Fes to Casablanca We woke late after a good night’s sleep, excluding the call for prayers which seems to happen every hour after 4am. The sun is rising rather late although it is the middle of winter. We have dramatically underestimated the amount of clothing needed for this trip, some judicious shopping will be necessary – 6 degrees in Fes this morning maximum 10. Our hotel, The Moroccan House, very comfortable at $95. We are travelling by train to Fes today, always an adventure in itself. We catch a Petit Taxi (small taxi) to the train station, the usual crazy ride although a touch more civil than Asia. The train station is reasonably small and sedate; tickets were easily purchased for 165 dirham’s (9 to 1 conversion). The main language spoken seems to be French, which ... read more

The Flight I feel about aeroplanes the way I feel about diets. It seems to me they are wonderful things for other people to go on. (Jean Kerr) Most people do not believe they are on holidays until they reach their destination; in our case first stop Dubai but I like to think the holiday begins the moment I walk out the door. George is taking us to Sydney, left home 12.30am arrived uneventfully Sydney airport 4am. Parked, met Natarsha, checked in, passed through customs and boarded our plane. Perfectly timed. We are flying Emirates, 14hours to Dubai, arrive 1pm Dubai time. Emirates, I guess, is the best of the best. The air hostess’ are immaculately groomed, no middle aged gentleman on this flight. I feel it is necessary for them to be good looking, and ... read more

Shangri La (Zhongdian) maybe Diqing Who knows where we really are. The town’s name was changed to Shangri La in 2001 to try and tap into the tourist trade. Anyway we are a long way from anywhere on a plateau, snuggled between mountains on the border with Tibet. The Tibetan influence is very strong here though it is obvious who is in charge and it stems from Beijing. A massive amount of money is being spent. To increase the Chinese tourist trade and appease the locals. We are staying in the old town which has the echoes of culture and tradition slowly being eroded by modernization. Traditional clothed women walk the streets while sports stores selling Nike overlap. The locals know they need the money but don’t want to lose their roots. Shangri La is unsure ... read more

Tiger Leaping Gorge This is a very difficult story to tell because the characters and the backdrop are too amazing to describe. I am going to take the soft option and combine 3 days into one. Arrived Tuesday at the gorge and stayed at ‘Sean’s’ the first night. It is located 20km along. A brand new road has been constructed along the bottom for the lazy tourists to view the gorge. We book into our guesthouse and head off for a quick jaunt down to the Yangtze, it is basically straight down on a track very hard to define. We wind our way through the corn fields, terraced into the sides of the hills, ladies in broad hats and lovely smiles scattered amongst the corn. Five-hundred metres later we reach the river. I am talking altitude ... read more

Woke to a rumbling sound. The too much chilli variety. On top of that Natarsha and I have a cold. We visited the Drug Store and with much pantomime purchased some pain killers and cough serum. Reading the leaflet enclosed we discover the cough medicine’s main ingredient is snake bile. Not sure if that is what Benadryl has in it or not. Wandering out of the old town we are soon accosted by a couple of ladies in a small minivan. I decide to try the proper tourist outlet but as usual they are indifferent to our requests. The lady seems to understand our itinerary. First stop – a coat hiring place (and the obligatory canister of oxygen), I realise now the mountain must be high. We drive out of Lijiang, climbing all the time, through ... read more

Asia » China July 3rd 2011

We have our car and driver again today. We head north. It is only about 200km to Lijiang, but we are taking the old road and will take us about 8 hours. You never quite get out of the towns as the houses are all built on the sides of the roads. The traffic is horrendous; trucks, cars, buses motorbikes, push bikes, goats, buffalo, horses and people. On top of that there are several types of all those things. China reminds me of one huge ant’s nest. Everybody moves about very business- like. There seems to be little impatience, anger or emotion. Just everybody doing their job. When they construct a road, the whole length begins at once and while the road is being built, the traffic is using the new road; a bit disconcerting at ... read more

Dali is situated on Lake Erhai which is 2000 metres above sea level. Behind, the towering mountains set a magnificent backdrop with mount Cang Shan 4000 metres above sea level. We have hired a car and driver for the day, non-English speaking of course. First stop – the famous Three Pagodas which are very beautiful, but during my life I have become church and pagoded out. Next stop is the local Bai market; anything and everything can be purchased from tobacco to pigs. We find every vegetable, herb, meat, cheese, clothes, jewellery, baskets and everything else necessary for day to day life. The local people seem completely indifferent to us, friendly but not staring like every else we go. Kathy has a go at the local tobacco, which was kindly offered to her by an old ... read more

We catch a taxi to West Bus Station. We are very organised this morning as we have ‘bus station’ and ‘Can I buy four tickets to Dali’, written in Chinese by one of the hotel staff. Taxi cost 25 Yuan. Without too much hassle we purchased our ticket and found the right bus. We are feeling very proud of ourselves. Can we have a hassle free day? We have rung and booked a hotel in Dali. A car and driver will be waiting for us at the bus station. We just have to ring him and tell him where and when. It takes about half an hour to reach the outskirts of the city than we are on the freeway. Another magnificent, three lane, dual carriageway and no excessive traffic. We climb up and down red ... read more

Wake to another wet morning but as usual the rain has subsided by the time we venture out. Heading for Kunming today by plane and our taxi doesn’t arrive to 12.30. So have a nice leisurely morning to fill in. Do some washing (meaning someone else does your washing, 10 yuan per kilo). Kathy and I walk the town while Natarsha and Thomas have a sleep in. Noodle soup again for breakfast. Yum! And cheap 7 yuan per bowl. Off to the post office to mail some postcards. The staff can speak and write perfect English but need a lesson desperately in happiness. It seems all official people in China are not allowed to smile. An uneventful trip from Yangzhou to Guilin airport. We travel on deserted freeways and arrive at a plane less airport. All ... read more

Woke 6am.Kathy has organised an English speaking guide for today. Her name is Wendy. Yeah right, the Wendy Wu tour. Enough sarcasm from the ‘experienced’ travellers, because today’s touring is going to top all of the superlatives. This is the place where Bill Clinton said this is “awesome”. We catch a ‘local’ bus and travel upstream where we hire a long tail bamboo raft for 250 Yuan. I don’t know what to say. We sail down the Li River amongst the limestone outcrops, pass the farms and villages, floating on the sapphire water. It is absolute serenity. The picture on the 20 Yuan is part of this journey. Two hours later, we arrive at Hua Ling, where we disembark and adjourn for breakfast .We eat off the street Chinese style. Noodle soup, fried noodles and fried ... read more
