21st-23rd December We arrived in Langkawe at around 5pm and took a taxi to a hostel which was full. We spent the following hour and a half looking for somewhere; James on foot, me on bags with the laptop attracting many an interested stare. It was pitch black by the time James returned with the good news that he had found somewhere affordable. After checking in and pitching the mosquito net we went out in search of food. I mistook ‘taufu’ (a method of cooking) with ‘tofu’ (a meat substitute) and ended up with a chicken hot plate. I ate the rice and the sauce. James’ food was slightly better but nothing special. This was washed down with mediocre Thai beer with dirt in it. The following morning we were up and ready to leave at ... read more

20 November - 21 December Nong Khai From the bus station in Vientiane, we took a bus over the natural border of the Mekong River, to the humble town of Nong Khai. The crossing was relatively smooth and happily it was free. Apparently South East Asian immigration officials have not yet caught on to the trend of charging extortionate and ambiguous fees to defenseless tourists like their Latin American counterparts do so proficiently. We used our ‘saved’ baht to buy ourselves two delicious Pad Thai’s and a rather disappointing Singha beer. We spent the remainder of the afternoon walking the considerable length of Thailand’s version of the Mekong promenade, unsurprisingly more impressive, and checking out Nong Khai’s market. It turned out our guest house was situated in the middle of nowhere, and thus, a long search ... read more

12th - 20th November Luang Prabang We landed in the car park sized airport of Luang Prabang in our little twin prop into a dusky evening. We obtained our visas with ease at the attached room which sufficed as an airport in this small town which happens to be the second most important ‘city’ in Laos. We were then met by Psan, our guide, and driven to our hotel and there our weeks holiday began. Mum and Dad were waiting in the hotel lobby and we were soon settled and drinking decent wine and eating dinner and attempting to catch up on the past year. The following morning, after experiencing the wonders (for budget travellers like us) of a buffet breakfast, we met Psan and discussed the plans for the following days. We then had the ... read more

23rd October - 11th November Ho Chi Min City aka Saigon Our Vietnam experience began dramatically as our plane came in to land in a thunderstorm. All we could see through the windows was the white light of lightning reflected against the surrounding cloud. Our hearts started beating considerably faster as the plane touched down for a second before taking off again. We were left in the dark, or rather flashing light, as to why for the proceeding twenty minutes or so. Dad later explained that this is the pilots ‘code’ as it were; ‘aviate, navigate, then communicate’. I won’t pretend that thoughts of hijack were not consuming my mind during that period. The entire plane erupted in applause when we eventually landed. It took an hour or so to get visas and soon we were ... read more

Bali 1st October - 23rd October We only had 23 days to see this immense country, inconveniently divided up by huge expanses of water which seriously disturbs travel plans. Still, it makes for a good deal of beauty and diversity. Our first stop was Legian in Bali which was admittedly my second trip in as many years. We were kindly put up by Anna, Chiara’s mum and this time, due to the addition of boyfriend, I had the honour of sleeping in Chiara’s room. We were very grateful to finally arrive at midnight (Anna had planned to meet us at the airport at 9pm) and sip cold Campari soda with our host. It had been a long and strenuous journey not made any easier by the fact that I couldn’t find the house. We spent the ... read more

1st Septembet - 1st October The first leg: Sydney to Airlie Beach Australia, the expansive country that surpassed all expectations with its diversity and natural beauty, enthralled us. The adventure started in Sydney on a double decker train which took us from the airport to our delightful hostel-come-student accommodation in a pleasant leafy suburb. We spent three days sightseeing Sydney on travel cards that enabled us to travel by double decker train, bus and ferry. As well as the Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Bondi Beach (in the rain) we also took in some of the Sydney nightlife in a local pub with some friends of Miles’ (James’ brother) and discussed the delights of Asia from where they had recently come and which we are soon to uncover. The following day we had a rude ... read more

Nueva Zealanda, as we couldn’t help thinking of it on arrival, took a while to adjust to. It was good week until we managed to shrug off the automatic ‘Hola,’ and relax into the ease of thinking in our own native tongue. Now, I fear, much of our Spanish is already lost. The North Island The flight was long, uncomfortable and predominantly sleepless and on arrival at the hostel (5am) we could not get in. There was no door bell. A trip down to the internet cafe and a skype call later, we were admitted into a dingy hostel and an even dingier room which housed a long term resident. The room had a distinctive smell James likened to that of a man who had been sleeping on his own too long and was littered with ... read more

We arrived in Santiago around 8am and took the metro to Republica where our guide book suggested some cheaper hostels. These were not to be found, either having closed down or apparently never having existed. After about half an hour of walking with heavy bags we gave up at a ‘residencial’ in the style of a typical English old fashioned B+B. This cost us about $45 a night and didn’t even come with the latter ‘b’. We spent the remainder of the day scouting out ways to get to El Colorado, a nearby ski resort where we would spend my birthday. El Colorado At 8am the next morning we were collected by a minibus which took us to our hotel in El Fallerones near El Colorado. It was a nice hotel, quaint and a bit dated ... read more

As I mentioned, the start of our journey into Argentina was something of a nightmare. A taxi took the two Irish guys, James and I to the bus terminal. It was there we incurred our first proper theft; a small invaluable bag to any thief but very valuable to us. It contained my mate gourd (an early birthday present) and 8 months of knitting work. Typical, 9 months travelling in impoverished and developing countries and we have no problems, we set foot in the relatively prosperous and developed Argentina and incur our first proper theft. The walls inside and surrounding the bus terminal were propped up with bags, bundles of material, people and dogs. We searched and searched in vain for several hours before giving in to the dismal situation of a 5 hour wait outside ... read more

Copacabana y Isla del Sol We arrived in pleasant but touristy Copacabana in the early afternoon and found a great hostel with a beautiful lake facing room for under $10 before treating ourselves to a decent meal and a delicious glass of vino tinto to celebrate our arrival into wine country at long last. We were awoken with a knock at the door the following day and it wasn’t until we’d leisurely got ourselves up and ready for breakfast that we discovered that Bolivia is an hour ahead of Peru and thus we were about to miss our boat to Isla del Sol. Hurriedly we shoved our belongings into various bags leaving most at the hostel, only taking our disorganised day packs with us to the island for our overnight stay, and ran to the dock ... read more
