Well we set off for the final leg of the journey down to Sydney, it was a bit far for one days drive so we stopped off at a tiny place called Harrington overnight. Upon arriving we thought we had driven into the film set from The Truman Show! There is a very new development of picture perfect identical houses and a little set of shops but no people!! It was very errie! The next day we arrived in Sydney in the afternoon and settled into our campsite some 26km from the city centre! This was most unusual for us to be so far from the action but this is the first place where everything is not setup for the campervan/caravan brigade! The journey into the centre of Sydney involved a short drive to a ferry ... read more

WOW, we are shell shocked!!! After 6 weeks in the Outback and North Queensland coastal towns we arrive in the big smog of Brisbane. It is really very strange to suddenly be surrounded by huge buildings and over a million people. We had 2 days to explore Brisbane and so after catching up on some odd jobs (doing laundry and blogs takes up so much time!) we set out to do a bit of a walking tour of Brisbane. We began at the City Hall and the rather impressive clock tower, after a short ride in the first ever Brisbane lift and some interesting facts from the lift driver(?) we moved on through some nice gardens and a War memorial ending up at the oldest Church in Brisbane and the Cathedral next door. It is worth ... read more

Well our next stretch of the East Coast was to take us to Noosa via Rainbow Beach and then on for a day of 'Crikeys' at the late Mr Irwins Australia Zoo. The brief stop and walk along Rainbow beach was well worth the little detour due to the beautiful beach and the multi coloured cliffs that give the beach its name. It also has a huge sand dune called Carlos Sandblow overlooking the beach which is quite a sight. After this it was on down to Noosa for a nightly stopover. Noosa is a very attractive little place that is built around the many waterways leading out into the sea. It has become a bit of a playground for Australias wealthy and has been touted as the Australian 'Nice'. The beach was very pretty but ... read more

After the disappointment of Airlie beach we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived in Hervey Bay. The long stretch of beach was idyllic with a few people scattered about. We strolled along the beach then came back via the little shore front shops, dipping in and out to look at souvenirs. We had booked a day at Fraser Island for our first day and a day at sea whale watching for the next day. We hopped on the ferry at 8.30 to cross the Sandy Strait to Fraser which is a gigantic sand bar measuring 120km by 15km. As we approached it looked just too lush and green to be the world’s largest sand island! We climbed into our 4WD coach for a days island tour, we had tried to get on a smaller 4WD trip ... read more

Well our next stop on our campervan expedition was Airlie Beach, the self proclaimed 'Gateway to the Whitsundays'. Upon our arrival we though that we had perhaps taken the wrong turning as we seemed to have arrived in Magaluf! Airlie Beach is the complete opposite of anything we have so far come across in Australia, it seems to be a stag do/booze den. Having become accustomed to having huge stretches of beach almost to ourselves this was quite a shock! We decided to book ourselves on a day trip out to the Whitsundays as we don't have the time or the money to hire ourselves a boat for a week which would no doubt be the best way to see the Islands. Having booked a trip that took in 2 Islands we rose early to get ... read more

Well we left Mission Beach a bit sad as it was a lovely place and we were just getting used to relaxing and sitting still!! Next stop Townsville and the nearby Magnetic Island. Townsville itself doesn't have a lot to it apart from the Reef HQ and a nice sea frontage. The Reef HQ was very interesting and it gave us chance to learn a little bit more about the reef and how it is affected by so many things. They even gave a very informative talk done by a diver inside the tank with the Sharks!! We were lucky to visit on a Saturday when they feed the predator tank! Watching Reef sharks, Giant Trevally, Rays, a Tawny Nurse Shark and even a turtle tucking into there food still wasn't enough to put us off ... read more

Well on we plough on our campervan adventures and our next destination was Mission Beach, a quite beautiful 14km stretch of coast that is almost all Beach!! We were staying in a Van park only 100m from the beach so spent 2 days just ambling across to the beach sunning ourselves, having a swim in the sea (no stingers have arrived yet!!), wandering back to the van for lunch and then back to the beach for the afternoon. It was really nice to have a couple of days of doing nothing after all the miles we have racked up over the last 5weeks. We couldn't sit still for too long however and we were soon getting up at 6.30am to head out on a days sea kayaking. We were to cross the 4.5km stretch of sea ... read more
