We are now in wine country, in the Sonoma valley - Napa Valley’s prettier neighbour. It is lovely, but we think Slovenia beats it for beautiful countryside. We are staying in a little cottage just off the main plaza - with orange trees on our doorstep and every possible detail thought through with style. We had a day the vineyards where we drank a little wine. The next day we drove to the coast to peer over the cliffs at elephant seals snoozing in the sunshine. A couple of little pups were a bit restless and barking as the elders slept like the dead. We had a picnic lunch overlooking the Francis Drake bay - wonderful.... read more

Picnic in the park in Sonoma valley

A long drive when we left Kings Canyon so a big breakfast - but ordering is so complicate. “How would you like your eggs ma’am?” “er, fried?” Wrong answer, she was looking for Over, Up, or whatever else they do with them here. Then it’s “biscuits, bacon, sausage, muffin, wheat, white, rye, griddle cake or potatoes ma’am?” Err… So with our huge American breakfast inside us and the roof down, we drove past all the snowy trees twinkling in the bright sunlight - risking melting snow dumping on our heads! It was 8,000 feet down then 6,000 feet back up into Yosemite. The landscape was breathtaking but different again to the places we have been with huge sheer rock faces, waterfalls, trees, canyons and rivers. Everything is on a larger than life scale. Our home this ... read more

Driving through snowy Yosemite

From Death Valley to Kings Canyon you have to drive around the Sierra Nevada mountains - over 300 miles. So after 2 days and stops in Bakersfield and a much cuter town called Visalia, we passed through acres of orange groves to reach the west side of the Sierras. We literally looked up from the orange groves to the snow peaked mountains. 10 miles climbing up the hills it was evident the snow was going to be a problem for our little Mustang. Andy had already worked out that we were going to stop for snow chains. It was evident that it was essential. We crawled on up the hill and the snow and the trees were magnificent. The Sequoia trees are the largest trees in the world - 12 metres diameter - what!! Having lived ... read more

As we nosed through the mountain range headed for Death Valley we didn’t really know what to expect - but you do tend to think about those early pioneers trying to get their wagons through the mountains only to come across Death Valley!!! The area truly is vast and barren and seems endless. We booked into a lodge at Stovepipe Wells on the end of the valley and took trips to all the best tourist sites. We did have lots of fun particularly on the sand dunes - it’s a lot like Formby - only much much bigger!!! It was hot visiting in the winter - but we just couldn’t imagine it in the heat of the summer - up to 134 degrees - ouch!!!! Yesterday we did all the desert sights and ended up at ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Zion National Park February 24th 2007

The drive through Zion National Park was pretty spectacular. The recent snow seemed to highlight the beauty of the rock formations and colours. Every turn was awesome and we kept clicking the camera to try to capture it but really nothing can work as well as your eyes. It is hard to find all the adjectives to give this area justice. We had a fantastic evening - chilled out in the hot tub - just as the sun set over the mountains. We set off to do the narrows hike in the morning and got as far as the river before turning back. It was very cold but inspirational. Next step - the heat of Death Valley. ... read more

Ooopps - if only we had stopped for fuel this morning. Then, just as all hope was fading, looming out through the snowstorm - the most beautiful fuel station in the world -Thank the lord!! (well we are in Mormon country) Not so long later we entered Zion national park and we were once again wowed by the magnificent scenery. ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Lake Powell February 22nd 2007

We had been told that Lake Powell was well worth a visit and, as Steve, Jo, Tom and Ollie have the name, we ought to visit their Lake. We have booked in for 3 days. We sorted our life out - laundry/car wash/shopping etc. The best part was definitely buying my (Kate speaking) new cowboy boots and wearing them for an evening at the local steak house - they are so woonnderffffullll. Enough of that……… Yesterday we headed up Antelope Creek without a paddle… …but we did have a lovely picnic and a bottle of Sparkly!! It was a beautiful sunny day so we hired a small motor boat and set off for a 4 hour trip on Lake Powell (Steve’s Lake). We cruised down through amazing colourful craggy canyons in crystal blue water with the ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Monument Valley February 20th 2007

On horseback it really felt like the best way to see Monument Valley. We drove to a ranch close to the Navajo tribal park and arranged for a private trail ride with a guide. Andy was on Toby and Kate was riding Frosty - we set off with our guide Shane for a 3 hour amazing ride into Horse Canyon through all the spectacular rock formations. Shane is married to a Navajo Indian so he had lots of stories and information. This morning we went back to the park and drove the public loop. The weather changed to glorious sunshine and we drove the dusty road with the top down. Beautiful. We picked up a list of Movies that have been filmed in the area so we have lots of films to catch up on when ... read more

Yesterday we drove from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon. We were both quite dumbstruck when we first looked over the rim into the Canyon. The amazing thing is that it just keeps changing at each view point and with every change in light. It really does make you feel very vulnerable and small. We stayed at a lodge hotel and set ourselves up to watch both the sunset and the sunrise. Sunrise was extra special with a glass or two of bucks fizz! We have taken around 200 photos so I think we should have a good one in there somewhere. Our special treat this morning was a late breakfast of eggs Benedict at the posh 1905 hotel right on the rim before we left. ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Flagstaff February 17th 2007

We waved goodbye to Vegas and drove to Flagstaff, stopping off at the Hoover Dam. It truly is great driving along in the sunshine with the hood down. In the afternoon we were in 70+ degrees and then arrived in Flagstaff smattered in snow - how weird. Flagstaff is a great little town, with lots of character and a really good night life. We only last until around 11.00 p.m. but the atmosphere was great. ... read more
