We landed in Shanghai at night and the first thing that struck me is how tall and sparkly this city is compared to the other places we’ve been. Skyscrapers everywhere and each one competing for most neon and/or futuristic architecture (but like futuristic more a la Disney theme park than Star Trek futuristic, know what a mean? Think Jetsons). There are still a lot of traditional buildings nestled in between these behemoths and it kind of makes some parts of the city feel like a scene out of Blade Runner (minus the replicants and flying cars). I must confess - I totally had to look that reference up. I just spent the last ten minutes trying to remember if they were mutants or something else...I could not for the life of me figure that out on ... read more

Next in the works was a Yangtze River cruise and we had the minor misfortune to find ourselves on a boat that I can only describe as, well, how do I describe the boat? Hmf. It’s as if you took what would have been considered a modern building circa 1968 Czechoslovakia (only not as fancy), turned it on it’s side and sailed it down river. Our room was so small I could actually place my feet on one wall and touch the opposite. Small sleeping quarters on any boat is to be expected, but this was tiny and I’ll let you judge the décor. It also rained the entire time which added some cool mist effects on the mountains around us, but made excursioning soggy. A) yes, I used my Mickey Mouse rain cape (so at ... read more

Great. Now I want a panda. Sigh. We went to the Panda Breeding and Research Centre in Chengdu. They have a great set-up where you can actually get quite close to the pandas; often they are just a few feet away. The enclosures are surrounded only by a low fence and a small dry moat, which may be more to keep us away from them because the pandas actually hang out in the moats just for kicks. Needless to say there was a lot of “tee heeing” and “they are sooo cutes” being bandied about (but oh my god, check out the pictures...tee hee hee…they are so cute). And, yes, I do absolutely need all 200 photos we took of them. We also headed up to the Golden Summit which is a Buddhist temple on a ... read more

Ah, Springtime. Flowers in bloom, blossoms on the trees and wtf is this white stuff??? Just before leaving Beijing and everywhere in Xian there are whirlwinds of this fluff flying everywhere. The caption of the photo from the newspaper reads “People cover their faces as catkins from willow and poplar trees float in the air in Beijing yesterday. They are warned to wear veils or sunglasses when outside because catkins can cause respiratory problems”. And I thought it was just the smog making our eyes burn, but no, we’re also being attacked by nature. Sniffle, sniffle. Out of necessity I’ve been “liberating” boxes of soft Kleenex from our swankier hotels to keep on hand (oh, my poor nose). As I mentioned in a previous post, we stick out like crazy everywhere we go, and the lovely ... read more

We had a stop at a jade factory and the ladies bought an obscene amount of jewellery but T and me, not being big shoppers, amused ourselves by practicing converting the price of all this stuff from yuan, repeatedly stating “holy crap, that’s as much as a trip” and walking away shaking our heads. To each his own, but my own would opt for airfare to India or a road trip back home rather than a pair of earrings. Well, I say that now, but if someone wants to gift them to me, I’d take the earrings right quick. Shiny things are pretty. Saw part of the Ming Tombs area and walked down the Sacred Path which is a long walkway with statues lining it meant to protect the Ming Emperors’ final resting places. Being a ... read more

I spent the better part of our first day of travel waiting for a plane, on a plane or not sleeping because I was worried about oversleeping to make the plane. We connected in Newark for our long flight (13 HOURS) to Beijing where the gods of airport travel smiled upon me by having one of only a couple of empty seats on the entire plane ending up next to mine. Freaking awesome. There was another passenger on the other aisle seat in my little row of three and we took full advantage of obnoxiously stretching out our stuff (and ourselves) over the extra seat (oh, extra space, you are so awesome, I love you). Even without the extra space, the seats were comfy and the seatback entertainment kept me easily occupied whenever I wasn’t napping. ... read more

...getting ready for the next big trip and almost everything is set. Heading out on a 5 ½ week trip to China, Vietnam and Cambodia! For China (and for the first time ever) I’m actually travelling with a big group (fifteen people) made up of family/friends of the family, including my most regular travel partner, cousin and one of my BFFs, T the fearless. When the others head home, T and I are venturing off into Vietnam and Cambodia on our own for some intrepid adventuring (mind you, the kind of adventuring that includes crawling back to a sweet hotel at the end of the day. I loves me my luxury). I’ve done all the usual prep - made six thousand lists, packed, saw a travel doctor. As for the travel doctor, I made him some ... read more
