After the grand snooze, it was up and at 'em and on the road to Aveiro. This is another little fishing village that has lent itself to tourist pursuits. Aveiro is a city of canals and bridges, waters plied by colourful boats (barques) and home to salieneras. Salienaras are facilities where salt is extracted from ocean water and then turned into a vast variety of products, some for munching and some for scrubbing. Portuguese people have a great love of salt. It has been used since olden days to preserve cod and many varieties are produced for use on the table. There is the usual bleached white type, but also brown salts, salts flecked with black, grey salt and lovely coarse, chunky salts. When you begin to explore the world of salt, it can become something of ... read more

From Porto, we zip down the line and land in Mogofores station. It's time to spend some time with our friends the Verdades. The Familia Verdade live in a town called Avelas de Cima. No one could tell me how old the place was, but it's easy to see that the place is pretty darn old. After the bustle of Porto, Avelas de Cima was positively tranquil. People are old fashioned and extremely friendly. It could be the community ammenities, like the communal laundry pool (in use even in frigid March) and fountains (three, to be exact) that present excellent quality spring water to any who wish to take it. Sleepy cafes with sunny seats, orange and lemon trees left wild (producing abundantly even now) and a profusion of huge, naturalized canna lilies frame the rest ... read more

My feeling toward the people of Europe is one of appreciation and affection. Everyone is kind and helpful. Were it not for the kind intervention of some unknown Samaritan in Brussels, we would have never FOUND our plane let alone catch it. Landing in Porto, the good feelings continued as we were accepted into the warm current of life in this vibrant and truly entertaining city. Again, strangers came forth to offer assistance (Maria hobbling about with her cane may have been some help in this regard...), unbidden but certainly appreciated. This is a real blue collar town. Folks here yell and gesture, they argue and kiss and generally strut around like a bunch of hormone-crazed teenagers. Workmen seem to be everywhere, knocking stuff flat and putting things up and patching things together.Buildings are ornate, but ... read more

Well, well, here we are again. It’s been 4 days since our last blog, mostly because of one event that occurred last Thursday the 17th. But let us start at the beginning. As you know we have been in Porto enjoying this great city. We bought a 48hr tour pass on a double decker bus, a hop-on-hop off and visit what you want variety . There are three different routes. There is a Bridge tour, Castles tour and the Historical tour. For example In 1387, a marriage took place between João I and Philippa of Lancaster. They got married in the newly established city of Porto and this confirmed the military alliance between Portugal and England. After this union, the city began to thrive. And to a great extent, this is how the Henry the Navigator, third ... read more

We have arrived. After 21hrs and three flight changes, we are doing well. The kids had a blast on the first flight but then, you know... (are we there yet?). It is inevitable. Kevin will give you his side of the story, here is mine. I count my falling down the stairs and spraining my ankle a great blessing. Because we never could have gotten around without the help of the staff at all the airports. We arrived on the 16 of March 12:30 local time. Seeing the roof tops mad me cry with joy. I know that sounds weird, but hey (maybe lack of sleep?). We took the subway into Porto. Funny, English people call the city Oporto, but here that means one is going to Porto. Once we got off the metro, were soon ... read more

Making full use of the generously provided inflight entertainment system, I offer the following suggestions... (music) Pacifika and their album Supermagique. These are well produced, trippy little tracks with plenty of polyrhythms and beautiful multilingual harmonies. New Agey without being weird ( Yes, please keep the elves and fairies at bay....) (music) Rush and their album Moving Pictures. One of my favourite songs, The Camera Eye, filling your head at 30,000 feet simply cannot be oversold. The soundtrack from my Big City days in Toronto. (film) Neighbours A classic short film by Norman Mclaren and Grant Munro that presents the folly of Cold War politics. (film) Strings/Cordes A sweet short film that shows us how we really do belong to each other. (film) Charlie Chaplin The New Janitor A vintage one here from 1916. A janitor ... read more

Maria ordered me a special request Muslim meal for my midair dinner. She likely figured this would flag me as suspect and hustle me into some full body search and scan at the hands of the Border Patrol. Such is the sense of humour posessed by my dear missus. There was some real confusion on the part of the attendant as she offered me the platter, to be sure. I just smiled and took what was given me. I considered asking which direction Mecca lay so I could unfurl my prayer rug at the appropriate hour, but I reconsidered and decided I best not confuse matters any more than neccessary. Worst of all, I feared that my designation might make it hard to order a glass of wine. The staff soon realized that I was not ... read more

After a well needed, but momentary, rest at our friends the Pailamillas in Vancouver, we are now out into the open blue and on our way. Our stay at the home of Jorge and Kim provided me with much more than physical rest. It has added to a sense of mental preparedness I am enjoying and that I have been slowly edging in to for months.Jorge and Kim are like Maria and myself, a couple from mixed cultures, he being Chilean and she someone raised in a typical Canadian setting. Their home reflects their happy life together, with bright colours, nifty curios and lovely folk art.It is a real haven from the blandness that surrounds us.I have determined that I could do more to open myself up to the heritage of my Portugese wife, maybe loosen ... read more

As we are about to embark, Maria has decided that I need a makeover.I did protest feebly, but these things are not really worth resisting. What defence I had mustered was met with a general description of my daily garb as that which would be worn by a bum. Women can be so cruel, and those of the wifely variety, the most cruel of all. So it began. A haircut, innocent enough. And I must say that Maria did an excellent job.I must have stared at myself in the mirror for an hour and a half. I began to feel comfortable. Then the razor came out again, and it came toward my brow. Maria had determined that the eyebrows must be modified. More feeble protests on my part, met with the declaration that my fuzzy forehead made me ... read more

Yes, pulling out my hair has been part of my travel plan. But I may get to Portugal with some of it intact; or wear a wig. Either way, we're still going. So out of my $9000.00: I've purchased cheap airline tickets( with insurance- can't forget that) for about $4100.00. We leave March 14 and return April 01,a total of 17 days. With that done, I can now plan our trip. This part has not been very easy, but this is what our itinerary looks like. First our flights: From Vancouver BC, to Montreal on to Brussels and then arriving in Porto, Portugal. All in all, 21 hrs. Our departure from Portugal will be different. We are leaving from Lisbon in the south. There is no extra cost in this and doing things this way will ... read more
