Matatus... where do i start. They are small buses - minibuses. Pretty much everday we get on one and get off saying 'only in kenya'. A few examples: they are meant to hold 14 people, but frequently hold 20+, which results in you sitting on a strangers lap. they drive off without the conductor, who then has to throw himself at the side of the vehicle and jump in while it is moving. they dont all have windows - if a window breaks, you replace it with a plastic bag, and hope noone notices... i sat on one the other day where the sseat hadnt been nailed to the floor properly and moved back and forward every time we went in a hole - it is kenya, there are a lot of holes. the drivers eat ... read more

I went to a wedding on saturday. It was between a Kenyan girl and a norweign man. We had to leave the house at 4.30 to travel to the wedding that started at 10.00, and we only just made it! Seeing as i had come here to teach in a school and travel for 3 months, unsurprisingly i had no clothes suitable for a wedding... i was very underdressed! When we arrived, we were told they were running a bit late - the bride had only just finished her hair. We thought that meant a delay for a few minutes, not 2 hours and 35 minutes, which was how late the bride was! we thought she had backed out - after all, that is what happens in england - if you are that late, you must ... read more

Ahhh, where do you start with a question like that?? I said because you live in a hot country and I live in a cold country. they seemed satisfied with that, thank goodness!! it was a rubbish answer! Just a quick one, as i have written mum a long email and will run out of money if i dont hurry up! Have just been teaching for the last couple of days, as well as relaxing at the house. It was so cold here yesterday (im thinking that if i was in hitting range, you would all have just whacked me one, because cold here is about 18 degrees C!!!) but i did wear a coat all day. was back to being hot again today. they are saying maybe 30+ next week - hahaha! The kids are ... read more

Everywhere I go, I hear 'Mzungu (white person) how are you?', or 'Jambo' and am given a hand to shake. I find it so funny, and a little bit awkward as well, especially when I am in a hurry! It is still very hot here - kind of wasnt expecting it to be this hot... try not to laugh too much, I know it is Africa! I have been taking lots of photos of the school and kids today (I mean lots...) so I will add them on at the weekend and you can all see where I am working. It is literally, 3 cement block buildings with chairs inside - no electric, no running water, nothing! but the kids are happy so thats good. I took my photos of Suffolk and home in today - ... read more

So soince i last left a blog thingy i have made three australian friends, moved to Kitengela, taught a class, been given work to mark at home, risked my life on a matatu, eaten using my hands and so many others i dont know where to start. Very briefly, on sturday three australians arrived and i spen the next couple of days with them, we went to a restaurant and ordered chicken stew. We were then told we had to eat it with our hands. you can imagine what we looked like!! We alos went to a market, where everyone we spoke to wanted to know what team i supported (they were gutted when i replied that io dont follow football!). On Sunday I came here to Kitengela where i am staying with my host family. ... read more

Following a very turbulant flight, I have finally managed to make it here, and I am now in my hotel in Nairobi. It is so hot! I wasn't expecting these kind of temperatures,so when i got off the plane with a long sleeve top, fleece, rain coat and walking boots, I ended up feeling a bit dizzy at passport control... David was there to pick me up and take me to the hotel. It is quite central in Nairobi, and I am proud to say I have already ventured out to the local supermarket. I managed to get lost coming back. I dont know how - it is a 30 second walk, turn right out of the hotel and then straight, but I couldn't remember which way to go when i got out. After a few ... read more

So it's just three more sleeps until I leave and I have just got all my stuff downstairs to begin packing tomorrow. I currently have a sofa bed covered in piles of clothes, shoes, sleeping bag, medicine bits, stuff to take to the school and so on, and just a 60+20 litre backpack to fit it all into. I think I may have to leave most of it behind... I don't really have anything else to say at the moment, so the next time I put something on here will probably be when I am in Kenya!... read more
