Today as we are writing this blogpost it is a rainy day, the temperature is around 22 to 23 degrees, a perfect day for Judith to get her nails done and for Merijn to get a haircut, as you do. We settled down for the coming week in one of the most beautiful Portuguese colonial towns (Paraty) in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Today it’s exactly 10 months since we left home, family and friends to start this trip. We have traveled more or less down from El Salvador in Central America, through quite a large part of South America and ended up holidaying in Brazil. We are finalising this part of our journey and we will leave for Africa in 10 days. We are leaving behind Central and South America with mixed feelings, excited to ... read more

South America » Uruguay » East » Punta del Diablo November 16th 2017

Just because Uruguay is such a pleasant surprise and because we have enjoyed it so much we wanted to share some more pictures from the second part of our trip along the Atlantic coast of Uruguay. This means a lot of beach pictures so if this is not an appropriate moment for you, as we understand European autumn has arrived, please just skip this post. From Paloma we traveled to Cabo Polonio which is the direct opposite of Punta del Este. Where Punta del Este is the high rise building hip and posh latin American jet set beach resort, Cabo Polonio is a small hippie fishing village without electricity and running water in the middle of a nature reserve. Where in Punta del Este you can look at people, in Cabo Polonio you actually meet people. ... read more

Just a one hour boat ride across the river from Buenos Aires we found ourselves in Uruguay, which in a lot of aspects is the small brother of Argentina. Both countries are very modern and have a very European feel. The Uruguayans speak with the same accent we find a bit difficult to get used to and they eat the same (or more) amount of beef from the asado which we love. In summer half of the people in the country are actually from Argentina (on holidays) . We find the Uruguayan people a bit more friendly and live is clearly a bit more relaxed than their neighbours, travelling around the small country has been smooth and easy although again as in Argentina a bit expensive. Landing in Colonia we spent a few days wandering around ... read more

How little did we know about the gastronomic treat we were going to get ourselves into after entering Argentina. Directly after crossing the small bridge, which was the actual border, everything felt different, the people spoke a different Spanish accent, the food was different, to be honest it felt a lot less Latino and very much more European. Although immediately we missed the Latin feeling we absolutely savoured the wines, the cheese, the ham and sausage, the empanadas and of course the beef. We got ourselves to the town of Salta first where we dove straight into an amazing store where we had our first taste of Argentine bubbly wine and a picada which is a plate with tapas like cheese and charcuterie and then ordered a nice Malbec before moving to another place for dinner ... read more

From Puno in Peru we took a bus along the Titikaka lake, including a crossing of a small strait, across the border to Bolivia, with again beautiful landscapes of the Andes peaks and volcanoes. We ended up in La Paz, again at around 4000 meters above sea level, with perfect sunny blue skies during the day and crystal clear and cold nights. La Paz was quite a pleasant surprise, being a combination of a modern city with a very strong indigenous presence and feel, with a very touristy ghetto like city centre though. We spent a few days wandering around the city with the snowy peaks as a continuous backdrop and visiting the enormous local bi-weekly market at the El Alto, the highest major metropolis in the world, with an average elevation of 4,150 meters above ... read more

We travelled down from Ecuador via one of the most efficient border posts ever ... some things do change apparently. We headed for the beach and ended up in Mancora, a former fishing village turned into a Peruvian surf beach town. The place is famous (in Peru and beyond) for the waves and especially for the opportunity to kitesurf very long waves. There was enough wind to do some kitesurfing but there were no waves so that was quite disappointing. We enjoyed the seafood, walked the long stretch of beach and after a few days jumped into a bus to Trujillo. Trujillo is a city with both beautiful colonial architecture and pre-Inca ruins all around. We visited some museums and some huge ruins. Parts of these were remarkably well saved from the elements and it was ... read more

The panamericana cuts through deep canyons and crosses high passes going from Colombia to Ecuador. We head straight to the capital Quito where we arrive just after the Festival of Lights has started, meaning the city centre is shut and the streets are full with thousands of people admiring the beautiful colourful light installations projected on the antique buildings. We get our taxi through a road block to drop us as close as possible to our hostel in the city centre. We spend the weekend walking around both the historical centre and the more modern part of town. Quito is a beautiful, lively city and feels very friendly and safe, unlike many capitals in this part of the world. We enjoy the Festival of Lights every evening and we end up in a small bar where ... read more

From the great modern city of Medellin we hopped on a bus to Salento, a small beautiful colonial town in the mountains. We stayed in a hostel called Tralala, well run by Hemmo, a Dutchman with whom we got along well. Social media had shown us Helene and Clement, the French friends we made in Cabo de la Vela, were also in Salento so we met up and had a fun dinner and afterwards went to the local Tejo bar to play tejo, a local game in which you have to throw a kind of flat ball of metal weighing around a pound towards a ring in mud with small explosives on it. Of course this goes accompanied with a lot of drinking which should improve either the score or just the fun. We were all ... read more

Nature is just beautiful and while travelling we are privileged to visit so many great places and to encounter so many amazing wildlife. The past few days we have spent at again one of the most remote places in Colombia, a Pacific Ocean beach with almost no tourists, an old fishing village called La Barra. La Barra is close to a bay where humpback whales give birth and where we have witnessed the adult whales teaching their young the basics of life like breathing, breaching and waving their fins to tourists. Just an amazing experience.... read more
