Cost of Living in Cuenca I have been assessing Ecquador for the value that has been promoted and advertised for the low cost of living. Many had published that retirees can live for less than $1200 a month. When I assessed the latest real estate rental prices in Cuenca area I could not find any 2 BR/2BA for less than $700 a month making it more expensive than many metro US cities. Apparently expats are paying up the high rentals making it difficult for retirees and new comers on a budget. It is also a rude awakening that such a disparity would fuel an inflationary environment and the wrath of the locals for foreigners?
to Betsy Sorry, Betsy...it's been a year since we've been in Ecuador. We're living in Lake Chapala, Mexico, the largest ex pat community in the world we hear. LOTS to do.
Real Estate I am thinking of retiring to Equador but whenever I pull up real estate sites, I find the prices are as high if not higher than in the US. Is there a good, accurate and realalistic site for real estate investments in Equador? I don't know where I want to setle, but I would like it to be a place where there are plenty of ex pats. I would probably be interested in a small house or condo as I am single.
Thank you,
Betsy
Apartments My wife and I will be visiting Cuenca for the month of November. We are looking for a completely furnished 1 BR apartment to rent for the month at $300 or less. Any ideas?
Nice webpage! Hey, I just wanted to share with you people that on my recent trip to Cuenca I was quite thrilled by the city environment...comming from Guayaquil which is quite a noisy and big such a city, I found myself in heaven in Cuenca I must say...My friend stayed there ( he relocated there) and I'm planning to do that too! I now want to work and study there! Can't wait for that...One more thing, in less than 15 days I was able to make friends from there and other places since Cuenca is such an international/turistic place! Don't hesitate on going there, you'll be satisfied!
Thanks so much I am currently living in Hollywood, Fl but am very seriously considering living life in Ecuador. I lived in Colombia for 13 years. You said you were only there for only 2 1/2 weeks. Are you actually living there now? I am curious as to how much organic dairy products does Cuenca have?
Also do you know an honest realtor or builder? I will be coming to Cuenca in November and am quite excited, but I have no contacts in Ecuador at all. I would love to hear from you and your newsletter was incredibly informative.
Sincerely,
Craig Gardner
hybrid cars We have a question....how young or old of a hybrid car can you import into Ecuador? Or can it be any age?
Thank you for your other info it was very informative.

To Barry Thanks, Barry... After a lifetime of being totally programmed that beef, chicken, pork, and fish must be refrigerated lest you DIE or at least get seriously ill, I find it amazing that people eat unrefrigerated meat and fish and thrive! Why were we misled so then? Enjoy Cuenca!
Karl Hi Karl: I live in Manta and am in the process of moving to Cuenca which appears to be cheaper. Careful on the costs. From what I read I expected to live on $1200 a month. Didn't make it. We're struggling on $2000 / month.
To Mike We absolutely loved Cuenca and the beautiful Ecuadorians... but decided that unless we were fluent in Spanish, there was a quality of life issue in terms of activities /culture /involvement. Cuenca's a great place if you want to be a pioneer/founder and much cheaper than Chapala....BUT here we have English theatre, movies, musical groups, lectures, churches, classes, and more.... PLUS another culture and its people. It's going to be another 15-20 years in Cuenca for these things to develop. It's also much easier/cheaper to go back to the States/Canada from Mexico. I think if I were still raising a family though, I might choose Ecuador.
We're from the U.S., living in Mexico, and exploring Ecuador, wondering how it would be to actually live in this beautiful country about the size of Colorado. It's all an aventura! Click on any photo to enlarge. Thanks for visiting!
