Lesson Learned: My amateur pictures do not do a school justice. Rely on college/university websites for pictures. Note to Students: Do consider taking a picture of yourself on campus for your application packet. Include this picture with a clever caption or story about your experience on the campus. Dear All, Thank you for subscribing to my “Travel Blog”. Twenty-five schools in ten days and approximately 2000 miles on the road allows for only a quick survey of schools. Your tour of schools need not go at such a fast clip once you identify the kinds of schools of interest to you. My goals were 1) to promote Christ School to college/university admissions offices in the northeast, 2) to develop stronger working relationships with admissions personnel who review our Christ School student files and 3) to learn more about schools which might be good matches for Christ Schoo [View Full Entry]

Dear All, On this last day of the tour, I returned to Pennsylvania on my way home, and toured Bucknell and Susquehanna. BUCKNELL UNIVERSITY Student Body Population--3500 Classroom Performance 93% in top quarter of high school class Mid 50% Test Scores (if required) 1230-1400 % Out of State 77% % Male 50% This beautiful, well maintained campus reminded me of Wake Forest in its architecture, its students and its objectives. I met with Carol Gadd, associate director of Bucknell’s admissions office, prior to the 8:30 am information session, and then joined part of the ca [View Full Entry]

Dear All, Tours of Wesleyan University, Trinity and the United States Military Academy follow… WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY Student Body Population--2800 Classroom Performance 78% had a 3.5 or higher Mid 50% Test Scores (if required) 1300-1490 % Out of State 92% % Male 49% I arrived to the campus early and enjoyed a hot breakfast in the school’s dining hall. I was particularly excited to see Wesleyan because of its strong academic reputation. Our tour guide described the school as “mellow”, “open”. I would add that it seems to attract an eclectic g [View Full Entry]

Dear All, A gps will take you only so far before one needs to turn on one’s brain and navigate a little further. Such was the case as I drove within a few blocks of Michell College's campus and my gps system said I was there. I was not, but I eventually did get there on time. The lesson has been learned—never rely solely on technology. All three schools visited today are located in the town of New London. MITCHELL COLLEGE Mitchell College is a four year college which has both a post graduate high school program (Thames Academy), and a [View Full Entry]

Dear All, There are so many schools in the Worcester, Massachussetts area. I was able to drive through two (Clark University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute) before heading to my first visit, College of the Holy Cross. Website pictures did not deceive me; Holy Cross’ campus is as pretty as advertised. I encourage you to visit. COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS If you have time before or after an admissions office visit, I encourage you to connect with a professor, coach or other person of interest at a school where you may have a specific interest. Call, in advance, if you can. [View Full Entry]

Dear All, Following a weekend as a tourist in Newport, Rhode Island, I drove 30 miles down the road to see Brown and Rhode Island School of Art and Design. The two campuses are within a block of each other and have reciprocal agreements with each other where students from one school can take students at the other school. BROWN Give yourself plenty of time to get to this school. There is no public parking lot. It is everyone for him/herself when it comes to on street parking. Be aware, too, that sometimes information sessions are held somewhere other than the [View Full Entry]

Dear All, After a busy week of touring schools, I have found it wise, while on the road, to do something totally unrelated to college. On this trip, I researched and planned to see a few Broadway plays. I encourage you and your son to do the same when you are on the road so that you not only pace yourself through the college visits, but also have some fun. Over the years, colleagues of mine have combined their college visits with concerts, professional baseball games and even barbecue restaurants. NEW YORK UNIVERSITY This truly is an urban campus. Iona College

Dear All, I am staying in one of Iona College’s dormitories tonight and tomorrow. Some schools allow high school counselors to stay in a dorm, a guest house, a Bed and Breakfast or a hotel at their expense and as a professional courtesy. My day began with an information session and tour of Iona, a 35 acre campus located just 20 miles from New York City. From the Information Session and tour, I learned this small school does a good job of nurturing its students. My tour guides confirmed this. Both tour guides said if you miss your morning class, you [View Full Entry]

Dear All, Lessons Learned: GPS systems are not always accurate. Traffic in big cities may delay estimated time between schools. Plan on visiting no more than two schools in one day. Having said this, I did make it to all three schools today, but it was an adventure! Haverford was not a part of my satellite mapping system. My notes for University of Pennsylvania, Swarthmore and Haverford follow in short form. UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA www.upenn.edu Information Session This urban campus located in the heart of Philadelphia is a safe and BEAUTIFUL campus. The campus i [View Full Entry]
