** Again putting this post as 6th March so it fits under the South America blogs - its actually 20th Jan 2018 ** Follow on instagram k8e37 for photos of the trip whilst we are away and for prep photos! Quick update regarding jabs, all is good from the yellow fever *touch wood* so far and I'm 10 days after having it so only another 4 to go until I'm clear of any apparent side effects. I would say that around day 5 I did feel pretty tired and as if I was coming down with anything but I felt better after some rest and apart from a bit of a funny throat I'm all good. So rabies... I still haven't had jab number two. Had to phone up Boots on Tuesday to check they had ... read more

*******Edit - Just for ref this blog was written on 13th Jan 2018. I had to mark it as 6th March so it would fall under the South America "Trip" otherwise it wouldn't be linked****** Follow on instagram k8e37 for photos of the trip whilst we are away and for prep photos! Here we are again just under two months out from another fantastic trip. This time we are heading to South America, visiting Brazil, Peru & Argentina. Hotels are reserved, flights have been booked for a few months and we are now in the final planning stages so thought it was the best time to start the blog as things are ramping up! I'll put our itinerary on another blog post so everything is altogether but the gist of the trip is London Heathrow to ... read more

North America » Canada » Ontario » Niagara Falls May 25th 2016

We left the Sandman hotel about 9.30 after a nice lie in. Packed up the mini and headed south to Niagara Falls. It was about an hours drive from the hotel and this time it was Stephs turn to drive. The roads were still pretty busy and it was taking a bit of used to driving on them as back in the Rocky Mountains it was a more leisurely relaxed pace of life. Over here the drivers are more ruthless and the roads faster. The turn offs from their motorways are strange and if you're in the slow lane and don't have your wits about you next minute you're heading off at the exit. So after good driving by Steph and excellent co-driving by me we arrived in Niagara Falls about 11am. Check in at the ... read more

Bye Bye Rockies Well . . . Today is a sad day, it's the day we leave the Rockies! We decided to make the most of it by getting up at 6am so we could explore a little more before starting our journey to Calgary airport to catch our lunchtime flight. So after a quick coffee in the room and a final pack up of all our stuff (there is a lot) we checked out of the hotel and headed towards Minnewanka lake (and yes I think it is pronounced how you think ?). Along the way we caught a very quick glimpse of a deer before it headed back into the trees. Not long after we came across a few cars parked up at the side of the road. Our first thought was they had ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff May 25th 2016

We woke up early yesterday at Emerald Lake Lodge and decided to head down to the lake to get some photos. The weather was better and the lake was more still. We wandered down to the bridge that leads to the lodges from the tourist car park. There were very few people around and it was so peaceful and still. The blue colour was really shining through as well. After walking about for a bit we decided to have breakfast here before heading on to Banff. We had gingerbread pancakes and coffee which was good. Once we finished breakfast it was back to the lodge before wheeling the cases down the hill to the main reception to check out and get the shuttle bus back to the car. As we were heading to the reception we ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Field May 22nd 2016

We woke up this morning at the Columbia Icefields discovery hotel to it snowing outside! Steph had commented five minutes earlier about the weather app on her phone saying it was lying because it said it was snowing. I opened the curtains to see it slowly coming down. We packed up and checked out of the hotel about 8.45 and set off. Excitement at the snow soon faded when the realisation set in that in the mountains when it snows generally it's pretty foggy and the cloud is low. In fact so low we could barely see the hugely magnificent mountains either side of the road and ahead of us! We realised that whilst we were driving on what has been voted one of the top ten scenic drives in the world that it didn't matter ... read more

Today we left Jasper and headed along the ice fields parkway to stay at the Colombian ice fields hotel. It overlooks the athabasca glacier. We left Jasper about 9.30am and drove for a little while before pulling off at the first stop. There was a set of waterfalls called the Athabasca Falls. There was a boardwalk that you walk on to get different view points of the water. We got some great photos. The water flows over the falls then becomes the athabasca river where it's a bluey turquoise colour. After visiting the athabasca falls we carried on driving until we reached the suwumpta falls. The path down was a bit slippery on some smooth rocks but we made it down. The fencing was a bit dodgy in parts but the view of the falls was ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Jasper May 21st 2016

I'm writing this in the restaurant at the top of 'The Whistlers' in Jasper. We got the sky tram up. Steph isn't happy at the moment aesthete is a huge family sat in the same area as us and they are talking very loud. It's hard to hear ourselves think! It's not helped by the fact that as soon as we went to sit down I put my sunglasses down on the table and one of the little kids came to steal them off the table!! The top of the mountain is very cold at -4 degrees. Our ski jackets, hats and gloves have come in handy although Steph forgot her hat and gloves so is now walking round like a proper tourist in a hat and gloves emblazoned with the word - Canada! We've wandered ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Jasper May 20th 2016

We had aimed to get up early to leave Clinton as we had a three and half hour drive to our next stop at Blue River. After the beers the night before we woke up a little later than planned, we checked out then decided to have breakfast at the onsite cafe. Steph had eggs on toast and I had buttermilk pancake with sausage and poached eggs. It was whilst we were munching away that we noticed the local from the night before who had paid for our beers was sitting there with two other guys who had been in the pub the night before! Not sure if he noticed us or not but they soon left and then we finished up and headed off. It was my turn to drive today. We decided in the ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Clinton May 18th 2016

I'm starting this at 10.05pm a little inebriated in bed stuffing my face with crisps and bounty bars! The temptation to write we did a big hike, saw a pretty lake then got pissed was strong but I think today earned a bit more effort! So what actually happened was..... We got up meaning to get an early start but didn't leave whistler until about 10am. We were aiming for Clinton 3.5 hours away. On the way was Joffre Lakes. There are three: lower lake which is about 400 metres from the car park, middle lake which was advertised as 2.5 hours walk from the first lake and upper lake a further 30mins away. Somehow we managed to get lost even finding the car park, I'd read during my research that it was 15mins north of ... read more
