Dear All,
After a busy week of touring schools, I have found it wise, while on the road, to do something totally unrelated to college. On this trip, I researched and planned to see a few Broadway plays. I encourage you and your son to do the same when you are on the road so that you not only pace yourself through the college visits, but also have some fun. Over the years, colleagues of mine have combined their college visits with concerts, professional baseball games and even barbecue restaurants.
NEW YORK UNIVERSITY
This truly is an urban campus. School buildings are distinguished from other buildings by the purple NYU flags which adorn all school buildings. Similar to Columbia, I discovered students, here, are passionate about learning, are active in the community and are most definitely self-starters.
Information Session and Tour
23% acceptance rate. Roughly two out of every ten students who apply are accepted.
Of the 20,000 students, students come from 120 different countries and 50 states
NYU has eight colleges. You may apply to any one of the eight. If you wish to transfer to one school once accepted, the admissions officer said they

cannot guarantee that you will be able to transfer to another one of their seven colleges.
Their eight schools include: Arts and Sciences, Business, Tisch School of Performing Arts, School of Education, Nursing, Social Work, Gallatin School, School for Hotel and Sports Management, Liberal Studies Program. This latter program is a two year program
and with attainment of specific grades, students can matriculate into the university.
Their school for the performing arts is particularly strong and difficult to get into. I noticed in the playbill tonight (for Wicked), that one of the main actors graduated from this program. Another recent high school graduate who performed in August O Sage County (on Broadway) will be a freshman at NYU and, I am sure, a student in the Tisch program.
Average class size is 25-30
There are over 300 student run clubs.
There are 22 residence halls in the surrounding neighborhoods.
There are 10 cafeterias on campus.
The school is generous with its money for students who wish to extend their educational experience. In the School of Arts and Sciences, I was told that $3 million is set aside for such purposes.
81% of the students will do three or more internships before they graduate.
91% of the students graduate in 5 years.
Room, board and tuition approaches $50,000/ year. Scholarships ranged from $1,000 to $25,000; no full scholarships given.
Students may recall the Olson twins went to NYU.
On Monday, I will report to you from Providence, Rhode Island where I will visit Brown, Rhode Island School of Art and Design and the International School of Yacht Restoration.
Until then, hope you all enjoy a great weekend!
