Well, time flies when you’re having fun, eh? We cleaned up Swier’s Farmhouse early on Wednesday morning—strange what the male cousins left behind but I think I now know where all the missing mates of sock pairs live—and were on the way to make our flight from Manchester to Dublin in a circuitous pattern. The squiggle of a driving route began with a return trip to Haddon Hall because I had a sneaking thought that my sunglasses may have tumbled out of my purse when we stopped in their café for lunch. The super helpful and cheerful tour guide came skipping back towards us in pink knitted cap and fuchsia willies, big smile and thumbs up. Glasses found! Now on to Chester. Of course it rained, hailed, and sleeted and of course we were again circling ... read more

It didn’t hail or sleet today! A “fine English rain” (the kind that comes straight down) showed up just as we left for Chesterfield to find a battery charger---just minutes after I realized that I no longer had my prescription sunglasses in my purse-or in the rental car—or in my jacket pocket---or in the couch under the cushions or in cousin John’s car. Shit! The good news is that we got a wham-bang-doozie of a universal battery charger that adapts to all of the various worldwide electrical volts that we might ever need. Crazy wonderful, I say! To get the charger we drove to Chesterfield and landed there on yet another Market Day. I was sorely tempted by the ankle length three tiered tie-dyed skirt with the mint green daisy-appliqued tee-shirt. My need to avoid hippy ... read more

Hello from rainy, sleeting, and freezing cold England! First of all, we have not dropped off the face of the planet but we are facing communication challenges. We thought we had worked most of these out last trip, but of course we hadn’t taken into account that Sim chips inactivate themselves, so, none of the cell phone numbers that we sent to stateside contacts are working. We tried a work-around and that seemed to be a solution but in the end, we had a cell phone solution with no bars. Funny in a country with so many pubs, don’t you think? I haven’t been able to access my email account from the laptop, and there has really, really not been time to write the blog until today. Really. A quick re-cap of our adventure so far: ... read more

Day 33 Northern California Although we have been home for almost a month, when we took the pictures for this last blog it was actually the last night of John's vacation. I had convinced him to take a week after we came home--the longest vacation he has ever taken-- because, honey, jet lag does not get easier as one gets older. On this morning, Sunday, I woke up late. I was already feeling a tad bit guilty when I wandered into the kitchen mid-morning in yoga clothes. John is sitting at the kitchen table with a big grin…”Why are you wearing an apron?” Then my nose detects…beans, tomatoes, sausages, bacon? Is it…? Is it?... Yes! My darling husband is creating a Full Irish/English/Maine (beans included) breakfast for our last morning of vacation together… During breakfast we ... read more

Days 26 Greenwich, London to Heathrow to Home Our car is to arrive at 9:30 AM which will hopefully get us to Heathrow by 10:30. We have had breakfast: one last helping of beans, eggs, tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms, ham, and bacon, but it does not drown out the lingering regret. We are leaving…… Our driver arrives and is puzzled, “All of that is your luggage?” Well, yes, we don’t ordinarily take other people’s luggage with us. Turns out he had been told to expect one suitcase-not five. So, he charges us 5 pounds more and off we go. We wind our way through Greenwich to Kensington and finally to Heathrow and in doing so we have been on a tour from London slums to beautiful neighborhoods in an hour. Interesting thing about these London cabbies and ... read more

Days 24 and 25 Salisbury “Nice Church, Great Rocks….” We sleep wonderfully well. That is a very good thing because our waking thoughts are: Wow! It’s hot already and we have gotten up very, very early for our trip to Stonehenge. A lovely breakfast is cooked up by Veronica and served by her John, the car is packed up, and too very soon, we are leaving the wonderful hospitality of Webster’s B&B. It occurs to us that this is our last Bed and Breakfast stay: tonight we check into a real hotel to begin the transition into that you’re-not-on-holiday-anymore world. Well, let’s just put that nasty little looming thought out of our minds and head out to Stonehenge. Stonehenge is quiet , deserted, and slightly eerie in the inversion haze brought on by the current heat ... read more

Day 23 We must say good bye to The Old Farm House at Roystone Grange. The stay here has been wonderful and we will really miss this peaceful, beautiful house and the gorgeous landscape. We clean up, pack, and make our 10 AM departure goal. I try to give a pat to the three legged, one eyed cat that the owners have taken under care, but he evades me: I sense he has trust issues. Into the Blue Astra we pack ourselves and our belongings and with SAT-NAV and Atlas on the alert, we head diagonally from the Midlands to the south west corner of England and Wiltshire County. Today is our day to see Avebury and for me to give John a little surprise I have planned. Of course the drive takes longer than we ... read more

Day 22 I have not told you how much I love this Old Farmhouse at Roystone Grange. I am totally happy, secure, and safe here. I wake in the morning and think, “This is Home….” There is something about 16 inch deep rock walls, whitewash, and raw timber that makes my heart sing. It also helps that there is indoor plumbing. Actually, it really, really helps a lot even though English washers and dryers are totally substandard….sorry, but it is true. Our “Heavy Load” washer dryer combination can handle about what one person would wear in one day….So, we are planning our jaunts around loads of laundry. But today we have many travel bits and pieces to attend to. Yesterday our cell phone was blocked, so we think we need to “top up” our account, and ... read more
