We arrived in Lyon after dinner. We had to go through three more locks. (I said in my earlier blog that there were 9 locks to pass but I was wrong, there are a total of 14!). Dinner was delicious. We had a choice of pate or salad with frommage. Michael had both! The soup was cream of vegetable and for our entrees we had a choice of chicken in a mushroom cream sauce or salmon with pesto. For dessert Michael had caramel creme brulee. I tried the meringue cookie with ice cream and berries. It was so good! It was the "traveling light" menu option which has been an option at every dinner, although for some reason I keep disregarding! When we leave the ship they have promised they will print us out menus of all of our meals. It's so hard to remember course to course and the french names of our food.
The boat has docked along the Rhone at the Universite Limiere Lyon II. There is a large promenade and it was full of students hanging around tables and benches drinking Heineken. There are bocci courts and we watched 4 or 5 games as we walked towards
Vieux Lyon. We took the Pont de l' Universite and walked through the beautiful historic building of Old Lyon. Vieux Lyon is a peninsula between the Rhone and the Saone. I was amazed at how many people were outside last night. They have bicycle stands where you can rent a bike at one location and drop it off when you are finished. What a great concept for this large city! The bistros were open and full of people. The squares were filled. We found a pedestrian walkway with a movie theater and shops galore and made our way to Place Bellecour. This is an exclusive area and we passed designer shop after designer shop and even haute couture shops. I can't imagine it during the day as it was so busy at 10 pm. We walked back across the Pont de la Guillotiere, through Place Anonin Jutard where we watched the people hanging out in groups along the steps or benches. They have a place where you could ride your bike and do tricks, not like a velodome but we watched 3 guys riding down into the pit and then ride out and twist and do their tricks. The pit
was painted so it was art like. There was a big pit and a small pit and people nearby. We just sat on the steps to observe. Directly across the Quai Claude-Bernard (a major street) was an outdoor movie theater. We watched the big screen and people in chairs and the grass watching the movie. As we walked back towards our ship we sat down to watch a game of bocci. Michael understands the rules better than me but we didn't get to see much of the game.....it was over and there was a new group waiting to use the court.
The weather continues to be beautiful....sunny and comfortable (maybe a bit warm). Off to breakfast (I heard there is French toast!) and then our tour of Lyon.
