Malawian food Africa
Maize is the main staple of Malawi. Made into a dish called nsima, that i'm trying to learn how to make at the moment, it’s rolled into balls by hand and dipped into a meat and vegetable relishes. It’s also made into porridge for breakfast, sweetened with sugar and milk, and the traditional bread. Maize is also used to make a drink called Thobwa, this makes it yoghurty and kind of gritty, however is improved once it’s sweetened up, it‘s thirst quenching and more refreshing than I’d have thought. Aside from maize the other staples are rice and potatoes. I’m s [View Full Entry]

Remembrance Sunday  Africa
I was offered the opportunity to take part in Malawi’s Remembrance Day memorial representing St John last Sunday. Malawi fought with the British troops in the first and second World Wars, as the Malawi Rifles, 1st battalion of the Kings African Rifles. In the First World War 200,000 members of the Nyasaland (the British protectorate renamed Malawi) population served, out of a total population of 1.1 million. During the Second World War almost 30,000 Malawians served in the armed forces. The memorial I attended was one of 3 St John members were present at in Lilongwe, Mzuzu and (where I [View Full Entry]

Transport Africa » Malawi » Southern » Blantyre
I think I’m reaching a point now where I can get around pretty much independently, which is good lets me get out and not stay cooped up in the office or at home. At work I often go out with Fred during the day, to visit the businesses or schools we’re working with. We travel in the minibuses (also how I get around on my own) that provide good coverage for most places (all round Blantyre, but also to Zomba, Mangoshi and the Mozambique border), these are tiny little Toyota HiAces, 11 seater cabs, sitting 3 or 4 abreast, of somewhat [View Full Entry]

St John Malawi Africa
I’m in the St John office, just off Churchill road in Limbe (originally a separate town, but got swallowed up as Blantyre expanded). In the main room, there are 5 desks around the room, a large meeting table in the centre. There’s first aid equipment stacked at the far side of the room, along with a blackboard with the upcoming training events and duties. There is the state photo of the President, Dr. Bingu, above the blackboard and a photo of St John gate in London on the opposite wall. In addition to the various first aid and anatomical posters dotting [View Full Entry]

LAKE MALAWI Africa » Malawi » Lake Malawi
I’ve just returned from 4 days at Lake Malawi having been invited to go, only a few hours before we left, by Alekeni (who I work with at SJA) and 5 of her friends (Themba, Mazaza, and Josh). A 3-4 hour drive from Blantyre, the lake covers 20% of Malawi, it is a lot warmer then Blantyre (thus why I’ve managed to burn my shoulders and neck despite repeatedly applying sun cream) most days between 30-40°C. There are few mosquitoes but a fair few midges, flies and ants, which could be sorted out with insect repellent. We stayed at a lodge [View Full Entry]

Arrival in Malawi Africa » Malawi » Southern » Blantyre
I arrived in Malawi on Thursday, after only 15 or 16 hours of travelling... The flight was OK but came with the usual problems (Small seats, bad food, TV not working) but this was more than made up for in the flight from Nairobi to Lilongwe where the plane was very empty and so I was able to have 3 seats to myself, and have a proper sleep for a few hours rather than dose off wondering if I was going to fall on the guy on one side and the spectacular views of Kenya’s mountains out of the window. I [View Full Entry]
