June 30th 2011

June 20th- 28th I honestly can't believe how fast this year has gone by. I feel like I just arrived in Spain and yet I am already home. Where did all my time go? I am not exactly sure how I feel about returning. On one hand I am so excited to see everyone again and yet this program and the lifestyle I have found in Spain is very appealing. So I definitely tried to take advantage of Madrid in my last week. Monday and Tuesday were really my last day of work and tutoring. It was sad to say goodbye to my students from my private lessons. Some of the families and I really bonded over the year and I will miss them. Tuesday after school I got to meet Laura’s brother and Sandy's parents. ... read more

My last two weeks of travels I decided to take pretty easy and spend most of my time on the beach Week 36 (June 6-12) started off pretty low key. Monday I had just gotten back from morocco so Tuesday was my first day back to work. It was also the last day of preparations before the 4th grade English test so I helped out in their class all day rather than attend my normal classes. In the one day I worked with them I think some will do okay, but I don't think they will do as well as 2nd graders did. After school I had a few private lessons (now that it is June my lessons are bring canceled more often), and overall they went pretty well. Wednesday, once again, I was with the ... read more

So week 34 (May 23-28) was a very relaxed week. I unfortunately got sick but luckily for me it was when I was spending the week in Madrid. Monday passed as any normal day with the constant preparation for trinity, but Tuesday was vastly different. Tuesday was the 2nd graders English exam (finally!). I spent all day walking the students to and from the class and exam room. Some of them were so nervous and crying while others were perfectly fine. I had the job of trying to calm them down and ease their worries. After school I headed to tutoring per usual but when I got home I had a great surprise. My director called to tell me the results of the English exam. The examiner explained that are school was so prepared and she ... read more

May 22nd 2011

May 16th - 22nd So this week started out as normal as any other but come Sunday I had definitely changed as a person. Friday I woke up bright and early and caught my flight to Berlin Germany. I have been to a few different German airports but never in the actually cities so I was really looking forward to this trip. Upon arriving in Berlin I caught the 20 minute train ride to the city center and headed straight to my hostel. After getting all checked in and settled I headed out into the city. The first place I went towards was Museum Island which houses numerous museums and the Berlin Dome. The Berlin Dome is a cathedral, and it was unbelievable. I was extremely impressed with the contrasting colors on the exterior architecture and ... read more

May 9th - 15th Monday of this week I decided to plan a spur of the moment trip with Sandy to Sevilla. It turned out to be amazing! Thursday night, after tutoring, Sandy and I met at the bus station and climbed on board. We got all settled in for the long 9 hour trip. We slept most of the way, until we had to change busses in Granada. Our second bus was very empty so we sprawled out and watched the scenery pass until we arrived in Sevilla. We arrived right before we could check into our hostel so we headed to a plaza and got some bocadillas to eat while we waited. Finally it was time to check in. Our hostel turned out to be really nice, an old Moorish palace, which had been ... read more

Finally caught up on the blogs...so this is for last week… This week started off pretty bad but turned out to be amazing! I had spent the entire weekend in bed trying to recover from being sick. I had high hopes that this would make me feel better sooner. I had a trip planned for the weekend and I didn’t want to cancel it. Tuesday I headed to work and tutoring as usual. Surprisingly, the day wasn´t as bad as I was expecting. I was able to push through, and make it through the entire day without feeling too bad. However I probably should have canceled some of my tutoring because Wednesday I couldn´t seem to function at all. I ended up having to call in sick to work because I was so congested, I couldn´t ... read more

April 24th – April 30th So this week was my first week back to work. I began to fall back into the routine of work, had a few dinners with friends, and unfortunately started to get sick. Sunday my roommates and I made a big dinner to celebrate Easter and watched a ton of the parades that were occurring in Madrid on the television (it was raining). My normal Easter consists of a big meal with the family and Easter egg hunting in grandma´s yard. It was really interesting to see the contrast to what I normally experience for Easter. In Madrid numerous cathedrals hold a large parade in which they have groups of people carry massive crosses down the street. It was a very intense reminder of Christ suffering on the cross. Monday I spent ... read more

April 17th – April 23rd Semana Santa was so relaxing and much needed. Sunday I slept in nice and late and did my normal work out. Afterwards I headed to the park to read a book and lay in the sun. From there I headed to Sol to meet up with Sandy. Over Semana Santa Sandy was taking a Spanish class so we headed to the yogurt place, picked up some food and then went to the plaza to work on her homework. We finished up fairly quick so we walked around the city until her boyfriend Sam finished up at work. He is a chef, so we headed to his restaurant and he gave us a quick tour before joining us for a jug of amazing Sangria. Afterwards I headed home and got to chat ... read more

May 1st 2011

April 3rd – April 16th I did not go on any trips during this two week span, but I still was able to have a really good time spending it with friends, relaxing in the glorious sun and exploring more of the city. As far as work goes the weeks could not have been finished quickly enough. Everyone at school was more than ready for a break and it definitely showed. Our first trimester we hardly worked at all and had tons of holidays, however this semester, we had a very long 4 months with no real breaks. The staff did not want to be there and more and a few were rushing to get their grades turned in. Unfortunately that meant some of the auxiliares had to pick up the slack. I think the worst ... read more

April 30th 2011

March 27th – April 2nd Well the week and weekend passed very normally and relaxed but Wednesday I got to do something new and quite entertaining with the 5th and 6th grade classes. Rather than spend a day at school I headed to the 5th grade classroom where we grabbed our stuff and loaded up on a bus, heading into the mountains with a few guides. The trip started off fine, with the kids having tons of fun. Unfortunately the road was very curvy (kind of like hwy 34) so in no time at all we had kids throwing up. None of the other teachers could handle the curves so I had to deal with it. I felt so bad for the students. They sick kids were miserable and those around them as well. Being stuck ... read more
