The adage, ‘there is no place like home’ could not have been more apt than after almost a year and half overseas but what would be an even more apt expression for my return would be ‘there is no place like Africa!’ A long flight home, a brief stopover in Jo’burg to see some of my lovely family and it was once again back to ORT to catch my last flight, for a while, to the land of more family, food and lots and lots of R & R! My excitement was truly too much too contain. I landed in Maun just after lunch time on the 22nd of December just in time for Christmas and I was expecting to be picked up and ushered, by a random, onto a Cessna on rout to see mom ... read more

Well, if there was one thing I never thought I would experience or rather see in my life its an airport like land border post. The Malaysians and Singaporeans sure have spared no cost to make their border quite amazing and super efficient, I have to say. After a couple of hours on our very comfy bus we were ushered off, with all our luggage, and into a very impressive customs hall. Naturally the two South Africans with their non compliant, un-bar-coded passports had the line halted while the Malaysian customs lady doubting our right to exit the country (never mind that they had let us in, in the first place). Thankfully after many a phone call and debate they decided that we were worth to depart and so our sun bronzed selves and enough cameras, ... read more

Since I can remember, my entire vision of Malaysia was built on a mind’s eye image of Melaka, oddly enough. As a result, my expectations of the city were revving on the red side of the expectations temperature gauge which is often a little dangerous but what could possibly be disappointing about a Colonially marked Muslim Indo-china symbiosis? After our 100th over night, just better than bearable bus ride, the bus station appear around 7am, marking our much anticipated arrival in Melaka. Admittedly the general mood of our pair was erring on the side of irritably exhausted and we still had to negotiate our way to the other side of the city so we did what sensibly exhausted travellers do and stopped for a coffee break before having to muster the energy to haggling with a ... read more

Good afternoon everyone this is your Captain speaking, we will shortly be descending on the land of all things western, many things fake, lots that’s cultural and where the temperature is a sweaty 32 degrees C with 80% humidity and all this some distance away from a tuk tuk driver or a local washing his prize cow! Welcome to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. A brisk walk alongside the tarmac, a speedy customs check and forex change and we were out of the door and on a bus headed for the city. It’s difficult not to notice the marks of a truly capitalist nation when the first things you see are the Mc Donalds and Starbucks illuminated insignia jutting out of every second building! This aside we were decidedly excited at what Malaysia had to hold and not ... read more

I have travelled to and through many boarders in my life, so far, but none have been quite as original as my border crossing between Chau Doc and Phnom Penh. We parted the fishing village in Chau Doc on board a slow boat where we parked off, took in the sights along the river banks while filling out customs forms, exchanged currency and getting in some last minute reading about the country we were bound for. I could truthfully have admitted, at that point, that I knew little to nothing about Cambodia. True to our guides word three hours went by in a flash and we stopped at an aluminum floating building where we were suddenly ushered off the boat, relived of our passports, $22 and our paper work and were then herded into the ... read more

A quick fill up on a standard Vietnam backpackers free breakfast aka; bananas, baguettes and tea, and we headed for the tour company via the street backer (the giant choc chip peanut biscuits looked too irresistible not to be sampled) and joined a group of people all bound for a touristy day on the Mekong. While anything is possible on your own, tour companies have been clever and they offer tours at prices that are sometimes cheaper than what you would end up paying if you tried to replicate the trip on your own so you are almost left with no option but to sign up and since having already joined so many tours on our travels at is safe to say we were a little nervous about the touristy tit-bits that go hand in hand ... read more

Note to self, if you plan on catching the 1am bus between Mui Ne and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh) don’t overlook the day before confirmation process like we did otherwise you will also have the bus company laugh at you when you arrived at 10am the morning of the bus departure expecting to get a couple of seats. Initially we were a bit annoyed at our stupidity cause it did mean we could only get on the 8:30am bus the following morning resulting in is having to pay for an additional nights accommodation and it meant we would be traveling on the bus during the day but in hindsight we were grateful we didn’t have to lurk with our bags on the dark Mui Ne streets or sit in a less than happening bar between 10:30, ... read more

For the first time on our trip Ken and I had called a couple of guesthouses to try and pre book our accommodation. Usually we just rock up at a spot and take it from there but our bus was due to arrive in Mui Ne at 1:30am so be though we best not take our chance and rather book a spot. Some five bumpy hours later we arrived in Mui Ne where we were hurriedly ushered off the bus before it made a speedy departure leaving us in its dust on the very dark, deserted street at the completely wrong end of Mui Ne. Not knowing where we were and not being able to decipher where we were in relation to where we had booked to stay we headed down a small dirt path heading ... read more

Traveling in Vietnam is great, in fact traveling South East Asia is great, it’s like a giant Contiki tour only there isn’t just one bus carrying only 30 people but rather 100’s of buses carrying as many people all eager to explore and have a party. As a result you meet people in one place, part ways for a bit and then meet up again a city or a country later having collected a couple more new friends along the way, it’s brilliant. It just so happened that we ended up sitting next to a British couple that Andrew had become acquainted with, some days prior, on our overnight bus to Nha Trang. The five of us commandeered the very, very narrow top level of bunk beds at the back of the bus, watched a movie ... read more
