spain and the Italian Adventure with Anna) it is so nice to travel with someone you already know, so I was pretty excited to have made a friend already. Having broken two pairs of shoes in Barcelona and knowing these things tend to ... read more
