John Williams
Lamplighter
John Williams
Hello, my name is John Williams and I am 25 years old. I graduated college in May 2007 from Black Hills State University with degrees in Management and Entrepreneurship. Throughout my college career I ran track and cross country for the school and was involved in Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) and the Jacket Investment Club. I am from Spearfish, South Dakota, USA, which is a beautiful, small town in the Black Hills of Western South Dakota, near Mount Rushmore (The famous Presidential Heads).
My latest blogs were about my backpacking trip through Europe which took place in the Fall of 2007. I bought a rail pass and had access to the train system for 3 months so I got to see a lot of Europe. You can also look back to my previous blogs from last year where I rode my tall bike through South East Asia visiting the countries of Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.
This blog has the name "Lamplighter" because that is what I call my tall bike. One of the first uses for tall bikes was to literally light street lamps. In the late 1800s, Lamplighters would ride custom tall bikes from lamp pole to lamp pole, lighting each lamp along the way. In some old European towns, Lamplighters still exist, although they complete their tasks without the use of a tall bike.
I am new to blogging, so any comments or suggestions are appreciated. Hopefully through reading this, some of you will become inspired to plan your own unique adventure. Happy Traveling!
