Being a keen traveler, I'm always keen to see new places. And now I'm off to see the countryside of Spain, a long, challenging 800 kilometres of it in fact!

Yes, I'm hiking the Camino Frances, from just inside the France border at St Jean Pied de Port, across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostella.

I am currently at our favourite holiday destination, Singapore Changi Airport. We have a few hours until our flight so there is time for one final blog entry... I thouroughly enjoyed our time, albeit a bit sleep deprived, in Santiago and Barcelona after finishing our walk. On Monday night the large group of people that Angi had come to know during her Camino gathered together in Santiago for final celebration drinks and dinner. Angi appeared to have mixed emotions; she was very happy to see all of the friends she had made on her Camino but was also very sad to be saying goodbye. I went along for the drinks and I knew a few faces but not that many. It is funny how Angi and I ended up meeting completely different people because of the ... read more

On Friday Debbie and I woke up at a reasonable time in Portomarin and met Gib downstairs for some breakfast before heading off. We were the only people in the hotel and it was very quiet! I had firmly decided that I was now going to stay in hotels all the way to Santiago in the hope of avoiding the bugs. Debbie's foot was giving her trouble so I walked in the misty, cold, foggy morning wit Gib, across the scariest bridge I have seen on the Camino. The night before we had crossed a very high bridge into Portomarin, but it was concrete and made for cars, while this one was a foot bridge made of not-so-secure metal plates! I felt very dizzy and had to focus on the horizon to get myself across. We ... read more

Last time I wrote was a week ago, on Monday night, sitting in the living area of the beautiful hostel in Fonfría. I have not been able to use a proper computer for some time! So much has happened.... Very early Tuesday morning I was woken by an interesting situation. I was sharing a room with my new friend Deborah, and I had bandaged my foot too tight so woke up around 2.30am with throbbing toes. I sat up and took off the bandage, then noticed an itch on my shoulder. I rubbed it in the dark, feeling a small soft ball rubbing under my fingertips. A bit of fluff I thought. Then I had another itch, and another ball under my fingertips. So I went to our bathroom, turned on the light and took off ... read more

On Saturday I woke up at 6.30am, keen to make an early start so I didn´t miss out on a bed! My mantra has now turned into ¨step your foot ahead, and you will get a bed!¨. The road is getting a bit busier now, as more people start walking in the hope of obtaining their ¨compostella¨, obtainable by walking the last 100km into Santiago. At least it is now the off season, going into winter, which reduces the number of people. I started walking at 7.30am after an in-house breakfast, with a canadian couple who set a slightly faster pace and always aimed to get to their destination by 2pm to avoid the hottest part of the day. That sounded perfect to me! It´s funny what I learn from different people along the way. We ... read more

On Wednesday (7.10.09) we woke up in the monastary in León at 5.45am as everyone was getting up early! No chance of a sleep in. I stayed in bed as long as possible, the only motivation for getting up being the 7am breakfast. It was raining lightly and we prepared ourselves for that, but soon enough came the thunder and heavy rain! We had meant to have a look around town, at the cathedral and so on but it was so rainy that Angi decided to get walking. I was planning a rest day so we said goodbye, hopefully to catch up with each other soon enough. I found a café and hung out there until the rain eased, before going for a look around town. The cathedral was impressive; the highest roof I´ve seen yet, ... read more

On Saturday (3.10.09) we woke up late (7.30am) in our green oasis hostel in Boadilla. No one in our entire 20-odd bed room had set an alarm! We missed the 7am breakfast but the owner was nice enough to sell us a giant coffee (in a bowl again!) and cake. We got walking around 9am in the thick mist, now well and truly in the flat Mesata plains, the biggest hill being about 10m high. The mist made for some great photos and we followed a famous Canal, Canal de Castilla, for a fair way into Fromista. There were hundreds of perfect, dew covered spiderwebs on all the small bushes along the side of our road. We got into Fromista just as the sun came out, around lunch time, where I stopped for food and Angi ... read more

On Wednesday we woke up around 8am, a sleep in for us, after a good night´s rest in the Burgos hotel. We packed up, checked out of the hotel and ventured out to meet up with Sarah who had caught up, to go together to see the Burgos cathedral. It was huge and very impressive! Angi then had a few chores to do around Burgos so she left me waiting at a cafe, writing in my diary, drinking coffee, trying to read the Spanish newspaper and watching as all the workers came in for lunch at 2pm. Angi came back after 3 hours... I had doubts as to whether we would actually get hiking! But we decided to go on, just 12km to Rabe, to make the next day shorter, instead of taking a rest day. ... read more

On Sunday we were quite sad to leave the lovely hostel in Santo Domingo, so we left a bit later than usual. It was only 24km (this, incredibly, is now a relatively small distance) to Belorado so we weren´t concerned about hurrying. It was also foggy all morning so it was great walking weather. The road was good; a flat dirt road for most of the day. Unfortunatly the land was very flat with few trees so we had to make a couple of detours for toilet stops! I think we concerned a few people the first time, when we had to walk around 200m off the beaten track; or maybe we made them think that there was something up that side road that they were missing out on. So much information on the Camino is ... read more

And so a bit more about coming into Logroño on Thursday.... As I mentioned, I chose to catch the bus the last 9km into Logroño. It was a funny experience.. the bus was due at 3.07pm and at 3.30 it still hadn´t come. However by now we have realised there is such a thing as "spanish time" over here. The spanish don´t seem to be worried about time as much as us aussies; within 45 minutes of a stated time is more than acceptable. The bus was air conditioned, and as it drove along I gazed out the window at the walking pilgrims, in the hot sun, and couldn´t help but smile! Grin in fact! The fiesta in Logroño that night was great; there were lots of buskers and music, and loads of people! The lolly ... read more

And finally we have internet! The last few albergues (hostels) have either had extremely slow internet or one computer that everyone wanted to use. So... much has happened since the last post! On Monday we slept in Pamplona, in a decent hostel. Angi, Sarah and I got up at 7am and weren't concerned about rushing as the post office didn't open till 8.30am. Once we were ready we headed straight there, and 20 minutes later were 3.9kg lighter! Fantastic! In high spirits we found some great coffee and set off to hike 21km. We walked all the way through Pamplona into the nearby fields and started heading for the hills. We could see modern windmill-farms in the distance and the road was decent, muddy and rocky sometimes but ok. We climbed up and up, heading towards ... read more
