We got up early. Gracie took the subway to Penn Station and hopped on a train to Rochester, where she will be for the next two weeks. After she left, I took a shower and finished the bit of packing that had to wait until morning, like my laptop and toiletries. I didn't take any pictures for today's blog because I lent her my camera, so I'll just add the first one I took, about two minutes after we first arrived in NYC on April 14. It's a plaque embedded into the sidewalk near Grand Central Station. I called a cab to take me to Grand Central Station to pick up the bus to Newark, but on the way the Moroccan driver talked me into letting him take me to Newark, since he was on his ... read more

Sister Corde called earlier in the week hoping we would be able to see her again before we left town. We arranged to rent a car, and we picked her up at the convent. “Do you like Italian?” asked this little full-blooded Italian woman. “Do I LOOK like I like Italian????” I responded. She correctly took that as a Yes. She gave me directions to place she enjoys, Villaggio’s in Whitestone, and off we went. The aroma of the pizzas baking in the brick oven was enough to make me a believer. I had veal marsala with pasta, Sister had ravioli, and Gracie ordered a bianca pizza made with ricotta, fresh mozzarella, andbasil. Of course, I started inhaling the lunch before remembering the photos, but I did get pics of Gracie’s leftover pizza and our desserts. ... read more

We wanted for years to see the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side, and today was the day. It’s a block or two from the Manhattan side of the Williamsburg Bridge, Delancey Street, and the Bowery. Entry is by guided tour only. We bought our tickets in advance for two tours, and were glad we did because they all sold out. The museum is an actual five-story apartment building at 97 Orchard Street, built in 1863 when the area was German. There was even a German beer garden in the basement at the time, which is currently being restored. Most of the visitors thought the apartments were very small, but they were bigger than I had envisioned. The tour guide said that visitors who have lived in NYC don’t find them particularly small, compared to ... read more

We were meeting my cousin Joan and her daughter Jen in Long Island City, so we started out early and headed in that direction. First, the Isamu Noguchi Museum and Sculpture Garden is a block from the river. Noguchi was a sculptor, landscape architect, and theatrical set designer who lived and worked in LIC. He created the Red Cube in the Financial District, and the Sunken Fountain at Chase Plaza, among other public art. The Noguchi Table (1948), with its distinctive yin-yang design, is still in production today. He also designed stage sets for Martha Graham, George Ballanchine, and others. Noguchi opened his museum in LIC in 1985 as the culmination of his commitment to public art, using a 60-foot tree-of-heaven (ailanthus altissima) as a focal point. When the tree started to die, threatening to fall ... read more

Today was another day of discovery, but first I took some photos of the great little place we rented for our time in NY. It’s near the subway, buses, and shopping, and is not far from the block where I grew up. I highly recommend www.airbnb.com to anyone planning to visit a large city. Previous guests had rated our hosts very highly, so it didn’t feel like a gamble, and it has worked out beautifully. Gracie and I started wandering, and found ourselves in an area with a Middle Eastern vibe. Apparently part of Steinway St is called “Little Egypt,” and the shops and restaurants left no doubt as to the culture of the neighborhood. Storefronts and buildings sported vibrant paint colors and graphics. We passed several hookah bars, and many of the store signs were ... read more

Monday. It finally stopped raining sometime overnight, bringing a cool and cloudy morning. Gracie went to meet up with a friend in Brooklyn, while I decided to walk around downtown. I wandered from 23rdStreet and Broadway to Herald Square, walking up and down the streets. One sight I wasn’t prepared for is a Home Depot housed in a historic building near 5th Avenue on 23rd St. I took some pictures. I’m so used to seeing the big blocky suburban stores that this one looked like a Disney version or something. Last week we saw the Met Life building where I used to work. The last job I had in NY was at the Pan Am building, which is built over Grand Central Station and blocks Park Avenue, so from a distance looks like it sits in ... read more

Gracie and I awoke to a gorgeous warm day and rented a car. We drove to Durham, NH to see roller derby: Rochester NY's Roc Stars vs New Hampshire’s Skate Free or Die. Brianne skates for the Roc Stars, and this would be the first bout I’d see her in. Her skating name is Harriet Beecher Ass, but she’s known to teammates as Beecher. (Her son Kiernan’s “skater” name is Son of a Beecher.) Gracie navigated well, and even sang some of my favorite songs, so the trip went quickly, and we made it to the UNH campus arena in plenty of time. The bout was exciting and frustrating to watch. I was impressed at Brianne’s nerve and physicality; I see how growing up with older brothers prepared her for this sport. I flinched ... read more

Today Gracie took herself to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and, as a die-hard Beatles fan, to Strawberry Fields. I stayed close to the apartment and rested my weary back. Gracie took all the shots you see on today’s blog entry. Captions and explanations are hers. There are a couple of laundromats nearby, so I tossed the clothes into a rolling bag and made my way there. While waiting for the process to finish, I waited outside on a chair and watched the neighborhood characters do their Astoria thang. A few families walked by. Stroller babies either ignored me as if they were my own teenagers, or smiled brightly, secure in the knowledge that they’d get attention—they can always spot a sucker. A large man across the street happily shouted greetings to delivery truck drivers as ... read more

This was our West and East Greenwich Village day. We started at 23rdSt and Madison Ave, at Madison Square Park, just west of the old Met Life building, where I got my first full-time job in 1967 as a Management Trainee. We had to be in college taking 12 credits or more to keep the job, so after work I’d take the subway uptown to Hunter College. Met Life had a very structured workday. Arrival times were staggered, since all 18,000 employees showing up at once would overload the transit system. My hours were something like 7:42 am-4:12 pm with a half hour lunch. Met Life served employees free hot lunches in the basement cafeteria. Management trainees were also given half-day training in insurance once a week. It was a very workable system. At one point, ... read more

As usual, the subway was our starting point. Upon arriving at the 5th Ave station we found some mosaic art I hadn’t seen before. After walking from the Plaza Hotel end of Central Park, we wound up at 42nd Street and the NY Public Library. I showed Gracie the location of my very first real job, across 5th on 39thSt, where there was a 3-floor Woolworth’s that had seven different food counters, from pizza slices to full meals. I started working there a few days after I turned 16 in 1965, once I got my “working papers” out in Flushing somewhere, which was my introduction to NYC bureaucratic systems. My sister took a job at the same Woolworth’s the following year when she turned 16. We worked all of the food counters at one time or ... read more
