We arrived in Lyon after dinner. We had to go through three more locks. (I said in my earlier blog that there were 9 locks to pass but I was wrong, there are a total of 14!). Dinner was delicious. We had a choice of pate or salad with frommage. Michael had both! The soup was cream of vegetable and for our entrees we had a choice of chicken in a mushroom cream sauce or salmon with pesto. For dessert Michael had caramel creme brulee. I tried the meringue cookie with ice cream and berries. It was so good! It was the "traveling light" menu option which has been an option at every dinner, although for some reason I keep disregarding! When we leave the ship they have promised they will print us out menus of ... read more

Today is Thursday and the only reason I know that is from the daily program! I continue to try the daily breakfast special, today was crepe with berries and it was so good! Of course I also had to have croissant and today I had 2! This morning we started with an onboard private lecture from the famous chocolate house, Valrhona. We had a powerpoint presentation and learned all about how to chocolate is made. After the lecture we had a chocolate tasting and we tasted 5 different varieties of dark chocolate from different regions of the world. Valrhona has relationships with small cocoa farms throughout the world and it's amazing to taste how different the cocoa beans are. This was a great way for me to start the day! Following the tasting we walked to ... read more

Although it is Thursday after lunch I am just beginning to recount what happened on Wednesday. Our days are so full that it is hard to remember what we did yesterday so I sit here with the daily program to help me remember. We have some free time this afternoon as we travel to Lyon so I will try and catch you up. I will start with Wednesday. Our day started with the breakfast of the day, waffles with chocolate sauce. Need I say more....I couldn't have asked for a better way to wake up! Of course I had to also have a chocolate croissant! The croissants are petit which is a good thing! We spent the night anchored on the Rhone as there was not enough room at the marina Viviers for our ship. The ... read more

It was nice waking up in Avignon again. We had already spent 2 days in this town and it felt familiar. After breakfast we broke into groups and went on a walking tour. We use a "quietvox" for this. It's a small ipod like speaker with a detachable earpiece. You keep the earpiece for future use and everyday get a new "vox". The vox's have numbers and that is your group so when you walk around you have a considerable distance you can be from your guide and still hear. It's very easy to use. Today we are touring the Palais des Papes. For all of you who know I am not a history buff, I was surprised to learn that Avignon was the home to 9 popes over the years. Eventually the pope moved back ... read more

Before I tell you about our afternoon I need to mention that we had the best pancakes ever for breakfast this morning! The consistency was different than what we are used to, they were more cake-like but very light. We think they were made in individual frying pans because they had this buttery crust that was so crisp and delicious. They were such a treat! After our morning guided tour of Arles we returned to the ship for our lunch. After lunch we registered to use the bicycles from the ship. We rode our bikes from the dock, up on the pedestrian walkway along the Rhone until we ran out of road. We had to carry our bicycles down a dozen stairs to the street. We then had to navigate through the busy streets of Arles, ... read more

Today we celebrate our 30th anniversary in Avignon. I have 10 minutes to journal before we leave the ship for our morning tour of the Palais de Pape. We enjoyed our stay in Arles. We walked the the town when we arrived and returned to the ship for a jacuzzi (I wish I could call it a hot tub but the water is pool temperature so I have nicknamed it the "cold tub". However, at the end of the day it is so refreshing. The weather has reached 90 degrees every day and it's equally as humid as hot! We had a morning guided walking tour of Arles yesterday. We saw the arena, where they have bull fights and a sort of running of the bulls. There are so many old buildings and so much history ... read more

We made it! After the exhausting episode with Delta Airlines, believe it or not, we still had a one hour delay before leaving JFK. At 4 pm on Friday (we were supposed to leave Atlanta at 3 pm on Thursday) we departed and had a pleasant flight (except we had to rewatch the same movies that we watch the day before) to Paris, Charles De Gaulle. We arrived in Paris a little late, around 4:30 am to a very quiet airport. I guess this was good news for us as we were the only ones at the airport and our luggage arrived promptly. We were ready to begin our trip by about 5:15am. We found our way to the train station at the airport and had to wait until 6:10 until the ticket office opened. We ... read more

Well, to pick up where we left off....It is now 2:00 pm on Friday. We have just eaten lunch at Barducci's on vouchers compliments of Delta. We had to use both our lunch & dinner vouchers just to get lunch! To catch you up I need to return to Thursday night. We arrived at JFK anticipating a minor lay over as we switched planes. We found out, as I anticipated that one of the pilots did have a maximum shift issue & therefore our 11 pm departure was going to be postponed until 11 am on Friday. Of course this caused so many connection isses that immediately the Delta agents were surrounded & the lines for help hours deep. We waited to hear more about our future travels only to receive very little communication & eventually ... read more

North America August 21st 2009

Well, this leg of our journey has not gone well. It is 9:45 pm and we are circling the skies above JFK. We have actually spent more time making circles in the sky than been making headway to France. I mist admit to keep my sanity I am writing this entry on my blackberry (which is not supposed to be turned on)in an email format so I can cut & paste it when we land. So, let's replay what we have been through so far. We boarded our flight to Paris from Atlanta on time. We had "weight" issues & the flight crew had to confirm our take off speed. This "weight" issue took 2 hours to resolve. Finally we got clearance to take off and yes, bad weather was setting in Atlanta. We were something ... read more

We've begun our journey with well wishes this morning from Maxine. Matthew was our private chauffeur to the airport. We had Bloody Mary's in the Delta lounge as we waited to depart on our first leg of oir trip. Lunch at Atlanta Bread Company and some more waiting at the Delta lounge. We have about an hour before we board our 767 to Paris. Next entry from somewhere in France!... read more
