Varanasi, for some unknown but pleasantly surprising reason, has an office at the train station for foreign tourists to be able to buy tickets. After everywhere else in India, it was a real relief! Even better, there was space for one of us on the train, and we decided that was enough for the both of us. One of us was on the waiting list, but that didn't matter. So we booked our tickets and a flight from Calcutta to Kuala Lumpur. We turned up to the train station an hour beforehand for the train and were told it was running four hours late!
