We have decided to take a well earned break from all our hard work and so are off to the beach! Got the first bus at nine in the morning to go to Guayaquil via Cajas National Park. It looks really beautiful and we are going to have to get there at some point. Probably not that soon though as the torrential rain of the last few days had caused a landslide. Really quite scary creeping round mountain passes through tonnes of mud next to the edge of the cliff where the barrier had been swept away - not the most reassuring thing in the world! Anyway, got to Guayaquil which was horribly humid and overall didn't look like somewhere we want to visit in a hurry. Didn't manage to get on a bus to ... read more

Managed to get up and out of bed in good time despite the cold. Amazingly the broken bed had held - I think we all have a new calling in life! Despite the good start we got stuck in a nearby cafe having breakfast so we didn´t actually make it to the site until 11.am. Managed to wangle our way inside for half price thanks to our lovely international student cards! (Honestly, because $6 is far too much to pay for anything - don´t know how I´m going to cope with English prices once I get home!) We went to the museum first and them onto the site where a guide did try to attach herself to us. No point having one really as the museum pretty much said no-one really knows what Ingapirca is ... read more

We have every Friday afternoon off work (believe me, we need it) so we decided to go to Ingapirca straight after school as there was only one bus that left at 1.00pm. Six of us managed to get to the bus terminal on time, unfortunatley Bel was late yet again and missed the bus! We got a phone call from her halfway through the journey and managed to persuade her to try a roundabout route via Cañar to try and meet us there. Not something I´d fancy doing but she does have enough Spanish to do it (probably anyway!) We arrived at Ingapirca to find ourselves dumped right outside the site so we had to walk the kilometre back into the village to find a hostel. Trusting the Lonely Planet as always we ended up at ... read more

First day of work today and Louisa and I actually managed to walk there without a) getting totally lost or b) being incredibly late. A pretty good start if I do say so myself! We´re working at Adinea, a school for disabled kids, in the mornings and at an orphanage in the afternoons. School´s ok but can get a little boring as there is already a university student, Maro, on work experience there so there isn´t a whole lot to do. Me and Louisa are in different classes, I´m with Greta who is incredibly vague. At break the teachers just wander around the playground talking to each other while we are left to break up the very frequent and really quite brutal fights. The kids are gorgeous but so physical whether it´s hugging you or hitting ... read more

Not quite as I´ve been here since Wednesday but a belated welcome anyway. We got on a bus at 5.00am in Quito. Me and the Sophies ad the bright idea of not going to bed the night before so we stayed out until the salsa clubs closed at four. Good idea in the end as I slept pretty much the whole eleven hours down to Cuenca. Not looking forward to doing that again in a hurry! Me and Louisa moved in with our family on Wednesday - they are very nice but refuse to speak a word of English even though they can. I think they are under a slight misapprehension about what GAP is. We are out here to work with kids and incidently might need to know some Spanish - they think we are ... read more

We woke up bright and early for another visit to the Embassy this morning. This time, it turned out we were going to the GAP offices in Quito for various stuff. Unfortunately Rossy only speaks Spanish so a lot of it went over my head and the stuff I did get seemed to be aimed at those staying in Quito. Never mind. We had to give in more documents including our passports which are going to be posted (!) down to Cuenca in five days time. Really not happy about that especially after hearing how terrible the postal system is here. Still, after that I managed to find a book shop were I bought a phrase book and some of the others bought Harry Potter in Spanish. I´m yet to find a real English book shop ... read more

I think today was some kind of record for the three of us in that we actually managed to be at the British Embassy dead on ten and we were the first ones there! In fact we were the only ones there for quite a while - it seem the others had been informed of a change of plans and knew we were now supposed to meet at eleven but no-one had managed to get the message to us. Typical really! Anyway, the elusive Rossy finally turned up only to leave us with a tour guide straight away who was taking us around Quito for the morning. Good to know Rossy exists finally even if her visits are rather fleeting. We also were met by Rio and Annie, two GAPpers who have just finished their placments ... read more

Well, we have a free day today before we have to start running round the Embassy tomorrow. The plan to go to Mindo fell through as some had to be at the airport to meet Georgia and Ben, the last two GAPpers who weren´t doing the Spanish course. We decided instead to go to Quito zoo which, just to confuse us is not in Quito but is situated Guallybamba, about an hours drive away. First, however, we had to stop off at the Hilton to pick up Sophie´s travel pillow which had been brought halfway across the world by a kindly neighbour who was heading out to Ecuador after she left it behind. Really quite random. We set off on the instructions of a policeman which turned out to be the wrong way. Next some woman ... read more

We´d agreed to meet the others at Starnet at 9.30 with the intention of going to Cotapaxi for the day. However, after talking it over the previous night with Silvie and Lorena and consulting the Lonely Planet it wasn´t actually feasible to do as a day trip so we will have to save that for next time we´re up in Quito. We were only half an hour late meeting the others (which is on time by Ecuadorian standards anyway) to find they´d already moved on to the Coffee Tree to have breakfast. We actually had a good reason for being late as we were making Belinda a card using all our school equipment - knew it would come in handy! Bel stayed at home as it was her birthday and she was expecting a call from ... read more

Quite predictably I was not awake for school today. However we managed to be reasonably on time (meaning that my teacher was even later so I could pretend I´d been there for ages!) Did the past tense finally - kind of need it to have a conversation - and then went out to a fruit market in order to ´practise my Spanish´. I got some interesting fruit anyway - basically bought anything I didn´t recognise and Carlos couldn´t translate! In all seriousness I did manage a conversation about the English school system and differences between countries. Actually just turned into me complaining about England! Seems weird that I´ve already been here two weeks and very scary that all my Spanish lessons are over! Hopefully it will seriously improve with practise. Had lunch then met up with ... read more
