The day started at the Moon Marble Company Store. Not a lot to see here other than a ton of marbles of all colors and sizes. They also sell a bunch of other junk that your kids will want you to buy. The cool thing is that they have a Marble artist demonstrate how to make a marble. TRUCKHENGE Well I'm not so sure it's really a Henge... to me a henge is a grouping of objects displayed in a circular fashion. A henge should also have objects placed horizontally between two or more vertical objects. to me this is an artistic display of objects. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Truckhenge and I think it is very well done, I just wouldn't use the word Henge. S... read more

My luck is still holding, the first museum I went to, The Corn Cob Pipe Museum was closed. Yes, not only is there a Corn Cob Pipe Museum, But I did try to go there. It wasn't a big deal that the Pipe Museum was closed, it was along the way to my next stop, Auto World Museum. Auto World is a cool little Museum with about 80 automobiles ranging from 1903 through 1987. The cars were originally the private collection of Bill Backer the owner of a local potato chip company who eventually decided to share his collection with the public. Somehow when I visit these museums there is always some connection to home. This 1932 Franklin was built in Syracuse, NY. After Auto World it was a short dri... read more

There are two types of Museums, ones that are open on weekends and ones that are closed on weekends. On weekends I tend to be near the ones that are closed. That was the case this morning. So instead of going to the two museums I wanted to visit, I went to some roadside attractions that never close. Only two V-1 German Buzz-Bombs exist in the United States, One is at the Smithsonian, the other is in Greencastle, IN. The V-1 was nicknamed the Buzz-Bomb because of the noise they made as they flew over European cities. A few years ago my Dad said something to me about the noise of the rockets that he heard fly over London. I always assumed he was talking about the V-2s But maybe he was hearing some V-1s. ... read more

I was planning on leaving early (Friday night), That didn't happen. Then I figured I could get an early start on Saturday, Nope, didn't happen. My goal was to get to Indianapolis before the restaurant I wanted to eat at closed at 10 pm, That's right, didn't happen. Along the way I had a deer run in front of me on I-90 in North West PA, close call but no contact. I found about 30 minutes of stand still traffic in Dayton, OH. I stopped at a Days Inn at 9:30 pm. It took till 10:15 to get checked in, The desk clerk kept complaining about all the paperwork she has to do to check in each customer, but it was no more than any other Hotel. She was just slow. After all that waiting, a ... read more

What was supposed to be a quick stop at the Pen turned into about 2 1/2 hours. But it was well worth it. In my travels I've stopped at three prison museums and two other prison tours. This was by far the best of them. I normally don't like guided tours, and this one was slow at times, but the guide did provide a lot of interesting information and history of the facility. She didn't seem to shy away from the gory details of the violent incidents that occurred here. Considering this was the site of one of the largest prison riots in US history, she had no shortage of stories. Since the prison closed this has also become the site of an annual Mock Prison Riot, a 4 day training exercise for law enforcement. ... read more

I was able to safely circumvent The Cincinnati Triangle today. For those not familiar with this phenomenon, It is the area Between Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton where mysterious things happen. Mr. Carlson claims that this is caused by having a triangular area formed by 3 cities that start with the letter C, The 3rd letter in the alphabet. It is a proven fact that many things have been trapped like a Flytrap within this area and never seen again. The list includes bicycles, cars, airplanes, Gary Sandy's carrier, several Navy ships and a pig. There have also been several medical phenomenon associated with this area including an elevated Fever which doctors can't seem to cure although a mixture of Herb in a shot of Bailey's has proven to be helpful more or Les according to News ... read more

Today started at the USS Alabama in Mobile, AL. I've been here before, but it's been close to ten years. Not much has changed with the ships, but they have opened an aircraft hanger and filled it with quite a few planes. I spent most of my morning here wandering around and exploring the ships. After I left Mobile I took a nice long drive North along the Eastern edge of Mississippi. It was a nice slow drive, no interstates, no traffic. Just a nice drive in 80 degree weather. I tell ya, If you want real Memphis BBQ, you need to go to Mississippi. The Memphis BBQ Company is about ten miles outside of Memphis, but it's the real deal. They have won over 10 world championsh... read more

I started the day heading to the Navy Aviation Museum. I figured a Wednesday would be a quiet time to visit the museum. Man was I ever wrong. When I arrived all the parking lots were closed cars were parked all over the side of the roads. I was ready to turn around and head somewhere else. After all, I've been here before, this is a repeat visit. So I drove past the place found a turnaround and as I approached from the other direction, people were leaving and they were opening one of the lots. It turns out the Blue Angels had just finished an air show. So I was able to get a decent parking spot.First thing that struck me when I walked in was how much room there was. I remembered this museum ... read more

My day started at the National Towing and Recovery Museum in Chattanooga, TN. Not a bad little museum. But as the only visitor at the time, I was outnumbered by employees. But hey, if your into Tow Trucks, This is the place for you. Of course I have to travel to Tennessee to find a Tow Truck from Binghamton. Then the long drive to southern Alabama. Dinner tonight was another strikeout. I figured Streets Seafood and Restaurant was going to be a safe bet, but I knew I was in trouble when the lettuce on the salad bar was browner than my lawn back home. I ordered a combo platter Catfish and Crab cakes. The Catfish wasn't bad, but the crab cake was like fried crab mush patties. ... read more
