Oh Joy! Now there are some of you out there who will know only too well how happy I am that the dreaded black shoes have finally bitten the dust (all shout hurrah!). And what is more, John has given in and said that he would consider wearing flipflops. Now for those of you that don’t know, he has been violently opposed to such footwear, snarling at the mere suggestion that he gets a pair of what the Australians call ‘thongs’ all the time we were travelling around Asia - which is a great shame, because I bought a pair of really good croc flipflops for less than £3 and they’ve been great. So here I am in Australia, the land of the thong, trying desperately to find a pair of acceptable manly flipflops for my ... read more

A totally laid back day, consisting of lots of sleeping, some swimming and a small amount of laundry duty! The daytime temperature is about 30 degrees and the humidity is really high, so it’s good to just relax round the pool and have a dip every now and then. A brief venture to the beach as a small flotilla of ships appeared on the horizon, then back to the Su Doku! By the way, our apartment is on the second floor between the two big palms in the photo - unfortunately, it’s behind the two smaller palms but you get the picture! So, not much happening, so perhaps this is the time for us to start ruminating on our experiences in The Land Downunder... The first thing people will tell you proudly is that Australia is ... read more

Today’s the day we had arranged to meet up with my Cousin Steve and his son (my cousin once removed?) Derek. Steve has been living out in Australia since he was 19 (a very, very long time ago), and the last time we met up was when he was over in England about 20 years ago, when Derek was about 6 and blond. We persuaded them that it would be a good idea to have a drink in a pub, even though they don’t drink alcohol - this was so that we could say that we did actually get to have a beer in an Australian Hotel before we left. And then we caught up! It was really lovely to see them both and find out what they were up to - and we can only ... read more

Yes folks, a day on the Great Barrier Reef - the World’s largest living ‘thing’ - and can be seen from space! A big sigh of relief when we woke up and found the promised improvement in weather had arrived just in time for our big day out on the Great Barrier Reef. The 90 minute transfer over to the Marine World platform seemed to take an eternity but we finally arrived, quickly put on our masks and flippers and were soon out in the water. Amazingly, one of the first sites was a gigantic blue fish about 3 foot by 2 foot closely followed by a scuba diver with a camera. Unfortunately, this rather unsettled Valerie, who hates having her picture taken at the best of times, and heralded a rapid return to the ... read more

Hope you have a really good day today Danielle ... but I should warn you that you’re making me feel old!! Have a good one, sorry we can’t be with you, but we’ll celebrate when we get back. Today we set off for Kananda, a small ‘hippy’ village in the middle of the rain forest. It was known many years ago for the hippy market selling their handmade wares. I think the real attraction is the journey to get there, which had been recommended to us by umpteen people. Normally you would go one way by train, but there has been a landslide over the track due to all of the rain, so we had to go both ways by cable car. It was really good, despite rain threatening throughout the day and low clouds spoiling ... read more

When I got up at 7.00 this morning the sun was streaming into the apartment. By half past, the clouds had come over and I thought uh oh another wet day - but no! By 10.00 it was gloriously sunny and we were debating whether to try the pool or the beach first. We called in on Karen, the Manager, to organise the next few days’ and stopped to discuss Fijian curries - and came away with some of her curry spices out of her freezer ... so you can guess what I’m cooking up for tonight! I suppose we’d better come clean and confess that we’ve decided that we aren’t going to rent a car and charge up to Cape Tribulation, neither are we going to do the same, but stop at Port Douglas instead ... read more

Oh my word, did it rain in the night! I was actually woken up by the noise! I lay back in my comfy bed and thought ‘thank goodness we’re not in the van!’ It was still raining when we got up, it was still raining when we drank our tea, still raining when Karen (the owner) rang to offer us a lift to the shops and it was still raining when we caught the taxi back. In fact, it hasn’t stopped raining all day. And do you know what? It really hasn’t bothered us. We’ve had a great day! For the first time since we set off, we’ve really been able to empty our bags, unpack properly and just sort everything out. The washing machine has been going all day (as has the tumble), we’ve taken ... read more

If we do say so ourselves, a very well organised packing and cleaning morning saw us on the road to the airport on schedule (a master of planning!) I’ve got to say that planning the route to the airport was fraught with problems as we knew there was a toll road that would automatically charge us, but it didn’t appear on any of our maps. I’m still hoping that we didn’t actually drive on it without noticing!! One thing did strike me, we’ve referred to the Suffolk place names in South Australia, followed by the Irish ones in Victoria - well, amongst others, Sydney and outskirts does have a flavour of home with Woolwich, Greenwich and even Canterbury and Bexley (I’m still a Kentish girl at heart) - there are places with more exotic names and ... read more

An early start this morning after a late night chatting to two Dutch travellers in a Hippy Van - they’ve also taken a leave of absence and have been travelling extensively. They were telling us that they have just been on the South Island of NZ and that they were so cold at night they were sleeping in their clothes and thick socks. So that’s something to look forward to! In the meantime, we’re still having daytime temperatures in the mid-late 20s and cooler evenings, which have meant that we have to put a warmer top on if we’re sitting out after dinner. So Birthday Day! We drove down to Parramatta and caught the 10 o’clock ferry into Sydney. The journey took 55 minutes, with only one stop, and was wonderful as we cruised into Sydney ... read more

(couldn’t resist this title - its being used on one of the radio stations to advertise an Easter sale and it did make me grin!) Woke up this morning, and looked out excitedly - most disappointed that the tent had actually lasted the whole night!! Ah well! Last night John managed to load all of our blog entries, so those of you that subscribe will feel overloaded the next time you log on, it was the excitement of getting WiFi access after a dearth of McDonalds! We were also hoping to be able to Skype, and went over early (for us) this morning to see if we could find anyone on line back in the UK, but no luck! Ah well, hopefully we’ll have access in the hotel in Cairns next week, so please do try ... read more
