I'm off on my Grand European Adventure!

Europe » Italy » Campania » Naples May 22nd 2011

We are going to the First Communion of the son of one of Ms. Pam’s teaching friends. I’ve never been to one of these before but apparently it’s a big deal. Long drive to the church where it’s at. We’ve left the big city of Naples (or Napoli, as the natives call it.) and are travelling through the Italian countryside and a number of small towns. When I pictured Europe in my head before this trip, I pictured something like this. The Catholic Church here is decently sized and very, very well decorated on the inside. The lamps on the walls all have multicolored glass flowers in them. The entire service is in Italian, so I can’t really follow along, however I do recognize a few words like ‘Padre.’ Awwww! All of the little children are ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Pompei May 21st 2011

I have slept for 12 hours, I feel much better! Honey Nut Cheerios for breakfast, a taste of home. We drive to Pompeii, it’s only about 45 minutes away. As I am now awake, I notice more about Italy as we are driving. The houses tend to be two or more stories tall. The cars are small, apparently a side effect of the high price of gas. Part of this is from the taxes on the gas. I saw an Italian Pine, and Pliny was right, it does look like a mushroom cloud. We park at the back of a restaurant and walk to the site, passing a group of multilingual street vendors. I try not to make eye contact. We are at Pompeii! I have wanted to be here since elementary school, an interest which ... read more

House tour! It’s a really nice house. Must stay awake until 8 pm, a surprisingly difficult task. But I have to stay awake to set my sleep schedule correctly. The irony of me wanting to go to bed early, but being forced to stay awake is likely humorous to my parents. Every time I sit in front of the television, I can feel my eyelids drooping. I might have taken a short nap. Ashley’s dad keeps feeding me to candy to help me stay awake. We walk down a block or two to a store where we buy mozzarella cheese, salami and bread. We watch Dr. Who, it is enjoyable and engaging. I don’t fall asleep. Somebody on the show makes a joke about setting a volcano alarm. It’s fitting because we are going to Pompeii ... read more

Set off from DFW, I think my parents are more worried about this trip than I am. Found free Wi-Fi and updated my Facebook status and ate a sandwich. Wait, wait, wait. Bonus! Apparently U.S. Airways offers Wi-Fi during flight. I wonder how they can connect to the interwebs in the air though… Nice lady sitting next to me is also headed to Italy, but Florence not Naples. Said I was perky and apparently this being my first international flight is a perfectly valid explanation for that. Not gonna lie, the take off is my favorite part of the flight; it feels like a roller coaster. I also like looking out the window as everything gets smaller and smaller, like a train miniature. Eventually fields and forests look like a patchwork quilt with embroidered rivers. Supposedly ... read more
