So , it's raining and I decided to reflect on two incidences that took more time to relay. Please, if you don't want to here about toilets, don't read the second part! We had to spend a single night in Bangkok ( weeks ago) for Alex’s follow up appt and followed the Lonely Planet’s advice, which has been good so far. We arrived at our destination , Ayutthaya Hotel, which was really quite sleek looking, with teak furniture out front and flowers and green plants spilling over into the walk ways. Upon entering the lobby, Alex noticed what appeared to be [View Full Entry]

I just spent a good chunk of time uploading pictures, so I'm just gonna be brief again, and I'll cover more ground when we blog again in the next couple of days. Tarutao was amazing. Deserted... unspoilt... wild... exactly what we had hoped for from that island. And now we're on Lipe, which is kind of what we'd hoped Railay would be. Mellow, sleepy vibe, but still some stuff to do, and places to go hang out in the evenings. I would call it the "Chiang Mai of the South Andaman" if anybody wouldn't think I was a total douche-bag for [View Full Entry]

As Alex said, we made it! We're on the island of Ko Lipe in the National Marine Park of Taurutao. Our little bungalow is quite literally 20 feet from the emerald water of the Andaman. Long tail boats troll the osland in search of passengers day and night, though it is possible to walk around it in less than an hour. In short, it's gorgeous! We went snorkeling for hours yesterday in a shallow protected cove and got a slight sunburn, so today we simply sat on the porch of our bamboo bungalow and read. This is the life. Tarutao was [View Full Entry]

Hey, we're alive... for parents and such. Real big blog to follow in next 2 days. Tarutao was amazing. Now we're on Ko Lipe. But this connection is beyond suck. Hey suckas, we’re blogging from the “world’s most beautiful beach,” according to a conclusive 2006 survey. It’s called Railay (or Rai Leh), on the island of Krabbi. What we didn’t take into account is that 2006’s “most beautiful beach” is inevitably going to be 2007’s “most heavily under construction and most heavily touristed beach.” It’s really not that bad, and it’s still amazingly beautiful, but it’s still a letdown from what we were hoping for and expecting. So it goes. We planned on staying o [View Full Entry]

So Julie and I just received some possibly devastating news in the form of a message board rumor. Deep breath… here goes: We might not be able to use Wikipedia when we’re in China. Now, now… Don’t rouse the lynch-mob yet, because we may have figured out a way around this problem for when we have to settle disputes using a source whose infallibility surpasses that of God Almighty. Whenever we have a wager: say, whether a coconut tree can or cannot produce more milk than a cow during the winter months… or, whether a dog’s red rocket contains more or [View Full Entry]

Ok, so Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We just got back from a 3 day, 2 night "trek" into Doi Inthanon National Park. Yup, 2 nights in the jungle. Really, it was more of a guided hike than an adventure tour, but cool nonetheless. We started the tour by taking an elephant ride, which I could have lived without and Alex thought was ok. Then we hiked uphill for about 3 hours, up to a village in the mountains and spent the 1st night in a small hut. The second day, we hiked for 4 hours, with long breaks for lunch and spent [View Full Entry]

Man, Khao San Road. That place is intense. After being shut up in the hotel for nearly 5 days, we started our exploring with a trip to backpacker central. I was overwhelmed, to say the least. The part of town we're in now is busy but we encounter very few white people and the restaurants are full of Thais. No one pays any attention to us at all. It's as if we're not even on the radar. Not so on Khao San Sand. People are constantly trying to get my attention, sell me crap I don't want, offereing me trickets that [View Full Entry]

We went back to the Lasik center for Alex’s 2nd follow up appointment today. His right eye is perfectly healed but the left is not. It’s healing ok, just needs few more days. What this means for Alex (for both of us, really) is another day stuck in the dark hotel room trying to sleep. We’ve been staying at Charlie Guesthouse in Lumpini, which is both cheap and clean but doesn’t boast much else. I wanted to move us to another hotel , one a bit more upscale but Alex isn’t really ready to get up and start moving around yet. [View Full Entry]

….20 slash 16 that is. Which is a tentative assumption of what my vision will be once my eyes have finished healing. Also, if you’re thinking that your eyeball is a great place to shoot a laser then you probably got really great taste in laser-shooting locations. The procedure I had was not lasik, but something called PRK. It’s virtually the same procedure but the healing process is longer more painful, and more involved. PRK was recommended in my case because I have thin corneas. But I’m healing well and look forward to being able to see clearly and unaided for [View Full Entry]
