Europe October 14th 2017

We arrived safely and happily back home (I heart you, Canada, you polite, clean, glorious creature...mwa mwa mwa). After three weeks packed with touristing, if I had to pick one of these destinations to recommend, which would it be? All had their strengths, so here’s a report card on the basics. Transportation Budapest is a dream to get around. Imminently walkable, clean, safe. Magnificent underground and lots of public transportation options (buses and trams abound). Driving was easy - clearly marked highways and roads in great shape. Use a navigation app, though. If you miss a turn it helps you get back on track. The gas station we went to had full service - noice! Haven’t seen that back home in ages. In Romania, transportation was only ok. The trains we took all left on time, ... read more

The mamas went off to Birgu (a short ferry across the bay from Valletta) and T and I headed out early to visit some megalithic temple complexes on the south side of Malta (sounds far, but wasn’t - about a 30 minute bus ride). Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra temples were built starting in 3600 BC (that’s BEFORE COMMON ERA folks!!!) Older than olden times, even. Older than the great pyramid. Older than Stonehenge. Like, super, super old. Wow! We were rewarded for our early morning arrival by having the place almost to ourselves which was probably a good thing because I full-on nerded out while I was there. “T!!! They used to have dwarf elephants here!”...DWARF ELEPHANTS! Sweet jeebus, that is cool. After the temples, we took in an entertaining movie that had animations to show ... read more

Today we took the public bus to Mdina/Rabat. Mdina is a small fortified baroque “city” that is adjacent to Rabat. The bus was an approximately 30 minute trip and it was packed. I bought a card loaded with 12 bus trips even tough I’m unlikely to use all of them...it was cheaper than buying our bus trips separately and I can always leave the card with any unused trips behind for the next guests in the apartment. Mdina was compact, beautiful and very pleasant to walk around despite the throngs of people. Lots of shade and very breezy (not sure where the wind was coming from because Mdina was surrounded by high walls). We took in an exhibit about the history of the Knights of Malta (a.k.a. Knights Hospitalier; Knights of the Order of St-John) which ... read more

Although we had planned to do a walking tour of Bucharest on our last day there, we’d already seen all the sights listed on the tour so decided to skip it. Instead, Ma and I went for a walk around our neighbourhood including Parcul Cişmigiu. Lovely park with a small lake in the middle..,maybe more of a pond, but big enough for row boats. Super chill with lots of folks sitting around enjoying the scenery. My favourite part of Bucharest was the Village Museum and further afield it was Bran Castle. As lovely as Romania has been, I am looking forward to moving on to Malta. For a change of pace from all these hotels, we rented an apartment in Valetta right in the heart of all the old timey stuff we want to see. Plus, ... read more

We left Braşov behind and headed for Sighisoara about 1.5 hours northwest-ish. Their claim to fame is their meticulously preserved medieval citadel and the house of Vlad Tepes who the town info says was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s character Dracula (Dracula means “son of Dracul”...Vlad’s dad (Vlad Sr.’s) name was Vlad Dracul, so that makes junior...you see where I’m going). Junior did his fair share of impaling, apparently. Our hotel was inside the walls of the citadel and was very quaint. We could drive in to drop off our luggage, but had to park outside the citadel walls (parking is super cheap - 5 RON ($1.61 CAD) for 24hrs. The historic citadel area is extremely compact and we walked up and down every street and saw all the sights, including the room where Vlad Tepes ... read more

One! One castle where Vlad Tepes, who rumour has it Bram Stoker based the character Dracula, stayed! Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh! Two! Two castles where Vlad Tepes, who rumour has it Bram Stoker based the character Dracula, stayed! Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh! The next leg of our journey has us heading into the Carpathian Mountains which are north-ish from Bucharest. We rented a car for this part and are glad we did. Getting out of Bucharest was a little frustrating but not more so than any big city at rush hour. Once out, though, it was smooth sailing to Peles Castle. It’s about 1.5-2 hrs outside Bucharest in the Carpathian Mountains. It was the summer palace of Romanian King Carol and was beautiful but insanely ornate. We started our day with breakfast at what is quickly becoming our favourite spot: Paul. Very popular cafe about a block away from our hotel with magnificent pastries and gorgeous sammiches. Also, the ladies who work there are the friendliest in Bucharest! It’s nice to start your day with a smile (a rare enough commodity that we notice when we get one). Gold star, Paul. You are excellent. My must for Bucharest was the Village Museum (an open air museum with historic homes and structures from different parts of Romania that were relocated to Bucharest and restored). To get there we took a lacklustre HOHO which took us by the Parliament (ridiculously huge) before swinging northward to take us to the museum. The museum was Ah-Mah-Zing. We spent 4 hours there (including lunch at a cafe ... read more

We took an approximately 6hr train ride to Suceava in the Bucovina region to take a tour of the painted monasteries. The countryside was flat farmland for awhile but the further north we got, the more lovely it became. (Suceava is at the very northern part of Romania, closest to Ukraine). I mostly snoozed (my travel super power - I can sleep in any train, plane or automobile) but did wake up momentarily to hear T and my aunt play “Heads Up” (basically you have to make the other person guess something with verbal clues) in the most gloriously awkward fashion. Inaccurate clues and wild guesses were being bandied about with little success. There’s a timer in the game so we’ll chalk it up to game pressure. The only dogs I’ve seen are strays, so of ... read more

Day 6 was a long slog (15 hours) on the train from Budapest to Bucharest. We had tried to figure out about the train, amenities, etc. before we left, but left things a little too late and couldn't get the info we needed about our train by looking online. Like: Is there wifi on the train? (No) Are there plugs to charge your devices (Yes) Is there a dining car? (No) is there a bar (No) and probably the most important one for a 15hr trip - Can you buy food on the train (yes, but you won't know that until after you start thinking maybe there won't be any snacks and you won't be able to have anything until after you arrive at 11pm and by then you'll be "hangry" and that's no fun for ... read more

We rented a car to start Day 4 and headed out to Szentendre (a small artisan town about 45 minutes NWish of Budapest). Travel recommendation #1 from this trip is to download an offline map app. No data needed and it lets you know where your are. You can look up reviews for app options, but T had "Citymaps2go" which was a great little app. It doesn't give directions so I had to have separate turn by turn instructions as well to navigate. Still - it got us back on track when we missed some turns so I am all about these apps now. I downloaded "Maps.me" as it has GPS like T's app AND it can give you directions, so we'll see how that one works out when we get to the driving part in ... read more
